Hello. I didnt know where to put this theard, so i put it here. I have ran into many young Christian Teens called- "Jesus Freaks". At first i didnt know why they were called "Jesus Freaks", so I looked up the word Jesus freak in the dictionary.

Dictionary.com says this: Jesus Freak- A member of a movement among young Christians adapting traditional evangelicalism to pop culture.

Of course, according to the dictionary im a "JEsus Freak", since i am a young Christian evangelizing to friends, family etc...

But I do not wear "What Would Jesus do" braclets, or label myself as a Jesus Freak. A freak is somebody who is different and abnormal, so imagine what unbeleievers think when they see some young Christian teens wearing "JEsus Freaks" T-shrits or WWJD braclets.

Dictionary.com says this: Freak-

A thing or occurrence that is markedly unusual or irregular: A freak of nature produced the midsummer snow.
An abnormally formed organism, especially a person or animal regarded as a curiosity or monstrosity.
So is the message of "Jesus Freaks" implying that those who love Jesus are unusual or irregular? The bible does say christianity is foolishness to unbelievers but why make it more foolish to them? I personally do love Jesus our great and mighty God, but im not going to label myself someone unusual or irregular. i myself am i young christian teen.

"Jesus Freak[someone unusual or irregular]"

So are christians today unusual or irregular according to Jesus freaks?

Matthew 6:2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

They probably would say they are unusual and irregular, and take pride in it, as they are not conforming to the world. Sure, they dress like other teenagers do, and listen to the same style of music, but they are not sleeping around, using drugs, etc.

I personally don't wear those bracelets. People still wear those bracelets? I thought it was a trend that died after I graduated high school. Back when it was at its peak, it had degenerated into being nothing more than a trend, and I refused to wear them. I know what they are about, and their intended purpose, but somewhere along the way their true meaning was lost and it became nothing more than a fashion trend.

And since I do not like DC Talk very much, I don't call myself a Jesus Freak. I know it is their song, and I have it, but I prefer the heavier music of Living Sacrifice, P.O.D. and No Innocent Victim.

Yea it originated from the DCTalk song, i dont really subscribe to that movement but I dont see it as a negative thing! Its more about saying

"yea i am one of those people who follows Jesus that you label a freak, and im proud of it!"

its about being different and glad of it!

I've heard of the Jesus Freak movement before too but I've never been a part of it. It seems like a positive thing though.

I always thought Jesus Freak was the current word for Christian, silly me.

I think its cool because in the Detroit Michigan area, the word freak means something totally different!! It has a very sexual meaning that is glorified in alot of music. I kind of like the concept of the Jesus Freaks.

"Jesus Freak" is a term originating in the Sixties. Hippies didn't call themselves hippies; they called themselves freaks. When the revival now now known as the "Jesus Movement" swept through freak culture in the Sixties and early Seventies, those converted, such as myself, were then known as "Jesus Freaks".

It would be surprising indeed if younger people didn't know a few of us quite well, or have been influenced by us indirectly, especially the members of such bands as D.C. Talk, who are quite likely to have met and been influenced by such Jesus Freak musicians as Larry Norman and the surviving JF members of the band, Petra. I believe that Larry Norman was the first to obtain a recording contract, and that Petra was the first hard rock Christian band to obtain one.

It originated in the 1960's, not from a dc talk song. There have been Jesus Freaks around since then....

let me rephrase, the current usage of the term 'Jesus Freak/Freaks' originated from the DcTalk song, or at least over here in Britain it did.

Hmmm... Basically, Christians are considered weird, because we are NOT of this world anymore. We're "aliens". The things we do, and the things we say and think are "different" from non-Christians.

What comes along our "weird-ness" is persecutions. We are different and abnormal ACCORDING TO THE WORLD, but not to God. Why was Jesus killed? Because He ws different, and so are we.

Those who love Jesus are unusual and irregular, in a sense that non-Christians DO NO understand the love we have for God, and this joy that just explodes in us. It's like they don't understnad why we don't worry (because God is in control), and stuff like that.

Actually, it depends on you whether or not you want to wear WWJD bracelets. I think it's personal. If one wants to wear them as a sort of reminder of "What would Jesus do IF blah blah..." then it's ok. Anyway, God looks at the heart.

God bless!

People who call themselves Jesus Freaks are people who are associated with the book Jesus Freaks which is about Christian Martyrs.

I, too [vaugely] remember the "Jesus Freak" movement of the late sixties/early seventies (being the youngest of five has its advantages.) The origin suggest one who is high on Jesus rather than drugs...giving up the Freak lifestyle as measured by drugs, free love and all the other "hippie" things.

I wouldn't mind being called strange, weird, odd or foolish by the world's standards. Indeed, I think in our current culture we should be considered weird. What we should fear is becoming indistinguishable from the rest of the world. When we receive the praise of men we should do a heart check and see if we're receiving God's praise.

In Christ,

Daniel

You're right, all or atleast some Christians are different, irregular, and strange in the eyes of the unbeliever. Do they take the time to lift their little eyes and look at the vast universe with 200 billion galaixes and think if their is a intelligent creator? Do they understand the love of our creator laying down his life, so we wont perish?
