I just have to reply. This is something that I have just recently been healed of. No, not the 'generational sin' per se but the actual teaching of 'generational sin'.

I was given a 'prophesy' that my child's severe allergies were a result of generational sin and I needed to pray, pray, pray to cleanse the blood lines. I was torn up by this. This was given to me by a person I trusted (still do to some extent). I spent so long in agony not understanding why, if my husband and I have been forgiven, why is my daughter suffering from this generational curse. By the way, this is the story in a nutshell, there is much, much more to it. Anyhow, after really struggling and beating myself up, God placed some verses in front of me. I cannot tell you the healing that took place when He did that. My guilt was gone and I was free. My daughter has always been free of this 'generational curse' and I know that the person giving me the 'prophetic' words was not getting them from the Lord. Anyhow, read Ezekiel 18. You may interpret it anyway you like but God really opened my eyes to the 'truth' behind generational curses. Read Romans. We are free from the law of "sin and death" when we walk with the Lord. Also read Exodus again (sorry, I don't have the exact verses handy), God talks of handing down curses to those who hate Him but will bless those who love Him. I am still continuing to learn and, yes, I believe in generational sin but not in the way expressed here. Things such as drinking, abuse, etc... are easily handed down generation to generation. But if you are truly walking with God, you need not fear generational curses.

I could go on and on because this is something that was a heavy weight upon my shoulders for so long. I no longer have the guilt and know that God never intended me to have that guilt. One good thing came from all of this though, my faith is much stronger now.

Test everything by the Bible and, please, I beg of you, test what your Pastor is saying. Having been there, done that, I know how misguided and hurtful these teachings can be.

I really don't believe in generational curses. I believe that if your parents have no money, you won't inherit much from them. That is about as far as I believe in financial curses. As far as tithing, the bible does say that when you give generously to the Lord you will be repaid (it might have said repaid tenfold, I'll try to find the verse). There is backing to the idea of tithing helping your financial situation, but I don't see any evidence that it can be passed down. I think the only "curses" that can be passed down can be diseases or other physical problems, only because of genetic traits. My dad has almost no hair. My grandpa had no hair. I am not "cursed" to be bald. I will be bald because I have a bald gene. My grandpa died of cancer. My grandma is having cancer treatments. My uncle had a patch of skin removed from his head because of sun cancer. I am not "cursed" with susceptibility to cancer, but I still wear sunscreen when I go out. The only things close to curses that are passed on are genetic traits. To me, what your pastor is doing reminds me alot of when the athorities in the church used to sell "get out of hell free" cards. However, I don't know him so I can't be sure of his motivations.

I personally have been blessed financially by tithing. But I tithe because I totally desire to, not because of benefits I expect to get from it.

So if the freedom that we have from the law of sin and death, and from the curse of the law, mean that we do not suffer the physical results of sin any longer.. why did paul say that people were sick and had even died simply because of taking communion with an unprepared heart?

I'm legitimately asking. I'm not particularly committed to the idea of generational curses etc, although its pretty clear God visits the sins of the fathers on the descendants etc. (at least for those who are not born again).

Part of the problem is tithing. I think the ministry is fleecing the body in order to 'build the church'. Total turn off for me. But also, is this kind of teaching bordering on heresy?

How does your pastor get paid? How about the mortgage on the buildings, if any? How about utilities, church employees, teaching materials, etc. What about your church's contributions to missions? Believe me, if some of the congregation did not tithe and more, our churches would be defunct physically. Just a thought.

Before I left he went on to say we need to start tithing to break the curses on our finances. He also stated he didn't care if some judged the motive of his heart, he just wanted to see people walk in blessings.

This reminds me of the 1500's and selling 'indulgences' for forgiveness. If your church needs money, why doesn't he just say so? If they publish their finances, the congregation should see they need to support their church. I'd want to leave the church because of instead of teaching Christian charity and community, the pastor's teaching curses and guilt. Yuck.

I listened to Larry Burkett's 'Money Matters' on Christian radio for years. He never brought up 'generational curses' as a cause for financial distress. When we're made clean in Christ, we're MADE CLEAN. There's no 'except for'.

 Greetings from a sunny South Africa

I personally have been blessed financially by tithing. But I tithe because I totally desire to, not because of benefits I expect to get from it.
I can merely say AMEN to that.

With reference to the generational curses I am of the opinion that in order to meaningful discus it, it is imperative to determine where these "curses" do come from.

Lets start in the Bible. Ex 20:5 states amongst others the following: "...... for I the Lord thy God am a jealous god, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and forth generation of them that hate me." (my underlining). Now it is common cause that this scripture forms part of the 10 commandments and these commandments were given by the Lord himself. According to this scripture, it is the Lord that institutes curses over those that hates him and not the devil as many would like to believe.

Yes, these generational curses do exist, but only for the offspring of those folk who hates the Lord but for us who loves the Lord ...... no curses. However should there be such a curse on you, it is broken the same day you accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Paul wrote in 2 Cor 5:17-19: "17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18) Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19) that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation."

I sometimes think that generational curses provides me a reason, or even worse, an excuse to sin. It provides a backdoor not to accept responsibility for my actions. A typical case of "BLAME IT ON THE BUNNY."

Paul wrote in Gal 5:19: "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;" and then list 17 various aspects including drunkeness, witchcraft, adultery and fornication. From this, it is very clear that a person guilty of these activities are acting in the flesh and not because of some generational curse. It is our choice!!!!

 Be BLESSED by the BEST and stay within the confinements of PEACE
