Troll? I'm offended. I'm just trying to get people to think about these serious topics. If I offended anyone I apologize.
Um.....we aren't supposed to force Christianity on anyone unless it is their desicion they really aren't saved.
Not supposed to force Christianity on anyone? But thats what we do best! We saved those souls of those poor primitive Native Americans by putting them into Missionarys where they could be educated. Don't forget the countless Africans we saved as well.
Bloody Mary taught 300 plus people prostestants what happens when you don't choose not to be saved. Lets not forget the Salem witch trials where christianity showed 20 people what happens when you work with the devil instead of denouncing him and being saved.
Of course lets not forget the people who were saved by their own will. The childrens crusade may be an example. Where a bunch of children believing god impowered them set off to take back the Holy land believing that once they reached the sea it would part for them. Their rewards were numerous. Some died of starvation others were sold into slavery. Did I mention that on the way to the holy land that soldiers of christ practiced killing Jews? Their deaths were forced that on them.
Enough Satire time to get the point. Most of you failed to pick up on the Satire last time. I've played video games and they are good. Studies show media violence does not increase real life violence. If any of you are interested read Freedmans book, "Media Violence and Its Effect on Aggression: Assessing the Scientific Evidence." :topic:
But back to christianity as an organization though. I've only scratched the surface and have many more examples.
Let talk about the Inquisition. This is where in 1231 Pope Gregory IX basically said any heretic who did not repent recieved capital punishment. Anyone who choose to repent and choose to be saved got a small punishment of life imprisonment, solitary confinement might I add so they could think about what they did. I'd also like to add that confessions we gotten through torture. A horrible horrible horrible thing. Executions were carried out by burning on a stake. If you want a painful and gruesome way to die being slowly burned as your skin peals off is the way to go. I'm disgusted at even the thought of this. But it happened. If you interested to know more you can read the book The Medieval Inquisition by Holmes and meier. Also anyone who was imprisoned or killed all of their property was taken.
In 1542 the pope formed a group of people composed of cardinals and other officials to over see the local inquisition. This groupd was called the Congregation of the Holy Office and is actually still around too day now called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Lets talk a little more about this group, because they have effected history in other negative ways. Maybe their are a few positive things they have done, but I'm really not here to talk about those. This group helped stop the advancement of knownledge. This was the same group who threatened to kill Galileo in 1633 for believing that the earth revolved around the sun. Basically, they were saying if you don't believe in my christian beliefs backed up by the bible we can kill you just like we killed all those other people. This group also had an extensive list of forbidden books. Can't have people looking up alternative idea and thinking. So they placed limitation on freedom of speech. A right that people didn't have back then.
Lets fast-forward to the 20th century as several bible sized books could be written on the evils of the christianity in the far past. Many people are thinking that all these things happened many years go and don't happen today. Lets take a look at christianity in ireland. This is where Protestant and catholics kill each other for no other reason then for each others religion. In Feb. a protestant gundowned a 5 catholics in a betting shop. Now catholics and Protestants had lived together for a while with each other without killing each other that often. What is it that these people find so objectionable that they need to kill each other over? It another long story involving their religion. I wonder if they didn't consider themselves christians if they would still murder each other?
More about the 20th century. The catholic church helps the spread of aids by encouraging people not use condoms or other forms of birth control when they have sex. They will even go as far as to say HIV can't be prevented by condoms. Don't believe me do a search on the internet for "Vatican cardinal condoms can't stop HIV."
Their more too, the catholic church encourages the hatred towards people of different sexual orientation. Or how about the cover up about priests having sex with little boys. All possible by the institution known as the christian church.
Or how about Faith healing? How well does it work? Does relying on god and refusing to heal people really save someones life. According to Geogre street journal over 200 children have died in the last 15 years, because their parents relied exclusively on faith to heal them. 200 children with disease like diabetes and dehydration that could have been treated. 200 innocent children have been killed just in the last 15 years... Slow painful deaths might I add. In 1998 78 graves of children were found in Followers of Christ Church cementary. A following investigation should that children born into this church were 4.5 times more likely to die... think about it. Many of these diseases were easily treated, but once again faith resulted in their death from hard-headed parents.
I'm sure your all thinking well none of these people were really christians, because christians don't believing in killing people? Well, I'm sure those people who died would have their own opinions on that one, but it was the interpratation of christianity that caused these peoples deaths. Do you really think all those Native Americans would have died in Missionaries if the settlers weren't Christians? Maybe, maybe not. Would have all those people been hanged at the Salem witch trials for being with devil if that town was non-religious based. Again Maybe, Maybe not. Would the people in Irlend be fighting right now. I bet you all those children would not have died if it wasn't for their faith. How many wars are created by conflict of you religion with other religions. There are approx. 56 official wars going on in the world according to the Red Cross. How many of them are religion based? Ask your self. Well, I'm done. I've said more then enough to get me banned, but its the truth. :banned: Hopefully a few of you will read this before its all deleted by the moderates. Many of you are probably angered by this post. But again its the truth your are part of an organization of murder and corruption. Not everything your religion has done is bad. There is much good such as the soup kitchen and Aid you give, but don't you think you could do that with out supporting an organization such as this. Could you Maintain you belief in God without supporting something that has evil roots and maintains those roots today. bye :Rules:

I must admit that as positive as I'd like to be, I do tend to ponder on the negative side of things for a bit... at least until God gives me a good swift kick in the butt, hehe I do know that in all the hardships in my life, especially in hindsight, I can see exactly where God took care of things. Always at the point when I would just give up and let God...

The true answer to the question depends on the last action performed on the glass of water.
If the last action performed was to pour water in, it is half full.
If the last action performed was to pour water out, it is half empty.
If no information is known, the most one could say is that it is a half-cup of water.
I am a realist.

Pessimism is necessary to see and understand the problem.
Optimism is necessary to have the motivation and hope that the problem can be solved.

I dont see the point in being pessimistic - you only bring people around you down, you never get around to solving a problem, but it causes a whole load more. Understanding the problem from an optimistic perspective, then proceeding to solve whatever difficulties you have with an optimistic attitude is definitely the best way to go!! Never mind half-full, the glass is as full as you want it to be!!!

I'm pretty much an optimist.
Although I am a bit of a worrier, I firmly believe that you can find SOMETHING good from every experience - if I didn't have that, I'd have a heck of a lot more reasons to be depressed.
I tend to look at everything BAD that's happened in my life, and worked out what I can take away from it as a 'learning experience' or what in it helped me grow.
Although I feel really bad about some things in my past, at the same time I'm grateful for some of it, cos without it, I doubt I would have been developed by God into the person I am today with the beliefs and convictions I have now, without those things.

That being said, I'd still say I lean towards optimism.

I don't mean to be a half empty guy, but its a bit of an occupational hazzard. When you deal with patients all day, you tend to be looking for things that they can hurt themselves on (now I'm my grandma---LOL.) We are always seeing a little old man/woman going to the toilet or to bed when they slip onto the floor. There are countless skintears and a billion bruises. Heaven forbid that they eat the wrong thing!!!!!

Most of the time I am an optimist, and sometimes I even count the air that is filling the rest of the glass. This, of course, can cause problems because just as air does not quench thirst, so my expectations are frequently not met.
Wow, that was deep!

Are you optimistic? Do you look at the bad side of things? Does it bother you one way or the other?
Though I am faced with looking at the bad side of things and sometimes feel depressed by certain situations, it is generally short lived for I know that God is watching over me, Christ lives within me and the Holy Spirit comforts me. No greater fortress could I have or hedge around me that can give me the power to say," I may be worried or sad this morning, but Christ is going to bring back my joy!!

Amen, HisByGrace. Good reponse. Um, I think that yeah the Bible says the world is getting worse and worse, and it is, but God is good. I put optimist, but I'm not sure. I can be both. But if we focus on God, I think we'll be more optimistic, if we focus on the world with its evils, then we will become pessimistic.

Maybe I’m one of the few folks here who are this analytical, but I come up with a different answer than everybody else on the glass full/empty question. Under normal conditions, a glass with 50% of the volume composed of water, the other 50% would be composed of air. Therefore the glass is completely full.
To preempt questions about abnormal conditions, then the rest is full of vacuum… LOL. (BTW, in the ancient past I actually heard people say “the vacuum leaked out” of faulty vacuum tubes.)

"There is water in that glass."
I'm not an optimist or a pessimist. I tend to be a "just is" person. A genuine realist maybe? Reality for reality sake without the need to attach labels?
This good/bad, full/empty, right/wrong dualistic tendency I used to have kept me chasing my tail. When things "just are" then my attachments become less important and I can remain in the reality of a situation. It's hard to do sometimes but, for example, when I used to look at something, my immediate response was ALWAYS right off a categorizing; either into the *good* pile or the *bad* pile. THEN, whichever pile I have put it in I have to find, then, the *correct* emotions to display, the *correct* way to handle it, the *correct* way to feel and if I felt *incorrectly* then horrible things may happen....etc, etc.
Ever heard the phenomena of people laughing at funerals? I was one of them. Couldn't help it. I'd excuse myself and just laugh...or cover up my face with a tissue and giggle as people tried to console me. Since I've explored and adjusted the duality -which, some say, is the human condition - I no longer laugh at funerals. I'm not quite sure but I *think* I had an odd personality disorder happening where I'd become "emotionally" opposite of what most were experiencing in any given situation though I, too, would have put something in the same good or bad category.
Getting rid of the need to categorize has released me into freedom to experience whatever emotion I genuinely may wish to express, or action I genuinely may wish to take, without the pretense of how I *should* feel or what I *should* do. Life, today, means freedom of the *it just is.*
Namaste,

In general, people are either happy most of the time or sad most of the time (optimistic or pessimistic). The concept of realist is a fair analogy but consider this...
- The glass is half full
- The glass is half empty
- I consider myself a realist..That mean's its 1/2 a glass of liquid (period) nothing added, nothing taken...
If you look at these three sentences you immediately see that the first is very positive while the second is very negative, however all three tell the truth.
The third is either an optimist or pessimistic person trying to be indifferent (realistic), however all three cases are realistic therefore anyone who says the third one needs to explore their emotions more fully and conclude which one they really are. Although it can be argued that these people are pessimistic because they do not try to be happier than the mid way point, if this makes any sense whatsoever.
To conclude, this argument states that a person can be only positive or negative for the majority of their time, that both optimism and pessimism are "realist" views because either way reality is seen and finally that the idea of "realist" is not the mid ground between optimism and pessimism.

i try to think positive- but fear usually wiggles its way into my mind.
ok, so everything isnt dealt with- i thought it was.... guess not.
i dont understand anything. My bestfriend Nathan passed away this year. even though i never met him in person he was my bestfriend. He was gay.... now everytime i see anyone homosexual it hurts....really bad. Well, my bf's roommate is a lesbian now. it kinda came out of nowhere, really. She has this girlfriend now. and when i see the 2 of them together- i just think of Nathan and how it hurts really bad that he's gone. Nathan knew everything....my fears, my problems, everything...... and hes gone.
i met him on a forum and eventually we exchanged #'s through a pm. i was supposed to one day meet him and shop all around San Francisco. He may have been across the country- but Nathan knew what to say.... no one else could understand me like Nathan could. you know what's weird? i'm like totally against the being homosexual and my bestfriend was one. i never condemned him for it, but he knew how wrong i thought it was. I could never change Nathan, and i wouldnt want to either. I loved him for who he was and thats how i am. i guess im sort of pessimistic right now. ....but i cant take this anymore, my friends are dying all the time and i feel like im in some sort of line...just waiting for me to be the next one. it scares me. i never feel safe.....unless im with my bf. then i feel safe when wraps his arms around me some nights. it doesnt matter if i stop going to camp- its not going to change the many deaths i will find out when i return. i've come to expect it year to year as horrible as it is. i get over one and another happens.... i just want it all to stop.... and i cant even tell Nathan everthing anymore.

How can we be pesemistic when we have faith in our God? Things don't always go right, I've been through plenty enough negative experiences in my life already and some times things go wrong constantly, almost on a daily basis and sure I get sad, mad, depressed, angry but I'm forever hopeful and optimistic because I know God is on my side.
