Does anybody know of any odd Texas religions? I just got done chatting with a friend of mine and that guy I mentioned before that claimed to be a branch from the WELS and those other denominations to my friends is definitely NOT a Lutheran or any other of those.

He's admitted to using marijuana as a way to enhance worship. He's admitted to a psychic in his church and that the world will end in 2012. He's admitted to saying something about a statement in the koran about Jesus and (i'm tired, I can't think of the name) becoming as one.

This is not good - and he will try to target anybody! He's not above "using" a child to try to get people to see his way or meet him, either.

He says people who are not in his church are lost and told my friend that he and his child are pre-destined to join this church.

This is all a bit worrisome to me. Does anybody know anything about any starnge little cults in the Hill Country of Texas?

Aren't all churches in Texas odd? J/K :) All jokes aside, I have no idea. And being dead serious, factions of the Church Koresh belonged to still strive in scattered parts of Texas...might wanna do some research on them. It sounds very Koresh-like too...

Interesting...however as long as it stays in a form of "Lutheran" discussion on the issue (and wow, its clearly an issue), it can stay in this forum. If however, the thread begins to transform from the OP into a discussion of "odd strange beliefs or religious denoms", it'll have to move to a thread more suitable for unorthodox discussions.

/mod hat off

Seems to me this "guy" needs some serious help. His theology and spiritual outlooks are dangerous, misconstrewed and certainly not in the teachings of Christ, or even Luther for that matter.

Hey Robb,

I think that she is just keeping us up to date on this person and letting us know how her situation with him is going.

Yikes.

Texas, just like anywhere else really, has it's share of militant oddities. That seems to be more common "out west." Must be the heat, lol.

On a serious note, I'd drop all correspondence with this guy just to protect yourself. He doesn't sound like he can help your faith in any way, nor does it seem like he is willing to reject his false beliefs. There really is nothing more you can do for him, I think, other than pray. For your own safety, though, run and pray from afar.

Understood, mate...actually, I was referring to the response right after the OP, which began to imply (jokingly) about Texas.

Good to see you again, Scott

I have heard of a theory that Jesus will return in 2018 because it will be 70 years after Israel became a country again (taken from the 70 years prophesy in Daniel). Wonder if it is the same theory and a few years off.

Trying to think of something Lutheran to say to keep this thread from being removed.

So when we see the guy out in the P;aza with a sign saying that "The World will end tomorrow." we can tell him to go home because he has at least 14 good years left.

Of course, we could tell them they are all wrong and that the world really ended in 1998 - there was some theory of that too - we're just "somewhere." Hmm. . .definitely not a good Christian teaching that the world will end in any certain year. . .Jesus will come like a theif in the night.

Jesus did say there would be false teachings abounding. It's been that way ever since the times of the Old Testament. One good way to discern what's Biblical and what's not is to study what's Biblical.

An Explanation to Luther's Small Catachism (http://www.stpaulskingsville.org/catechism.htm) wouldn't hurt either. ;)

I heard recently something about the ancient Mayan calendar ending in the year 2012, which may mark the supposed "end of the world"--so maybe that's where he has gotten his belief.

That is the best way to deal with the Jehovah's witnesses. Talk about all the prophecies they have had discounted. One said the world would end in 1975.

Yes, I had somebody send me a link to "Why 2012?" I don't know if that's where they get this belief or not. He told my friend it's because of a psychic in his church. Then, he had a fit when I said he wasn't a Lutheran - yet, he's going to these youth conventions (thanks to me friend, he's not going to the one in Dallas - I have thanked him so many times for that) and he's trying to convert people to this weird religion with marijuana and psychics and free love. . .and converting? Definitely not Lutheran!
