View Full Version : I am one.

*Grumble, grumble . . .my wife is pulling a shift at the hospital today, so I can't get across town to go to church . . . posting on CF instead.
So do I!
I also like the idea of using "1" in place of age, as Seebs and CaDan have done. Since we Liberal Chrisitians have no faith icon, I decided to walk in those richly symbolic footsteps also.
The "age is one" thing started as a quiet protest against the short-lived age rule in General Apologetics. After the rule was lifted, I went back to my real age (40) for a day or so, and then went back one. I wasn't sure why.
Now I think I know why.
Extra rambling thoughts . . .
1. Keeping our age as one can be a symbol of belonging to the koinonia, no matter what "flavor" or Christianity our belief icon shows.
2. It reminds me of the sh'ma -- "Hear O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one!"
3. It reminds me of one Body.
4. It reminds me to stand with the outsiders and the exiles--even if it is just with those barred from General Apologetics on ChristianForums.

A few thoughts, since I seem to be the guy who did this first...
When GA had a new age rule, many people set their ages to 100 in protest. However, the board has a rule against falsifying profile information to gain access to a forum.
It doesn't, and shouldn't, have a rule against putting in bogus information to lose access; after all, "no one is harmed". I chose 1 because the system wouldn't let me pick 0, and because I wanted a number that would be clearly made-up; I have no wish to deceive. I wished to protest what I believed to be an unjust thing, in a polite, non-confrontational, non-harmful way. There is a time for Rosa Parks to sit at the front of the bus, and there is a time for a blonde, blue-eyed woman to scrub the streets with the other Jews while the Nazi police look on in horror.
When people are marginalized, making the margin wider helps people understand.
Standing with the outcasts is important. Long ago, before the Great Crash, there was a brief period where people engaging in certain sins were excluded from the Christians-only forums. Only certain sins. This was manifestly unjust, and I (and others, I assume) stopped posting in the CO forums in protest.
Where there are outcasts, there should be Christians standing with them. If we remember this, there will be fewer outcasts and more Christians.
It is what Jesus would have done; we know this because He did it.

Well, I'm going to adopt the 1 thing to show that I, too am a liberal. Perhaps we can get someone to sticky the "1" thing.

You could also set your profile to display your age, but I suppose it's like alms and prayer; the only judge who matters already sees it.

Well, it was until I changed it so that it'd show up as 1, now it has nothing.

You probably need to click 'Profile Options' and select "display age" after making the proper adjustment to your birthyear.
Since I don't have anything to protest, which is possibly the strongest case for my non-Roman, non-Orthodox Catholic beliefs, I will regard the '1' symbolically. I have been using the Utretch or Old Catholic faith icon, but that is misleading and probably disrespectful to real Old Catholics like Fr Rick. So I will change my faith icon to simply 'Christian.'
For me the '1' symbolizes the monotheism in which we all believe.
Also, it symbolizes the One Covenant in which I believe. I think I will write an OP on this subject, for the church has not superceded 'Israel," despite over 1,800 years of Marcionistic influence. God is not fickle and the time has come IMO for Christians to learn some truth about their Jewish spiritual heritage and why it is so relevant.

I like the "mere Christian" icon. I wish more people used it. I don't like the divisions implied by the icons...

I'm glad you've satisfied my curiosity, but it is beginning to sound rather like the deck of cards:P - which, if you're 40, I'm sure you remember. Did it only sound corny to British ears?

Well I'll do it stand with the outcasts and to stop people from saying "Well you're only 22 what do you know?"
My answer: Not much, but I can admit that.

I like the simple christian icon as well. And thats what I have selected in my profile. I dislike the separation caused by the multitude of icons- we are all humans. So to quietly do my part not to count anyone out because of an icon next to their name, I have also selected not to display that information about myself. There are many who see a flag, age, sex, or faith representation and judge the poster on stereotypes or personal bias. To truly understand a person you must look beyond that. I hide things to help people not judge but truly love regardless.

Which is kinda difficult on an internet forum board since all we see are words strung together to express feelings and thoughts. Ive spent years posting on boards like this one. Ive concluded, after meeting some of the people who post in forum boards , that often what you "see" behind the typed words is not actually what you get in the flesh. One of my favorite lyricists song titles springs to mind "The bravery of being out of range" (Roger Waters). sorry im in one of my more cynical moods today lol:cool:

If people judge others, just because of the icons, maybe we just should get rid of them? Then we are just what we are...human beings

Oh I know that ones impressions of a poster online aren't always true to form. But I dunno. Its just how I feel. Blah

I like the "1", but then I have to deal with going back and changing it to my true age to post on adult-only forums, such as the men's room.

The reason no one hangs out with the outcasts is that it sucks pretty badly being kept out of all the cool stuff. :)
