How many people know that the word Israel is an acronym for the four mothers and three fathers?
ישראל
Yisrael
Y (yod) - Yitzchak, Yaakov
S (Shin) - Sarah
R (Resh) - Rivkah, Rachel
A (Aleph)- Avraham
L (Lamed) - Leah

That's pretty neat! (I had to look up who Rivkah was, though--but now I know! )

JH. Interesting. It does have a meaning beyond the acronym right? I find two meanings:
1. God Prevails (from the Aramaic)
2. He shall be a prince of God.
In the test the meaning following the renaming of Yaacov: Gen 32:28b
for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
Did I just say something stupid or miss the point.
By the way, your PM box is overfull.

Charles,
You are right about the literal meaning of Israel... I just found it interesting what the rabbinical Orthodox teach about this acronym.
I emptied my PM mailbox.
