Report: Diet Doctor Atkins Was Obese
NEW YORK - Dr. Robert Atkins, whose popular diet stresses protein-rich meat and cheese over carbohydrates, weighed 258 pounds at his death and had a history of heart disease, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
Atkins died last April at age 72 after being injured in a fall on an icy street.
Before his death, he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a report by the city medical examiner.

Scurvy is also a problem with the Atkins' Diet. If folks are doing it, they should be taking lots of Vitamin C....

I think the Atkins Diet is dangerous. It depends on ketosis for weight loss and is way too high in fat.
Just my two cents.

Plus it is a disaster during Great Lent.

I completely agree....I got caught up in it for a couple weeks...my experience was that I began to feel sick...and I mean really sick....Severe headaches, dizziness, nauseau...my doctor said it was similar to vertigo and ordered me to stop the diet...as soon as I ate my next normal meal, I began to feel a bit better....

I think the Atkins Diet if conducted sensibly can be both effective and safe. Nevertheless, most people abuse the diet and load up on foods high in saturated fat. My friend from college tried it one year to lose weight, and I had to take him shopping. Instead of buying bags of chips, he bought bags of pork rinds, and instead of eating sandwiches he would McDonald's hamburgers without the buns. Definitely not a safe way to lose weight and a pretty surefire way to give yourself heart trouble further on down the line.

What I have found works the best is simply to apply some of it's principles modestly. If you cut the carb intake by say, a third, you really do feel less bloated and tired during the day.
Ultimately, it all comes down to just living a healthy lifestyle. There is no shortcut to good health that doesn't at some point involve just eating a balanced diet and exercising...

It seems to me if one wants to lose weight, eat less of what one eats now, and cut out stuff like beer, soda pop, and junk food like potatoe chips. At least that works for me.

The Atkins Diet does come with some pretty severe risks:

The campaign to smear Atkins is being run by PETA and has no legitimacy. He did have cardiomyopathy, resulting from a viral condition and unrelated to diet. He was in pretty good shape for his age. Also his medical records were illegally obtained. This whole attempt by PETA to discredit him, after his death when he can't speak for himself, is despicable, no matter what you may think of his diet.

Friends,
Just my 2 cents: I did phase one of atkins for 90 days. I lost 65 lbs, went from a 49 waist to a 41, bad cholesterol and blood pressure went down. I am now on Atkins for Life and since last November, when I came off phase 1, I have not put on one lb. I eat well rounded meals for the first time in my life and have energy levels I had in college. It was the ONLY diet that ever worked for me, and I give thanks every day to God and Dr. Atkins. After coming to Orthodoxy, meeting my wife, and having three children...Atkins was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Peace to all.

I'm so glad that Atkins has worked for you.
As you can see from my profile picture, I'm nowhere near any definition of "fat", but obesity runs in both sides of my family so I watch my diet to maintain a steady weight. I try to eat balanced meals (for a long time I was eating nothing but starches, starches, starches--it didn't make me gain weight but I felt horrible, once I started eating actual nutrition again I felt so much less fatigued), and I only eat junk food on occasion. My one weakness is soda. I have so many Mountain Dew/Mello Yello cans stacked up for recycling, my roommate made a crack about me making a fort out of them. :) But I try to drink things like orange juice and milk in order to offset the total lack of nutrition in this soda. So far, I'm doing very well, I'm neither gaining nor losing, which is fine because I am of average weight for my height.

I have a weakness for soda, too.
I like Coke.
When other people are having a cup of coffee in the morning, I'm drinking a big 20 oz. Coke.
Many heap big calories. Lots o' caffeine.
