in a wide variety of price ranges.

New York City March 11-14, 2004.

SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications] -- With the blessing of His Beatitude,
Metropolitan Herman, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, and His
Eminence, Archbishop Peter of New York and New Jersey, the wonder-working
Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God (A brief history of the icon:
http://www.oca.org/pages/orth_chri/Feasts-and-Saints/June/Jun-26.html#1)
will visit New York City March 11-14, 2004.

Clergy of the OCA's New York City Deanery will meet the icon at Holy Virgin
Protection Cathedral, 59 East Second Street (212-677-4664)
Manhattan on the afternoon of Thursday, March 11. At 7:00 p.m.
the same day a Service of Thanksgiving and the Akathist Hymn
in honor of the icon will be celebrated. The cathedral will remain open
until midnight to accommodate those wishing to pray before the icon.

From Friday, March 12 through Sunday, March 14, the icon will be available
for veneration at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral, 15 East 97 Street, Manhattan.
The historic cathedral serves as the representation church of the Patriarchate
of Moscow. Information on services at the cathedral may be obtained
by calling 212/289-1915.

The Very Rev. Sergei Garklavs, the icon's guardian, will accompany the icon
during its final visit to New York. In July, the icon will be solemnly
returned to the monastery in Tikhvin, Russia, after a 55-year sojourn in the US.

According to ancient tradition, the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God is one
of several painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist. In the fifth century the
icon was taken from Jerusalem to Constantinople, where it was enshrined in
the Church of Blachernae, which was built especially for this purpose. In
1383, seventy years before the fall of Constantinople, fishermen on Lake
Ladoga in the principality of Novgorod in northern Russia witnessed the icon
miraculously hovering over the lake's waters amidst a radiant light. Shortly
after its miraculous appearance, the icon was discovered in several
neighboring towns, including the village of Motchenitsy on the bank of the
Tikhvinka River, before it finally appeared near the town of Tikhvin. A
wooden church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God was built on
the site. In 1560, by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, a men's monastery was
established near the church. Over the centuries, the icon's fame spread far
and wide, with copies of the original adorning countless churches throughout
Russia and beyond.

During the World War II German occupation, the Nazis removed the icon from
the Tikhvin Monastery, from whence it was taken to Pskov and subsequently to
Riga, Latvia. When Riga was evacuated, Bishop John [Garklavs] of Riga, in
whose care the icon was placed, took the icon to Bavaria, where it was
venerated by Orthodox faithful who had been displaced because of the war.

While Soviet agents had spotted the icon, Bishop John was permitted to take
the icon to the US in 1949, where it was venerated for many years at the
OCA's Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chicago. After the death of Archbishop John,
Father Garklavs, his adopted son, became the icon's guardian.

Archbishop John had hoped that conditions in Russia would make it possible
for the icon to be returned to its original home in Tikhvin.

Holy Apostles (OCA) apparently hasn't published their schedule, and the Antiochian parish is only able to do some Holy Week services here because they have to share their priest with an Antiochian parish in another part of the state. Needless to say, it's very difficult to coordinate things around here. :sigh:

This week's message from Father Christopher Metropulos
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

ONE LITTLE WORD
One thing I've learned in life is that things can get complicated very fast
when it comes to communications.

The fact is it is a wonder we humans can communicate at all with all of
the potential for misunderstanding among us. Now imagine two cultures,
two languages, and two groups of people who, over the centuries have lost
the ability to speak to on another, and the potential for miscommunication
intensifies. Add to this political and historical differences and it seems
that misunderstanding is more likely than actual communication.

This is the situation around the 11th century between Roman Christianity
and the Orthodox Christian world. What resulted is a schism that has persisted
for over 1000 years. The main reasons for this schism are both political
and theological.

One of the chief theological reason for this sad state of affairs is one
little Latin word: "filioque."

It means "and the Son" and it was inserted into the main creed of the Church
in Spain in the early centuries of the Church to fight against the heresy
of Arianism.

What started out as a good intentioned attempt to protect the divinity
of Jesus boiled over into both a theological and political club that was
used against the Orthodox Church to force Her to submit to Roman authority.
The Orthodox said "no."

Well, some may say it is a silly thing to allow one little word to perpetuate
a schism that ought not to be. But wait a minute, remember what I said
earlier about miscommunication. The fact is precise definitions and careful
wording of our theological understanding is vital for a purposeful and
serious treatment of these heavenly truths. To do less is to risk mishandling
sacred truths. So, its important to be precise without attempting to say
too much. You can see where this might get a little frustrating!

However, when the Church is dealing with the foundational truths of the
Holy Trinity, then all the more care must be taken. And that is exactly
what the "filioque" controversy is all about. You see, the addition of
this Latin word in the Creed can (and I emphasize "can") lead to a misunderstanding
of the Person of the Holy Spirit, and touching something as fundamental
to our salvation as the work and Person of the Spirit merits hard work
and precise understanding.

That's where this week's CRTL comes into play. We will be hearing from
two experts; Dr. Robert Haddad, Professor Emeritus, Smith College, Massachusetts,
and Fr.Thomas FitzGerald, Th.D., Professor of Church History and Historical
Theology at Holy Cross in Brookline, Massachusetts. Both these men were
a part of the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation
which recently concluded a four year study on this important issue.

Listen and learn how one little word isn't so little.

Also join us as we hear from regular contributor, Terry Mattingly, as he
tells us about the "Mystery Worshippers." How would your church rate?

Did you get to watch the live broadcast of our Pascha Service on the web?
What, you didn't know about it? Well, visit us at www.receive.org and check
out the Divine Liturgy link on the right hand side of the site.

Lots of things happening around here. I pray your Bright Week is going
well and you are still enjoying the Paschal celebration. Remember, it lasts
40 days, so don't let anyone tell you Easter only lasts one day!

Until next week.

Yours for the spread of Orthodoxy,

Fr. Chris Metropulos

P.S. Look for an important email from me soon.

Topic : AGREED STATEMENT ON FILIOQUE - What does this mean to me?

Guest : Dr. Robert Haddad

Title : Professor Emeritus, Smith College, Massachusetts

Guest : Fr.Thomas FitzGerald, Th.D.

Title : Professor of Church History and Historical Theology

What is the Filioque and why has it played such a big part of the schism
between the Orthodox Christian faith and the Roman Catholic Church? Join
us when Dr. Haddad and Fr. FitzGerald, representatives for the Orthodox
Christian Church, discuss the on going dialogue and the steps taken to
reach the current agreement.

Tune in and find out what this means for every Orthodox Christian.

The North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation concluded
a four-year study of the Filioque on October 25, 2003 when it unanimously
adopted an agreed text on this difficult question that has divided the
two communions for many centuries. This important development took place
at the 65th meeting of the Consultation, held at St. Paul’s College in
Washington, DC, under the joint chairmanship of Metropolitan Maximos of
the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh and Archbishop Pilarczyk of
Cincinnati.

Future programs can be found at http://www.receive.org/indexnew.php?menu=1&submenu=2 on our website.

OCTOBER 6-10, 2004

SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA

COME AND TASTE THE WINE AND ENJOY THE SCENERY OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

Note: Typically the lectures are in English and Russian - the chanting for
the services is fairly split between slavonic and english - in the past they even provide transliteration of the slavonic for those who desire it.

The conference will be held from October 6-10, 2004, in Santa Rosa, CA, in the beautiful Wine Country of Northern California. The purpose of this conference is to bring together choir members and conductors to explore the wealth and beauty of The Russian Orthodox Music. Participants will gain practical and theoretical knowledge and experience through lectures, workshops and rehearsals which culminate in festive pontifical services. Further, participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, get to know like-minded people and expand their liturgical repertoire.

The cost of the conference is $395.00 US per person if paid before August 1st, 2004. From August 1, 2004 to September 15, 2004 (late registration) the cost will be $450.00 US. After September 15th, 2004, no registrations will be accepted. Space is limited.

Speaker Information

Mark Bailey is a co-founder and board member of PSALM. He serves on the faculty of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary, where he conducts weekly and teaches composition, choral leadership techniques, and voice. He is widely published on topics pertaining to Orthodox liturgical music and leads frequent seminars on Orthodox music throughout the United States. Mr. Bailey also directs the Yale Russian Chorus, the New Haven Oratorio Choir, and the Westchester Concert Singers. His former positions include music director of the Manchester Symphonic Chorale, co-founder and director of the New England Benefit Orchestra, assistant conductor for the Heidelberg Castle Opera Festival, Heidelberg, Germany, and music director of the Festival Chamber Orchestra at Yale. Additionally, Mr. Bailey is a prolific composer of instrumental and choral/vocal music. Most of his compositions are written for Orthodox liturgy, and are sung in churches throughout North America and abroad. Mr. Bailey’s music performance degrees were earned at the Eastman School of Music (1984) and the Yale School of Music/Yale Institute of Sacred Music (1989), where he also studied liturgy and Russian.

Alice Hughes is a co-founder of PSALM, Inc., where she currently serves as editor-in-chief for PSALM Notes and as treasurer. Ms. Hughes received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of the Pacific in Music Education with a choral emphasis. She is also a founder of the West Coast Liturgical Singing Seminar, which has been hosting an annual conference since 1994. She currently serves as co-director at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California, with Anne Schoepp. Ms. Hughes, with Anne Schoepp, produces and directs recordings for Seraphim Six Productions. They are currently in production on their fifth recording, which features music from the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross. Ms. Hughes has been directing choral music and teaching voice since 1981, is currently the director of choral music at Pacific Collegiate School (grades 7–12) in Santa Cruz, California, and teaches at Bethany University in Scotts Valley, California. She also works as a vocal coach and musical director for several theater companies in the Santa Cruz area. Ms. Hughes is a strong advocate for music literacy and spends much of her time developing materials and methods for increasing sight-singing and listening/intonation skills for choirs.

Archpriest Stephen Meholick was born in 1952 in Northwestern Pennsylvania. As a young boy he served as apprentice to Cantor Peter Kennis, who learned Ruthenian (Carpatho-Russian) plainchant at St. Nicholas Monastery in Mukechevo. While attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, he lived with Mitred Archpriest Vitaly Sahaidakovsky and studied podobny or special melodies as sung at the Pochaev Lavra in Volhynia. He was ordained deacon in 1975 at St. Tikhon’s and assumed the position of seminary choir director and lecturer in liturgics and Church Slavonic. He received his Master’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton. In 1979 he was ordained to the priesthood and assigned to Cumberland, Rhode Island. While serving in New England he was appointed chairman of the Diocesan Music Commission and worked with longtime “kliros-mate,” His Grace, Archbishop Job. Archpriest Stephen is presently rector of St. Nicholas Church in San Anselmo, California.

Anne Schoepp, also a co-founder and board member of PSALM, began singing in church choirs at age eight, studied piano, voice, and violin in her youth, and holds a B.A. in Music from Stanford University (1985) with an emphasis in choral conducting and composition. Ms. Schoepp taught piano and voice privately from 1985-1992, has been directing choral and instrumental music since 1984, and has organized the West Coast Liturgical Singing Seminar since its inception in 1994. She composes and arranges church music primarily for use at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California, where she is conductor together with Alice Hughes. She also directs the parish Youth Choir, teaches K–8 music at St. Lawrence Academy, where three of her five children attend, and directs the annual children’s Christmas musical. Currently Ms. Schoepp and Ms. Hughes are in production on their fifth recording for Seraphim Six Productions, featuring music for the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross.
