What is the OP?

Unfortunately so many people say and reference to this "OP", but I have no clue what it is. Can someone clue me in on its meaning?

OP stands for Original Post.

Often threads get way off-track, even hijacked, so when you want to refer to and or answer the Original Post. Its just shorter to say OP than typing the whole thing.

or Original PostER. the person who wrote the OP can also be called an OP. at least in my mind. :)
