Hmm...well I never thought about this one before. Kinda fun. I agree with some of the first posters. Whatever kind of beard it was, it was the best ever! As for wether Jesus actually had a beard, or what type it was...that's not relevant to my belief in Him, or my acceptance of Him as my Saviour. YSIC...Lisa Renee

Jesus had a full beard prior to crucifixion and afterwards he is depicted with no beard.
From the icons of the Early Church this may be observed and also from early Renaissance paintings.
Jan van Eyck's "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" makes this clear (I am not sure if it is available on the net).
A beard was symbolic of sin and since Jesus carried the sins of his world to the cross he must surely have had a full beard.

Of course the real question is, assuming Jesus had a goatee, does he like those cool little black sunglasses and dayglo T-shirts to go with it?

Historians believe that Jesus had short hair. In one of pauls letters he states that it is wrong for men to wear their hair long and he would not have said that if Jesus had long hair. That is one of their resons for believing this and I think another is just the customs of that time. But hey, who knows...
I think Jesus had a full beard. I dont think he would have cared much about his physical appearance.

The Shroud Exhibit
http://www.oblatesusa.org/whatsnew/TLPE00101.html
Currently yhey have an exhibit about the Shroud of Turin. After touring the exhibit, there is a slide presentation. Ths slide presentation says that before the Shroud, Jesus was depicted as clean shaven and having shorter hair.
After the images from the Shorud were considered, artists portraying Jesus gave Him the longer hair and beard.
The exhibit is well worth seeing.

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Dear Zoomom,
You may be thinking of the words of Isaiah.
Isaiah 50:6 (NASB)
I gave My back to those who strike Me,
And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard;
I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting.
Jesus had a beard, but not long hair as it was not the tradition. He was a Nazerine (from this town) but not a Nazerite (Sect) - who did have long hair.
The scriptures also indicate that he was a very plain person - not like the artists images that we see of him today.
Isaiah 53:1-3 (NASB)
Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
[2] For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
[3] He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face,
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Bear in mind that the Soul is Eternal and once created, you are in for all eternity! With that in mind, I was alive and well when Jesus walked on the earth. He had a long straight beard, light brown or blondish in color, just like the pictures you see of Him (probably from people who were also on the earth at the same time as Jesus, 2000 years ago).
When I prayed to God for my life at a time when I was working the graveyard shift in this lifetime (because someone was going to kill me) God delivered me from my attacker and in so doing, I saw a mental image of Jesus in my mind and He had a black curly beard. So, I guess Jesus changes His appearance from time to time.
One last thing, God told me that Jesus was supposed to be Nazarite from birth. Nazarite is defined in Numbers 6:1-8 and that means no haircuts, shaving, drinking alcoholic beverages, and no going to funerals. I know because I am Nazarite. So, Jesus wasn't supposed to shave or drink though it is in The Bible that Jesus drank wine though He didn't shave.

Hmmm I really do not know. It may depend on the Jewish culture of the day. I would think a full beard since they did not put razor to face based on their law. Odd, I've never seen a painting with Jesus and a full beard though :scratch:
Somehow I do not see Jesus being concerned enough about facial hair to shave. He had more important things to think about.

I think we can all agree that Christ observed the law (as revealed in scripture, not the gnat straining hypocritical version advocated by the pharisees). That being the case, the following is compelling as it was required of all Israelites.
Leviticus 19: 27 You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.
Not only did he have a beard, it wasn't neatly trimmed either.

Priests were not to shave to the point of ‘creating’ baldness of the head or face. They were not to shave the corners called ‘boarders’ in Hebrew of their beards nor cut their bodies in mourning. YHVH gave men hair on their heads and faces for a reason and it was the ‘boarders’ of this hair line, where the growth line met the skin, that could not be trimmed so close as to destroy the outline of that boarder and have it unrecognizable. The whole head and beard were not to be cut resulting in an unnatural baldness. Doing so ‘desecrated the Name of their Elohim’. The hair always needed to be seen or recognized on the head and face of a priest. Trimming was allowed to keep the hair tidy. Cults were very big on cutting themselves and shaving their heads and beards off, but YHVH says this is not holy and profanes His Name. Today we are a royal priesthood. "Because the priest present the offerings made to YHVH by fire, the food of their God, they are to be holy."
~Personal note: I believe that an electric beard trimmer would be permissable, to keep the beard neatly trimmed, but one should not shave the "outline" or edges by the neckline or cheekbones. Although, traditionally, I've heard Hebrews of the time would only cut the end of the beard straight across when it got too long, giving the beard a squarish appearance. In contrast, Arabs were known to trim their beards in a "U" shape.

I suspect that he had bad teeth and bad breath. He lived near a Roman city with Greek culture. He might have shaved. He was probably an illiterate Galilean peasant. However, he might well have been literate. However, he might well have spoken Aramaic with a Galilean accent and Koine Greek. He might have read Hebrew.

& uh, in the scriptures, he was ordinary. his looks were average average average.. he did NOTHING to himself to stand out... John the Baptist, tho, uhm, underdressed & ate grasshoppers. now THAT is standing out..
so did he bathe? yes, i think Jesus did. did he dress daily? yes, i think he did--except for the time he was in the desert fasting...
just my penny's worth...

I would think that Jesus had a full beard, but I don't think I would compare Him to ZZTops. I think it would be short and neatly kept.

Is there biblical evidence to speculate one way or the other?
Jedi christian
13th November 2004, 01:27 AM
I have seen no biblical evidence to support or disprove Jesus having a beard. I chose not important to my life.
- He was a middle-eastern person, and a lot of them had beards, so he probably had one.
- I doubt he found time to shave while on the road all the time.
- While we're on the whole middle-east subject: I hate all these christian depictions of christ being caucasion (sp?) because he was from the middle east and they are mostly tan skined! I'm sorry, but jesus was not a white american prejudice kkk member!

I'm going to say that even though it doesn't matter, I sure think that the "sweet beard" idea posted in the first message sounds great. Not only was Jesus probably not able to shave on the road and living in a beard-oriented culture, but he was also a carpenter and Bob Vila and Norm Abram both have beards.
Beard or no beard though, I'm sure glad he came and I love him like crazy.

There's a priest at my church, Father Perri, and ever since he came to our church, I have thought he looks the way I'd picture Jesus, tall and strong, Italian looking with small facial features and loving eyes. Father Perri had a moustache and a goatee.

According to my tradition, Jesus Christ's beard was full (he did not shave) but thin, with a thin mustache. FYI.
I doubt this question is important for one's salvation, although the implications to this question are interesting and those may have an impact on one's salvation.
1) Is your Jesus a racially-bound one (ie. is He Germanic with a full, thick mustache and beard and blue eyes - think 19th century devotional art - or is He black - as in Ethiopic art)?
2) Does your Jesus follow a tradition, any tradition, and what does that say about you? Are you someone who avoids traditions yet fall into one here? Are you a Christian that belongs to a Tradition of some kind (whether Catholic, Baptist, Calvinist, Orthodox, or whatever) yet find yourself holding to another Traditions's image of Christ?
3) Should you be following a tradition or Tradition at all? ... given your beliefs, given your understanding of the Bible.
4) Should you be putting an image to Christ? ... given your beliefs, given your understanding of the Bible.

I think that by the sound of him, appearances wouldnt have been his priority, however, it makes you wonder if he shaved or kept his beard neat now and then. Doesnt seem to mention much about how he lived his personal life in the bible - just his teachings.
Nothing like: Thou shall keep your beard neat and tidy or thou shalt brush your teeth twice a day....:D

Jesus had a short beard that is one inch from the skin. The color of his beard is the color of chestnut like his hair. The beard at the chin forks, so it has two points sticking downwardly.

I read somewhere that he had a beard that split down in the bottom of his chin like a fork. I dunno if this was the tradition for Nazarines like long hair but I read somewhere (from an "eyewitness" account that may not be accurate or true) that this was the case.
He was undistinquishable from the other disciples so most likely he had a beard.

Shaving during Christ's time wasn't the most popular thing to do, unless one went to a barber or had their own barber for a servant. I don't believe Jesus would have had a servant and I don't imagine He would have gone to a barber to sit alongside nobles who discussed their nights of debauchery while getting a shave. Also, shaving would have been seen as a sign of vanity among the lesser classes.
Full beard, probably combed.

Jesus would have followed the levitical law concerning growing a beard, though we often characterize him with a well trimmed beard. In truth, it doesn't bother me one way or the other, but this does raise an interesting question about just how long it might have been.
