I was looking at this one: Essential Talmud (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0465020631/qid=1095947889/sr=ka-2/ref=pd_ka_2/102-0691631-7828158)

Hang in there FJC, I'm sure someone will answer ya. I don't have a Talmud yet, though we have discussed getting one. I have just been enjoying the ones online. Would you like links to those?

The book you have linked above isn't a Talmud but rather a very small commentary on the Talmud. I own it and its a nice read. You might also want to check out: Everyman's Talmud

The Talmud itself is rather enormous... about the size of two sets of encyclopedias. If you don't have the money to purchase the entire volume in book form, one can always puchase a CD-Rom. There are a few available. You can often get the Talmud along with another commentary or two on the CD-Rom making it well worth the investment. Also, the CD-Rom's will have a search function which beats having to sift through pages of a book to find a particular passage.

I agree...I have the Soncino Talmud which is nice and I'm able to do searches and look up passages. Right now I wouldn't be able to afford to buy the volumes of the Talmud in book form.

Also, I have both Essential Talmud and Everyman's Talmud. I'd have to say that I prefer the latter although both are good.
