Priest Maxim Obukhov (priest.maxim.obukhov@ORTHODOXY.RU) writes:
This sunday all Churches in Russia will serve panichida for killed in
Beslan (Osetia). Please pray with us.

Osetins (Alans) are the small but ancient European people
with old Christian and cultural roots who all the history lived with
Russia in good relations. Very famous Russian saint, St Alexander
Nevsky, was half Osetin. Famous Russian singer from Moscow, Bulat
Okudjava was Osetin too.
After destruction of USSR Osetins became divided people: Northern
Osetia (Russia) and Southern Osetia (Georgia) with common border.
Southern Osetia is factually indpendent from Georgia. Osetin language
belongs to European group not like other caucasians peoples.

There are 57,3% of Osetins in Norhern Osetia, 26,3% Russians, 5,1%
Ingushes, 2,2% - Armenians. The whole quantity of Osetins is 598 000.
It was reducted from a few millions because of genocide in the last
centuries.
Osetia is the only Christian island in Northern Caucasus. Now it is
much less than in the past. Many of Osetin's historical memorials are
out of their republic. So, ancient Osetin monasteries are not returned
to the Church around Osetia in islamic regions

Islamic Ingushetia pretends for some territories of Osetia. The most
of Osetins are Orthodox Christians, a few are moslems and judaists.
Orthodox faith was recieved in VI-VII century from Byzantia, but
Orthodoxy was persecuted in some periods. Before Mongolian invasion
and massacre by mongols Osetins were the biggest people in Northern
Caucasus. There exists very famous icon of Christ painted on the
mountain. it was found in 1999. The icon was painted in Byzantine
style by Osetins or greeks in IX century. Here is this antient icon
painted on the rock

founded in 1999.
After destruction of USSR there happened real war between
Ingushes and Osetins, which was stopped by Russian army.
Northern Osetia has the common border with Ingushetia (islamic
people relative to Chechens. These two nations (Osetins and Ingushes)
have ethnic conflict which are usual thing in Caucasus. Beslan town
is near the eastern border of Osetia/Ingushetia. In spite of this
border is administrative one (inside of RF), now, after the
happening, it is closed. Beslan lies on road wich connects capitals
of northen Caucasian republics in Russia.

The last act of terrorism against Osetins in Beslan is another page
of many years islamic agression against Christians in the region.

Aggression? Well, that's the last thing you'd expect from the "religion of peace."

Must be some editorial oversight.
