Luther didn't break away, he was excommunicated in 1521. The official beginning of the Lutheran Church is 1530 at Augsburg, in which a public statement of faith was given by Lutherans (and there were other groups represented as well).

The main contention was that the RCC deviated from the Scriptures and the historic Church. That is why Luther never wanted to start another church, he wanted to reform from within - the RCC at that time would not tolerate questioning of any kind.

Filo is correct: Luther's intention was to reform the Catholic church and it was the Catholic pope who excommunicated him. If you haven't looked objectively at the Catholic church during the 16th century, it would be a good idea as a way understanding why Luther wanted reformation. I would recommend looking at real historical research rather than reading either the Catholic or the Lutheran version of events, because their sentiments would naturally limit objectivity. Try your local library and look up "reformation history" or "Martin Luther." That's probably the best place to start. Just make sure when you select your books that you read the bio of the author (usually found either at the beginning or at the back) to ensure that their writing is objective and doesn't have a hidden agenda. Also, the more you read about a particular subject the better because it gives you a variety of perspectives. Hope this helps. :)
