Known:
1) the "sabbath goy" is forbidden by both Torah and Talmud (see Shulkahn Arukh)
2) one is forbidded to increase the temperature or add wood to a fire during Shabbat
3) there is a long standing principle based on Torah: "we are to live by Torah, not die by Torah" - meaning that it is allowable to transgress certain mitzvot to save a life
4) however, that is on the rare occasion
Therefore: how did/do Jews living in bitterly cold places prepare for and manage the Shabbat??
............for the purposes of this discussion lets agree to keep these mythical Jews in their homes and not in a shul or other building

Wow... all I can think of is all the cold Russian winters. Many Jews live in Russia and the bitter cold seems unbearable. I can't imagine.

Where do you think all those beautiful Jewish babies come from?
-I'm kidding of course...-
What a wonderful puzzle. A Rabbinical counter might be rooted in Mas. Berachos 53a. Hmmm, I have to admit you have stumped me. I need a little more information because I have many p'sakim floating around in my kop. Are you talking about a d'oraisa or a d'rabbanan?

I was in the middle of editing my post when you replied. You mean I got it? Whew, if that is the case, at least I know my Gemarakop hasn't completely faded away here in the Golus.

R.CohenSure, but making babies doesn't exactly keep the house warm.....:pink:
Any insight into the halakick particulars/logistics ?? Answers to this woudl be helpful in thinking through more mundane and contemporary questions.....

personally, I would think to get much fire wood ready, as a halachic ruling for the shabbat in cold times.
One would keep watch over the fire at different times of the laila as to put fire wood in the already burning fire.
Of course another would have to be heavy clothing and blankets and etc.
We are to be shomrim to observe Torah- and even while our people are asleep-we are to make sure that they are safe and sound under Torah.
This would be my personal Halacha as I currently do not have knowledge of any existing halacha conserning this.
Maybe if Yatziv was here he could give quotes from Jewish writting to answer this.
However, I believe to keep watch of the fire is the best way to walk out the faith concerning shabbat.
Baruch HaShem that there arent any Mo'edim other than Hanukhah during the winter! However I mean those Moedim that are sabbaths.
And I dont think that having relations on the sabbath is allowable- at least form what i observe so far- Or it may be that only in the Synagoga that no thinking of the such is allowable- so that is why the lower man is seperated from the Higher man.
