Am I the only one who hates worship services? Especially the contemporary praise music  I am soooo not into after school special rock

It always feels like it is all flash and no substance. :sigh:

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're evil or anything, I just really really don't like them.

I guess I'm just a wierdo because I like liturgy and hymns

I actually like both. My family, however, calls churches with liturgy and hyms too "traditional" and we only go to churches with more modern music.

I didn't mind the worship services too much at first, but I guess you can say they did not grow on me.

And what is with the "too traditional" reason people always give? If you ask me, quasi-70s/80s rock is pretty traditional ;)

Lotar, we are all fearfully and wonderfully made...some like the traditional service and some like contemporary worship. God made each of us along with our various tastes. When I think of praise I think of David unabashedly dancing in worship to the Lord. Now that's my kind of praise...I want to express it. Others are much more reserved and appreciate the reverence of traditional worship (whereas I don't want to worship the way Beaver Cleaver's mother did).

Today I am in a congregation of all traditional all the time...(remember I am married and my husband is the spiritual leader of our family...so if he says we will worship where we worship...that's where its gonna be)...anyway, I am as frustrated and unhappy about that as you appear to be about contemporary worship. What I have had to learn is that worship is not about me. It has been an interesting journey. My tastes haven't changed but I am finding other ways of expressing my praise.

Well, I guess even though we have opposite tastes, we understand eachother ;)

Give me liturgy or give me death!!!

Well, I'm actually not that bad, but my father-in-law is!

Luckily, my pastor, even in his contemporary services, makes sure Christ crucified comes through loud and clear, just like in the liturgical ones. And we sing great hymns. I personally love the deep, non-repeating, theological ones...

I am lucky, Sunday morning is all hymms and liturgy and Wednesday night is progressive, so I get both and I love both.

Some are I suppose, but many people are turned off by hymns. At one time, hymns were contemporary. I see no problems ajusting services to the culture of the people as long as it is true to the bible message. Paul said that he became all things to all people that he might win some, and here is talking about the differences of culture between Jews and Gentiles.

Many churches are growing becasue of the new changes, and much more importantly, many are comming to Christ, because they see that it's about a relationship with Christ, and not about litergy and commandments.

Liturgy just means the order of the worship service. I've not seen any contemporary services that did not have a presribed order. Most of the time in Baptist churches, its (roughly)

1)music
2)welcome, shake hands
3)offertory hymn or song
4)offering
5)sermon
6)Alther call
7) Public decisions, testimonies, and announcements.

My church will have both, becasue some people are like you Lotar and like liturgy and hymns and we want to lead those people to Christ too.

"Give me that old time religon, give me that old time religon give me that Old time religon, it's good enough for me."

I love the old liturgy, and the great sturdy hymns of old! They have held up the Church for five hundred years and our chants for thousands.

I'll post the older Lutheran Mass Liturgy:

Introit
Kyrie
Gloria in Excelsis
Collect
Epistle (epistle is preceded by a prophet and a psalm)
Gradual
Gospel
Sermon
Nicene
Preface
Verba
Sanctus/Benidictus qui venit
Elevation
Lord's Prayer
Pax
Agnus Dei
Communion
Final Collect
Salutation
Benedicamus
Benediction
This is a time honored Lutheran Liturgy that forms the base for all Lutheran Liturgies. (Note that hymns are not there, except the Gloria and Sanctus, they are usually placed at key parts)

Well, my next class starts in a couple weeks and it will be on Lutheran worship. I have been dreading this class...lots of reading in lots of pretty dry old books...but maybe it will help me gain an appreciation for that "olde tyme religion". I don't know...I have been heavily liturgized since birth...starting with Catholic mass in LATIN!!! :priest: It hasn't grown on me yet.

Organ music is a downer too. Give me pianos, guitars, tamborines! Ok...I am not ashamed to admit it...give me Darlene Zschech songs. "Almighty God, my re-dee-mer...." with whole church full of people clapping and singing as loud as they can praising God. Wow!!!

Ah well, time to come back to earth get ready for work.

Which books are you going to read? A lot of the old books are very good, that's why they've been kept around so long ;)
I like Luther's writing style a lot and Augustine is pretty good as well, but I haven't read a lot of other old books.

I think it's cool when churches "diversify" for the sake of the diverse tastes (and needs) of the congregation.

As a Catholic, I have attended very reverent, calm masses, Christian Rock masses, Gospel Choir masses, gregorian-style masses... I love them all. My taste in music is similar -- from pop to gregorian chant to Cajun music, to African rap! Sometimes we need to be fed in a certain way. In the times when we just don't feel receptive to our worship service, offer that up to the Lord. Sometimes it's a stubbornness in our own heart, or an unwillingness to acknowledge something God wants our attention for.

When I go to my mom's church I sit with glazed eyes and pretty much sleep with my eyes open. The hymns are fine, but I keep wanting to up the temp some.

My church is modern, with the band and Powerpoint and video and drama and dance. Plus a sermon, with many different versions of the Bible being used for the best comprehension. The point is, though, that for me I feel fed every week and come out of a service anxiously anticipating the next one. So, it works for me and that is OK.

Different strokes for different folks.

Should any kind of Church service give worth to God? Hence, they should be worship services? Of course I'm splitting hairs. :roll eyes:

I left two churches because of contemporary worship music. I think it's great to have two services so everybody's happy, but in my old church the contemporary people would come sing at the traditional service at least once a month. We have seperate services for the sole point of not hearing eachother sing! It's not like the traditional choir comes and sings "A mighty fortess is our God" in the middle of your interpretive dance.

Now I go to a church with no instruments allowed. No instruments also means no CD backup music. No CD backup music means no contemporary worship. Life is good.

Right on Lotar. I totally understand where you're coming from dude. Most American Evangelical worship services have no sense of history, no connection with the past. They act like Christianity was invented yesterday, and God is a capitalist American rocker.

I love the contemporary Christian worship music. Last Sunday we sang for 1-1/4 hours and then sat for 3/4 hour message and prayer! It was FABULOUS!

I also love the Anglican liturgy and my Massachusetts church used old and new music with the liturgy. It was fantastic!

I feel the same. Contemporary is okay once in a while, but I don't want a steady diet of it.

I go to a church where me mainly sing older hymns and have a semi-structured liturgy, but I'm pretty open to change--however, for some reason, the thought of having Powerpoint in church makes me squirm! Powerpoint reminds me too much of middle school.
