I would like to know what Lutherans generally believe in about Scapular medals. Do Lutherans in general believe in the scapular medal?

Don't think so...I got one of these when I was confirmed in the RCC but I quit wearing it about 6 months after I got it so I have lost all the indulgences that came with it. ;)

Actually, I don't know too much about them. Just know I had one once and it was annoying to wear...plastic coated...poked at me. Thank goodness my salvation doesn't depend on me having to wear it! :D

Peace

I think we believe there are scapular medals, but don't believe we gain anything by wearing them. ;)

I like your post, Rose! LOL! Especially the first sentence!

Here's a quote or two from Luther's Works:

This we see in the Decretal, where there is such stem adherence to this teaching that they lift their own rules above the commandments of God, where fornication, robbery, usury, and murder are far less important than the eating of meats and eggs on a fast day. We saw this in the monasteries, where pride reigns in the highest degree, where the hood, scapulars, and Other observances are defended much more quickly than the commandment of God. They pay no attention to God and His Word in setting up their own rules. In this they decree the greatest sins and merits.

LW 16:244-5

Hence cowl, tonsure, rope, and scapular are idolatry, as if we could not be saved without them.

LW 17:112

It was a serious offense, for example, merely to touch the corporal or the chalice. They made everything a mortal sin. A monk was not permitted to be seen without his scapular.

LW 23:273

There's another one in LW 34:100, but I'd have to do more reading in context...

Lutherans generally believe that they are nothing more than interesting jewelry.

V. THE SCAPULAR MEDALS

Since 1910 and the regulation of the Holy Office of 16 December of that year (Acta Apost. Sedis, III, 22 sq.) it is permitted to wear, instead of one or more of the small scapulars a single medal of metal. This medal must have on one side a representation of Jesus Christ with His Most Sacred Heart and on the other an image of the Mother of God. All persons who have been validly invested with a blessed woollen scapular may replace such by this medal. The medal must be blessed by a priest possessing the faculty to bless and invest with the scapular or scapulars which the medal is to replace. The faculties to bless these medals are subject to the same conditions and limitations as the faculties to bless and invest with the corresponding scapulars. If the medal is to be worn instead of a number of different scapulars, it must receive the blessing that would be attached to each of them, i.e. as many blessings as the number of scapulars it replaces. For each blessing a sign of the Cross suffices. This medal must also be worn constantly, either about the neck or in some other seemly manner, and with it may be attained all the indulgences and privileges of the small scapulars without exception. Only the small (not the large) scapulars may be validly replaced by such medals.

*read that* Uhhh. . .I got what it is. . .so it's like, a what. . .I'm not certain. . .yes, sound just like interesting jewelry to me.

I like wearing my Cross of Jerusalem I got when I was confirmed. I get questions about that, but it is just jewelry.
