I have recently been discussing the calendar with a guy.
He says that the calendar of the Jewish people today is not the calendar of Yahweh.
He says that the history of the Jewish Calendar is divided into three periods: the Biblical, the Talmudic, and the post Talmudic. During the Biblical period the understanding of the Calendar was based entirely upon the observation of the sun and the moon. The Talmudic period rested upon observation and reckoning, and the post Talmudic period rested entirely upon reckoning. The Hebrews studied astronomy very carefully because of their intense need for accurate dates in keeping the festivals.
O.K. So I can agree that the months set out by Yahweh are reckoned by the sighting of the new moon.
But here is where I break away from agreeance with him.
This guy goes so far as to say that the first day of the 7 day cycle (week) always begins on the first of the month.
Thus, always making the (weekly) Sabbath fall of the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of the month. (And depending of the length of the month....the Sabbath on the 28th would continue up until the month ended, making that particular Sabbath and extended Sabbath of two to three days.)
My arguement, to him was, that if this was the case, then, for example, the fourteenth day of Abib (Nissan) would always fall on a "7 day cycle" Sabbath, and therefore would make it impossible to cleanse ones house of leaven...as this would be considered work.....therefore nullifying the Passover command of Yahweh as a "preparation day" for the High Holy day of "15th Abib, first day of unleavened bread".
O.K. then he said that this is not considered servile work and is totally acceptable to prepare ones house for unleavened bread on this preparation day.
My question is....
does anyone know exactly what calendar our Creator intended us to adhere to, and how does/did the 7 day cycle (week) fit into it?
Is his idea of the 7 day cycle correct or not?
With thanks in advance and shalom from
