Are you inspired by Christian celebrities? Who are your heros and heroines? How have they helped you in your Christian walk?

I don't think it's right to get inspired my celebrities just because they're celebrities, but I've sort of been inspried by smaller celebrities. Not majorly though.

mostly my heroes are persons in my daily personal life - I never paid much attention to celebrities - "Christian" or "Secular" - just never was my thing. Actually I tend to discount the opinion, support or actions of celebrities - I have found they are not what they appear on the screen or in print, or they have a "motive" a great amount of the time
rather, persons in my own life live their convictions in front of their families and communities where the reality of who they are is much more readily evident and the veracity and therefore value of their support and actions is more easily validated
people like my husband and a teacher at my elementary school who teaches challenged children sacrificially

I admire those who set an example for us. Sometimes, learning something negative about a (personal) Christian hero reminds me that we are all human. I found that to be the case with Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Paul Tillich, three of my heros.

I like what "Henaynei" said above.
mostly my heroes are persons in my daily personal life...
My heroes are those in my life who have set personal examples of Christian discipleship and love, and those who have had the courage to grasp my sweaty little hand and lead me through the rough places in my Christian walk. The teachers, friends, and family members who have shown me JESUS one-on-one. They don't receive recognition or laurels in this life I suppose, but their rewards will be great in Heaven.

Same here. Of course this could be due to the fact that in Belgium there are no celebrities that are openly committed Christians. At least none that I know of.

I don't believe Gibson actually plays Christ, someone else is in that role. I understand Gibson co-produced and directed the film. In any event, the film isn't about trying to be Christ, but to show the world what Christ went through for you and ME. Every Christian who supports and sees that movie should come away with an understanding of how Christ really suffered for them, it should bring the crucifixion and Christ's suffering for ME to life, something I can sink my teeth into and relate to as opposed to reading the synopsis in the gospels time and again and be reminded each Easter season.
The movie, IMHO, is meant to glorify God and I do not find that disrespectful. Of course, I stress, this is only my humble opinion based on the reviews I've read and I have yet to see the film.

Yea a movie is gonna tell us, how the messiah suffer for us. Yea right, a movie is man's work, and the bible is GOD's work. The bible is the only way to understand Jesus christ, please rememeber that! Again the movie sucks!

Mel Gibson doesn't act in the movie. Only part in which he's in it are the hands of the man nailing Jesus Christ to the cross. While the movie is mans work, without a doubt, I do believe that Mel is trying to project to Christians and non Christians alike, what the Messiah went through in order that we may be saved. Goes a long way especially to non Christian people who usually won't crack open a Bible to read about it for themselves. Heck, even a lot of Christians won't crack open a Bible for themselves either. Society including us Christians, love entertainment, just take a look at how much money movies make. It's awesome when someone tries to make a movie that will inspire Christians to be stronger in their faith and realize the grave importance of what Jesus actually did for you and that can bring a non Christian to the realization of who Christ is. Just a little spark... you know? I doubt it was Mel's intention to have the movie replace the word of God. More to just bring our hearts closer to "home" and even closer to the word of God.
Yes, I most definitely will be watching this movie and I do thank Mel Gibson for having the strength and courage to have it made and for using his own money to make it. In todays day and age, I find that extremely commendable.

On the whole I've never been inspired by "celebrities". If it was a Christian celebrity who really demonstrated that their faith was their top priority in life above making money and dressing scantily for pop performances, it might go close. There have been a couple of Australian celebrities who have disappointed me in that they state the implications of their faith and then present themselves in the public eye doing stuff that completely contradicts their previous statements. I'm more inspired by people such as Brother Yun and Jim Elliot who devoted their lives to the Gospel regardless of any troubles they faced.

This book... "Who Is This King of Glory" by Tony Evans.. referred to Jesus Christ as the ultimate Celebrity, and I contend.
An excerpt:
But one problem with human celebrities is that their status is always temporary... But one celebrity has glory that will never dim, and His fame will never decrease. He is, in fact, the only truly worthy celebrity in the universe. As time passes, He attracts more followers and His recognition increases... This celebrity could walk on water and heal broken bodies, even though He never took a course in medicine. He could also heal broken hearts and raise the dead... Jesus Christ is the only authentic Celebrity in the universe. He never wrote a song, yet more songs have been written about Him than any person in history. He never wrote a book, yet entire chains of bookstores cannot hold the volumes written about Him. Time itself is divided into two segments by the birth of Jesus Cjrist, and there is hardly a person in the world who has not heard of Him. In fact, thousands of people risk their lives traveling to the ends of the earth to tell others about the glory of this celebrity. Without a doubt, Jesus Christ is the ultimate Celebrity...
And I agree. I didn't say human celebrity, U2K.. I said Celeb period. He's the only One who outshines them all. He's done more for man than any man can. One of the definitions for celebrity is....
3. A person of distinction or renown
And I'd say Jesus is the ultimate :)

Honestly? Yeah, but not because of fame. I left my father's house when I was eleven, and went from strict Apostolic/Pentecostal to highly secular. I went on for about three years not even recognizing God, with the exception of an occasional prayer. Then one day in a book store I saw a book by Michael W. Smith, and thought, "Hey, I knew him when I was younger!" So I bought it, and after reading it, I realized that it was time I came back to God. And even when I struggle with living in a secular world (I'm not even able to go to church at the moment), I put on a CD and it helps me to feel like I'm back in church and helps me to remember that GOd is with me.
SO yeah, I would have to say I've been inspired by a Christian celebrity, but not because of fame..... but because GOd used one to make me realize what I was missing out on.

I voted Yes, and after reading the posts, I think I interpreted the question differently than others maybe.
I voted yes, not because they inspire my walk with God, but because they open to everyone as Christians in their line of work, it inspires me to share the word with people I work with. If they can share and be famous. lil ol' me should be able to share too!
I think it sets a fine example for Christians to work in the public eye.
I am saddened by people who constantly promote unbiblical pratices and say they are Christians, that I think is what gives the others a bad name. For those who consistantly live the best Christian lifestyle they can, I'm so glad they do.

I've always admired Terry Bradshaw, Quarter back for the Pittsburgh Steelers!
First off, I must admit I'm a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, win or lose (but I prefer the wins ;))!
Secondly, there's a story I'd like to share with you about Terry and how he inspired me personally to begin reading the bible.
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and with that I inherited a fierce love of my town's football team. Growing up in the 70s with Terry leading my team to 4 Super Bowl Championships and being awarded the MVP award twice himself always made him a 'Hero' celebrity in my eyes.
I collect ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Steelers related but have a passion for all the books written on my team. One of the books I was hunting down back in 2001 was Terry's "Man of Steel" which was out of circulation and a hard find. Finally, late July that year I located a used copy of it via a web site and ordered it. Whew, finally got it I thought. I had never read any reviews on this book, all I knew was that it was Terry's first book and was written between the Steelers 3rd and 4th Super Bowls; a time when he was at the height of popularity in Pittsburgh, as well as ridicule by opponents.
Now August clicked by and I was approaching my 40th birthday in September that same year. As I thought about it, my life that is, I realized that not only have I never read the 'book of all books' ... the Bible ... but I had often scoffed at it and cut it down over the years without ever having read it.
Every year for my birthday I buy myself a birthday gift, nothing extravagant, just a little something to me from me. Well, this year I decided it was time to go out and get myself a bible of my very own for my birthday present. I drove up to a local Christian book store and picked one out and was surprised how it made me feel excited to own one. "Wow! I have my very own Bible!" I placed it sitting on the front seat beside me as I drove home and kept glancing down and looking at it along the way, delighted that I now owned a Bible. When I pulled up to my house I picked up my bible eagerly to take in the house. First, however, I stopped by my mailbox to retrieve the day's mail, and guess what was lying in my mailbox? Yep, Terry's book Man of Steel.
Uh oh ... now there was a dilemma for me. In one hand I held my new Bible, in the other hand I held Terry Bradshaw's Man of Steel; which was I going to read first? I'm ashamed to admit it my fellow Christians, but I sat down in my chair and placed my new Bible on the table beside me while I opened up Terry's book to begin reading first.
I'll admit, I felt a little guilty doing it, but I soon began to get engrossed in the book. Well, not too engrossed as I didn't get far when Terry begins referencing the Lord and being a Christian. He stated that "Christianity is the single most important thing in my life." I didn't have to go much further before he'd reference a passage from the Bible without quoting it. Well? How could I go on without reading the passage to understand exactly what Terry's point was? I glanced over on the table and now picked up my new Bible which I had put down to read later.
Hmmmm ... Terry had me picking up my new Bible and reading it as I read along in his book.
Terry's book witnessed for me very well. I can tell you that there were moments in my life when things went well and I took all the glory of the moment and hard work, yet I read Terry's take on his accomplishments and he was acknowledging his Lord Jesus Christ for all the glory and victories he was able to achieve. I began crying, because never once in my life did I give Christ that credit for my much smaller accomplishments compared to Terry's. Oh, but how God was the first one I turned to when things went wrong in my life to yell at, get angry with, and at one time in my life turn my back on abruptly.
I sat there with both books in my lap that afternoon crying, because I realized that God will reach out to us in the most unusual ways sometimes. That day, he used my love of the Pittsburgh Steelers to reach out and have me open my Bible and begin reading it in earnest. It opened my eyes as to how to give Him, my Savior and my Lord God, credit for all things achieved thorugh and in His glory.
So ... there you have it. That's how it worked for me one particular day; a celebrity's faith inspiring that of my own. Now that's not to say Terry Bradshaw is a perfect man ... but who is? Only Jesus was. Terry's been married and divorced 3 times and isn't a perfect example on every count, but none of us are. It's how they inspire us that can count. I originally stated that they can inspire with common sense. As with everything in life, we are accountable for ourselves. But there are those moments that God will use others, even celebrities, to inspire and direct us. That is what happened to me that day.
Okay, you can all carry on within the thread again! I'll shut up now!

I am inspired by many people. It doesn't mean you put them on the same level as God - as some sort of suggest. It takes nothing away from God to be inspired by people who are godly.
That said, there are several celebrtities I can think of who I admire for openly living their faith inside of an industry that is hostile to everything they live for.
Why wouldn't someone be inspired by that? Its hard to be a christian anywhere - why would you not admire, or be inspired by, anyone who is trying to be a good one?????

The Christian heros in my life are the ones who use their God-given talents in order to inspire and educate others on God's Truth. There are many Christian singers and writers who I have read, heard, and follow after, such as Billy Graham. However, I think another important topic brought up, is how are our Christian celebs living? Are they being godly and doing the work Jesus sent them out to do or are they hoarding their talents to better themselves? In a recent interview done by Newsweek on the two famous Christian authors, Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye, a question was raised about how much money they were making and what they were doing with it. And instead of really giving a decent answer, one of them said, "Do you know how much taxes I pay?" Like what kind of answer is that?? I'm not expecting anybody to be perfect, but all celebrities know they are being watched, and now that they have the press knowing their even Christians (and have more to be judged upon), they have even more to stand up for. ~Tati

Jesus didn't surround himself with the 12 desciples to have them act as bodyguards. They did act as body guards on occasion only to be rebuked by Jesus for not allowing the people to get to them. The fact that any christian thinks they need body guards disgusts me. The fact that any christian can live in a multimillion dollar house while asking for funds on television disgusts me too. In the movie Shindler's List there was a scene that has forever made an impression on me. After Shindler had done a great deal to save many jews from the consentration camps he looks at other items he owned like a nice pen or a wedding ring and says these things could have saved more lives. He then breaks down and cries because he did not use them to save lives. You see Shindler understood the value of a life over his own needless possessions howbeit too late. I believe that many that call themselves christians will also realize the worthlessness of thier possessions in relationship to reaping souls for the kingdom of God. We are to lay up for ourselves treasures in Heaven--not on earth.

Yes--I think the key word in the question was "Christian." I take this to mean those who show a love for Christ in the face of their stardom. Not all Christians know Christ. I am not inspired by all celebrities who claim to be Christians. The best example off the top of my head is when the St. Louis Rams won the Superbowl in ??2000?? ???2001??? Anyone, help with the year?
Anyways, Kurt Warner (Quarterback for the Rams), who just five years before that day was a stock clerk in a grocery store, stood at the podium holding the trophy, waiting for the cheers to subside, said first things first, he gave glory to Jesus Christ before he said anything at all about the game or the trophy. This happened during the most watched event in the U.S. I have no doubt hundreds of thousands of people were inspired.
Btw, isn't Billy Graham a celebrity?
Peace

Christian celebrities... isn't that an oxymoron? :-D But really, I admire them when they're open and actually serious about their faith... but I can't think of any off-hand... actually just Candace Cameron, I think her name is: "D.J." from Full House.

I just found out last night that Judge Reinhold is a devout Christian. Whodathunkit?
Interesting-here's an article (http://www.mcjonline.com/news/01a/20010420e.shtml) that I found. Here is his bio (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001662/bio) at the Internet Movie Database.

I think that Christian celebrities reflect the same thing that Christian media portrays... a poor attempt to emulate the world which surrounds us. The quality is almost always lacking and it ends up being a poor reflection of their faith. Aren't we to strive to be perfect like God is perfect? Christian media fails greatly at this. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

And I'd say Jesus is the ultimate :)
william tyndale!!! top fella he was....i have read several books about him and i consider him as a celebrity of great inspiration
what greater source of inspiration is jesus. jesus is a celebrity so of course i look up to him, my hero, my saviour.

I am actually inspired by celebrities that are Christians. It gives me hope that one can manage to stay close to God and succeed in life, and that those two things are not mutually exclusive.
No matter how "unrealistic" it may sound to some people, I aspire to be a success as a recording artist...maybe it will happen, maybe it won't, hopefully it will...but no matter, it inspires me to see that some people who do succed beyond most people's wildest dreams and are lured by money, fame, etc. into the world, manage to stay close to God despite that.

Some I do, some I don't. The fact that they are a celeb is not important - it's what they say and (more importantly) what they do that inspires.
You don't have to be a celeb to inspire me ;)

Many of the Christians I am inspired by are not celebrities. They are martyrs, people throughout the Bible, the unknowns throughout Biblical history that stood in the face of diversity but never received the credit as many celebrities do today. I think celebrity is far too commericial anyways, despite how entertaining I find it.

I have great respect for anyone who is genuine in their faith and has the courage to say it out loud, especially in Hollywood. If a popular actor has the courage to let those around him know he follows Christ, I am inspired that I can do the same in Mississippi, which is a MUCH more friendly environment for Christians.
Now, someone who tries to abuse or misuse the faith, that I cannot stand.

my brother met John Shiener (i think thats how you spell his name), the origanal Bo Duke from Dukes of Hazzard. he plays Jonathan Kent on smallville too (im a die hard smallville fan!). Nathan, my brother, was talking to John about God and stuff. (John is a christian by the way). John told my brother to be in prayer for the smallville cast because he believes that God is pulling on some of their hearts. i thought that was really cool!

Inspired by them? I don't think I know enough about them to be inspired by them.
I do have a lot of respect for Christians like Alice Cooper, who is able to present his faith in Christ boldly and honestly, but in a way that is very welcoming to non-Christian.
I also have a lot of respect for Tony Villanueva who walked away from the Derailers, so that he wouldn't have to leave his church to go out on tour.
Greg Martin, who's one of the most underrated guitarists out there uses his celebrity as a springboard to share his faith and he does present the Gospel very clearly on his website.
I remember when Darrel Waltrip went to Budweiser and said, "I've decided to re-commit my life to the Lord and, I'm sorry, but I don't think Jesus would want me to drive for a beer company".
When they threatened to sue him, he chose to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy out his contract, rather than to compromise his witness.
I've liked him ever since then.
I guess that inspires me.

If I knew of more celebrities that were Christian, I could say better as to whether they inspire me, or not. The few celebs that I know are Christian have inspired me at different times. But so few celebs will say whether they're Christian or not, kinda leaves me unsure of how to answer this question.
So my answer is Yes/No.

9th April 2006, 08:55 PM
I am never sure whether a celebrity is truly a Christian or just for what they can gain from saying they are.
Too often when a "Christian celebrity" falls from grace, it does great harm to others who have attached too much importance to their testimony. Unfortunately, it is human nature to do so.
I think a Christian celebrity should be very careful in all they say and do since they are under such scrutiny as are ALL of us. People tend to watch anyone who claims to be a follower of Christ so each of us can do much damage when others observe us being let than Christlike.
I admire a celebrity in the same way as I do any other person who professes their faith in Jesus Christ. I pray for them all the same that their witness and testimony will help bring others to saving faith in Christ.

I think it depends on why the Christian is a celebrity. If they are famous because of the good things they do, then people might look up to them.
But if they are celebrities for the wrong reasons, then they don't deserve to be looked up to.
Personally, I don't look to man for inspiration, but I think everyone should have a role-model/mentor.
I look up to Rebecca St James, and I think she rocks!! ;)

I agree about the plastic surgery part, unless it's reconstructive from an accident or something, of course. For the reason of vanity...UGH I hate it. It's spooky when celebs suddenly look different.
A lot of Christian celebrities seem to give themselves Christian church labels, and of course I don't know them personally, but not many of them seem very Christian in their living. But, of course maybe they're different when they're out of the spotlight, who knows?

I am very inspired by celebrities that I find out are Christians. I was "shocked" (LOL) when I found out that Alice Cooper is. All I thought was, I need to find Jesus, so I can have front row seats to Alice's shows for all eternity. Alice Cooper is the first rock artist I ever got into. His songs are very inspirational. He is not afraid of ANYTHING!
It's funny because my Dad use to call him a baby killer and freak. Well that was part of the show. But when my Dad found out he was a Christian, his attitude changed. Also cool point, my Dad and Alice have the same birthday! February 4th!
I wish more celebrities, stood up and said, this is what I am. Deal with it!

yes, i am. there have been some very special artists in my life who have spiritually helped me through things... through books, music, and lifestyle.
Point Of Grace: My FIRST Christian band, and i still remain inspired by them today. They are wonderful women who are strivng to help young girls with their GOG ministry. Also, they are with Mercy ministries too. At their concerts they always have a young girl come and tell her story of Mercy ministries and how God has changed her life.
Audio Adrenaline: Bad day? AA will change it all... lol. No, i'm acually serious. AA will certainly remind you how cool and loving God is through their hilariously funny songs! AA also inspires me because of their Hands and Feet project too.
Avalon: Another first band. They have always been a favorite and their lyrics are amazing.
Stacie Orrico: A very talented singer who manages to stay Christian in her worldly environment.
Kirsten Storms: Time and again she turned down acting roles because they were too worldly and against her morals. I'm sure she could have broken into the spotlight more if she had taken them. she is wonderful and talented. She was on the cover or .....98 or 99 Brio Magazine. I knew she was a Christian by the way she acted. She is Zenon in Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century.
....there is more, but i dont feel like typing. Martina McBride is another, and so is RANDY TRAVIS!!!!!

eh, most everyone on my list are Christian song artists....
1 actress who is not very big named.
Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell has always inspired me. I always suspected him as a Christian. Even more so when i found he declined the magazine photo.... He was always my favorite band member.

Most of the people I look up to aren't really celebrities at all. However, I do admire those Christian celebrities for the way they are able to stand steady and not deny their faith even with the pressure from the media.
Most of the people I admire are friends and family--people who have helped me through things and inderectly saved my life countless times. But I also admire Joan of Arc and Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. And, of course, Jesus! :D

The firemen who ran up the stairs of the burning World Trade Towers while everyone was running down...who gave their lives for their fellow man...they inspire me. Celebrites are just people.

I am inspired by any Christian who walks the walk and shows good fruit whether they are a celeb or not. But I do appreiciate when celebs use their fame to witness for Jesus because in this age of multi media the words can be spread to so many people at a time.

No, I'm not really inspired by Christian celebrities. I'm always amazed when I hear about someone who is a celebrity and a Christian-most recently Stephen Baldwin-and I am most thankful that they were able to come to Christ even though they were surrounded by all of the nonsense of Hollywood. So I give thanks for them and pray that their influence may help their fans...but personally, no, I'm not influenced by them.

Sadly, I find much of the modern Christian leadership rather lacking in, well, Christian leadership. Many of the big names you hear tossed around strike me as politicians trying to use religion to increase their own importance within the system.

Look the problem here is the half baked folks TBN,or CBN shows us. If these folks were where they should be they would leave their old lifes behind and come out from among them. I think its a sad day when the so called church is begging for celbs. Just so we can get a few more dollars in the offering. My most memorible moment was when Jake the Snake was on TBN telling us all how God helped him and then the next 3 months down the road he's doing evil in the backstage of the wrestling room. So,no dont let fancy folks stir you . Look to your local common man,and watch the walk and the talk and then you will see that God is God. He can change a life,no matter who but we must allow it.

Really it all depends on if
They are very sincere and seem
Geniune but like Pat Robertson I don't
Really think he is one as he doesn't act like one.
Though he claims that he is, he doesn't do Christ-like things if you know what I mean.

Not sure what you mean by celebs if you mean Kirk Cameron, no.
