Your question is fine Petzie. Hug. How did you come to know the Lord?
Going to church is very important to your walk with God. It's good to get around other people who can help you learn more and help you grow and mature in the Lord. You can still be friends with unsaved people but you do need to add new friends who do know Jesus. People who are strong in their walk and will help you and not drag you down.
Churches are not made up though of perfect people. There will be times when you may get hurt and/or you may see people do things and say things that are not very godly. These are opportunities for you to grow and mature in your walk. The natural tendancy will be to let yourself become offended and then stop going but it's very important that you continue.
It's important that you read your Bible and spend time with God every day. As you do this there will be things in your life, that are not beneficial to you, that you may no longer feel comfortable doing. At the moment you feel that uncomfortable feeling stop doing whatever it is. The longer you hold off the harder it will be to stop it later.
Anyway, I don't want to overwhelm you, but I have known the Lord since I was younger than you. . .so if you want I can help a lot.
Welcome to the family sister

If I were you I would look up all the churches in your area, and then visit their denomonation's website, to get an idea of their core beliefs...choose a few you are interested in and either email a pastor and have a meeting with him/her, or just go and if you like it, ask the pastor if he/she will spend a few minutes with you. After trying a few churches you can choose the one you like best. When I met with the pastors at my church and went to their services...well when I walked in there I felt God like I had never felt Him before, and that is how I knew I was in the right place.

The best way I could suggest to finding a church is praying and asking God to direct you to the church He wants you in. If you have friends who are Christian and go to a Chrisitain church then ask if you can go with them. Also, you might check out the yellow pages in your area and look under non-denomination, or inter-denominational, or any of the main denominations.
The one's I would steer you away from, but they call themselves Christian would be Mormons, Jehovaha's Witnesses, and any of the eastern religions like Bahai, etc.
If you feel comfortable just telling us what city you live in or near, perhaps other people here on the board can refer you to a church.
Be blessed,

yeah, those can be extremely dangerous.. Look for a church that teaches the full word of God, not leaving anything to error.. This is best done by (I sound of a broken record) searching the scriptures :)
