View Full Version : Second pass forum name poll...

This is a revision of the original forum poll, with a couple of additions and changes. I picked the top three names from the previous poll, and added a couple of new ones.

A picky reader might observe that we're not narrowing the field much. That's fine. Diversity is good, and we have time.

I really like "Whosoever Will, May Come".

Whosoever Will May Come

The scriptual basis probably is Rev 22:17. (The Spirit and the bride say, Come ...)

Also, the invocation appears in the refrain from a hymn of the same name:

"Whosoever will may come.
Whosoever will, whosoever will,
Send the proclamation over vale and hill;
'Tis a loving Father calls the wanderer home:
Whosoever will may come."

I don't know what it is. I just feel like we haven't quite got just the right name yet. Somehow I think it needs to come from

Matthew 22:36-40

I know that there are varying reasons why we consider ourselves liberal Christians, but the one thing that seems to keep coming through is our common understanding that we are called to love God and love our neighbor. I would try to come up with good names from that passage, but it's 1am here, and I'm awfully tired.

Hmm. Possibly "love of God and neighbor", which is what RLP used as a shorthand for that? Hmm.

Whosoever Will, May Come is, IMO, the best catchphrase. It is exactly what Jesus would say.

If you want to summarize the ambience of Liberal Christianity in a few words, seebs's offhand comment at the end of that post, which I bolded, are as good a way to do so as I've ever seen! :)

I think having time for people is so important, for some people our time and real attention is more important than money, and it could be quite a revolution if many Christians did this!

Not sure whether it's a specifically liberal thing, though.

I'm thinking we have pretty close to a clear preference here.

Are there any strong objections to the name being "Whosoever Will, May Come - Liberal Christianity"?

WWMC... Any problems with that?

Whenever I have seen the phrase written it does not include a comma, so I would gently argue for its exclusion.

Whosoever Will May Come - Liberal Christianity

seebs

It's grammatically appropriate, even if it's not always written that way. :)

Toney

Oscar Wilde one wrote, or said, he spent most of the day putting in a comma and the rest of the day taking it out.

I would respectfully and very gently argue this point, that only one comma between subject and verb, is inappropriate.

Y'know, I just can't get very excited about any of these. I'm not sure why. The sentiments are good, but they're just not very euphonious.

In politics, 60% of the vote represents a landslide. Why tarry? The objective, as it evolved during the discussion, was to select a name that represents the forum's character and appeal. I believe we have accomplished that. We also put forward at least one name that tickles the ear: Free Ice Cream. It melted at the first turn.

I respectfully petition that Erwin be informed that the chosen name is 'Whosover Will May Come - Liberal Christianity.'

Of all the places on CF where adherence to rules for the sake of adherence to rules ought to be verboten, this is the prime place!

The "rule" on comma usage is, "Use a comma when its presence will contribute to clarity; omit it when its absence will." The verb "will" is nearly always first scene as an auxiliary, alerting you to a future-tense construction. Its use translating volo is much less common than that auxiliary use.

Certainly a subject should rarely be separated from its predicate by a comma, unless it's necessary to function as part of a comma pair setting off a long phrase or clause: "Those who consider themselves liberal Christians, and those who agree with many if not all of the principles which liberal Christians espouse, are welcome to post here." Omitting the commas in that gives an ungainly sentence resembling a six-foot-tall 14-year-old who hasn't quite got the hang of being that long-limbed down pat yet. But the comma in "Whosoever will, may come" alerts you that the "will" means vult -- "he who chooses by an act of will" and sets off the noun clause serving as subject as a grammatical unit. In other words, it clarifies the sense, and belongs there.

Well, I'm only 5-10 but old enough to thank you for making my point: two commas between subject and predicate are acceptable; one is not. Ever. However, let's suspend the rules of grammar for sake of harmony. But let's not turn this selection process into a charade.

I am neither offended by the comma, nor by your post. I petition to inform Erwin that our democratically chosen name is, "Whosover Will, May Come - Liberal Christianity."

I don't know how many of us there are, but it doesn't seem like there are enough at this time to make your 20th vote.

Perhaps we should have a roll call?

Well, we're at 18 for WWMC, so if a couple more people who like it wander through, it'll be "good enough".

Although "Birthday Parties for Prostitutes at 3 am - Liberal Churches" has a certain charm as well.
