I had a friend that asked me why does the bible repeat itself in different books?

Entry into Jerusalem
Last Supper
Crucifixion
Empty Tomb

These topics were talked about in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I don't know how to give him a good answer, any suggestions?

Hi Altima,

The first three gospels are called the synoptics. They tell the same story but from three different perspectives and include generally the same accounts. In Greek the Gospel titles are prefaced with the word 'kata' which means "according to". So you have the Good News According to Matthew, the Good News According to Mark, etc. Each book was written in a different style and with different target audiences in mind, and so there are subtle differences. The Gospel According to John stands outside of the first three books because it contains a message that is clearly defined in the first verses, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God...". Though John is unique in his style, this gospel does contain similar accounts. We have to remember that each of the four books was actually written by the Holy Spirit (inspired = "God Breathed"), and His purpose was to give the complete story (all the relevant events of Jesus' life that He wanted us to know). He chose to do this by using four different authors, with four different backgrounds and four different perspectives of the same events which they witnessed. It is as if you and I both saw a car accident, the police would ask us both for our versions, and though they may differ slightly they would in effect be the same story. The police would use the two stories to figure out the "one" story in greater detail.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Get a "harmony of the gospels" and read it. It will show you part of the reason certain stories are repeated in all the books--that reason is that each telling of the story adds a different perspective and a little more information than any one of them does alone.

Another reason that they are repeated is that each book was written by a different person. They weren't written by committee or anything, so you are reading four people's views and memories of what happened.
