Do you like tea? What kinds do you like? I recently had a SDA minister say tea was against the faith (:sorry: ) because of the caffine...(then he admitted he eats candy bars!)...

Tea doesn't have ANY caffeine, it has theine. No kidding, theine is different from caffeine, and theine doesn't have the same effect on the body as caffeine because your body can't metabolize it, it just passes through your system. The lift that some people feel from tea is purely psychological, unless they are drinking something like Morning Thunder by Celestial Seasonings, which is a fortified tea with caffeine added.
So, drink tea with a clean conscience, it has no "drugs" at all in it! :)

I drink all kinds of tea and honestly love it. I wonder if anyone has ever tried Manchurian Mushroom tea? It is a tea that is made by letting a large Manchurian mushroom fermate in brown sugar tea. It really tastes horrid and you can only drink 4ozs a day, but it cleans the bloodstream and has been known to cure cancer, diabetes and other ailments.

Are you sure? I have three different brands of tea at home and they all have a caffine count on the side of the box. Could you explain a little more? I know herbal tea (most of them) don't have caffine, but regular tea has Earl Grey has 40mg of caffine in each cup...green tea has about 30mg.

Okay, here is the chemistry lesson in which we learned about theine in college (I was a chemistry minor). You have two hands, a left and a right. You have two gloves for your hands, also a left and a right. But suppose you only had two right hand gloves. That would work fine for your right hand, but your left hand would be cold, because you couldn't put to into the glove.
Caffeine and theine are like the hands and your body is like the gloves. Caffeine is right-handed and theine is left-handed, they are the same chemical, just mirror opposites in structure, just like your hands. Caffeine "fits" into the cells of you body because all your body's cells are like right-handed gloves, only right-handed chemicals fit into them. So there's theine, floating around your body with nowhere to go, because they don't fit any of the cells.
So, because they are the same chemical, they both show up the same in chemical testing, because the tests aren't handed and don't separate out the right-handed chemicals from the left-handed chemicals, they just see all the chemicals the same. So your Earl Grey tea shows as having 40 mg of caffeine, but it's mostly all theine, so even though it's there, it doesn't have any effect on your body.

Questions?Sorry, but this is not true.
The left-hand, right-hand chemical phenomen you are referring to are chemicals called enantiomers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enantiomer), a subclass of stereoisomers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoisomer).
However, caffeine and theine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theine) are not enantiomers but in fact are the same molecule both in atomic makeup and stereochemistry (3 dimensional structure). In fact it is impossible to have a stereoisomer of caffeine because its molecular structure is missing something known as a stereocenter to reflect a mirror image from. Another chemical erroneously called a stereoisomer of caffeine is mateine from Yerba Mate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_Mate)tea.
Article (http://www.erowid.org/plants/yerba_mate/yerba_mate_chemistry1.shtml)
One of the errors in the literature upon which the "mateine" claims are based is the claim that it is a stereoisomer of caffeine. This stands out because, as any organic chemist can easily tell you, there is no stereoisomer (http://www.erowid.org/glossary.shtml#stereoisomer) of caffeine. The caffeine molecule lacks a stereocenter and thus there are no rotational isomers at all. This error, repeated widely, shows the people writing the texts know little about chemistry and the rest of their information about this theoretical chemical must be considered suspect.

I think your college instructor may have been confused between theine (which is caffeine in tea) with something known as theanine.
Theanine (http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2003-07-04/cols_health.html)is an amino acid very common in tea that does have both left and right stereoisomers. Theanine is a relative of glutamic acids (MSG is one glutamic acid) which usually stimulates the brain. However, Theanine has the opposite effect of of glutamic acids and actually relaxes.

Hmm, let's see, do I believe the professors I had in two years of organic chemisty and biochemistry, or believe something you found on the internet.... Don't have to think too hard about that one.
It is not necessary to have a stereocenter to have stereochemicals. In fact, any chemicals which are mirror opposites of each other have "handedness." Think about it. Your hands don't have a stereocenter, yet they have handedness. Caffience and theine are two of those non-symmetrical, handed chemicals. And strangely, studies show that almost exactly the same amount of theine is expelled in the urine as is consumed. Not so caffeine. If your above quote was true, that would not happen.

You are right lambslove, enantiomers can exist without a chiral/stereocenter. Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiral)

I'm still trying to find literature to suggest that theine and caffiene are infact enantiomers. Could you recommend some?

Cuz I tell ya... racing heart, can't sit still, definitely can't fall asleep, heart palpitations... yeah, tea definitely affects me! And it's not a psychological reaction either.
I do love herbal teas though! Chamomile is one of my favourites. I also like almost all fruit-flavoured teas. Oh, and fresh peppermint is the best!! I recently learned of chrysanthemum tea... yummy yummy!

Hi there
Thinking back to the first post where another feels that taking in the body anything that might be considered a stimulant..Is it Biblical?
We are a temple of The Holy Spirit, we also read that we are to be conformed by the renewing of our mind. We have the indwelling Holy Spirit within us as believers.
Is it important what we put into our bodies?
where do we draw the line with any additives?
how would we know what is being added to our foods? (I would need a degree for that)
How do we know what is given to the battery hen in order that it should be on our tables nice and tender?
Is being obese wrong? Is that a form of self abuse?
Is drinking alcohol wrong?
Is drinking coffee and indeed tea wrong?
Is staying up too long and not getting enough rest wrong?
We do know that what proceeds from us is important.
What about what we show others? Such as obesity, drunken behaviour, partying too hard, smoking. Someone here said Tea caused this affect on her......racing heart, can't sit still, definitely can't fall asleep, heart palpitations...
Do these get in the way of being able to be ready to share about our Great God?
Food (pardon the pun, I mean Tea) for thought ...

As an Australian i've grown up with tea being more acceptable to drink than coffee, after mowing my grandpa's lawn i'd sit down and have a cuppa tea with my granpda from a fairly early age, about 9 or something. However the amount of sugar added kinda overpowered the taste of the tea! I don't think that tea is really something we shouldn't drink, in fact i'm sure every church service i've been to has ended with an invitation to share conversation over a cuppa tea.
