View Full Version : New Moons and Sabbaths (Not What You Think :) )

Hey all, no I'm not about to debate on New Moons and Sabbaths, but rather ask for some opinions for some new software I'm writing.
Pretty soon AramaicNT.org is going to have a large overhaul, and one of the features I'm adding is a calendar system that will track lunar months. When completed, the feature list will include:
- Sunrise/Sunset times, local and Jerusalem
- New Moon times, local and Jerusalem based upon illumination index
- Holiday / event tracking, which will include month beginnings and observances based on local and Jerusalem New Moons.
- Sabbath tracking (not only telling local times for the Sabbath, but neat things like in the event that I add a store, it will be inaccessible during the Sabbath, both locally and for where the orders are being processed! :) ).
- All times and dates localized for the user.
Anything else that anyone thinks would be useful for this program?
Many of you probably remember my old program, but I've had to scrap it as the algorithms that I used to piece it together became far too complex and, when I investigated thoroughly, made mistakes. Not good! :P :)
Peace!

I think the ability to export it to a different format is a real plus. I use my Palm almost exclusively for calendar tracking, so it would be really handy to have the ability to simply import it into a format Palm can use rather than manually write in each one.
Looking forward to your site update!

What Palm formats would you like me to investigate?
I'm already looking into XML, normal HTML tables, and iCal Holiday Events (for the Mac users out there :) ).

Palm uses a dba file for importing, but even a csv would be nice. CSVs can be imported into just about anything (including Outlook).

Sounds awesome!
Hey, do you know of the feature where you can paste HTML code into your own web page and it will bring up whatever it is you are referencing? For example, I could paste a code from your site so that when my page loads it loads all of the information which is on your site.
I think that would be neat. Then, your program could SPREAD!! :D
If you have any questions about what I am talking about, just ask

Every Palm program's files end in .dba :) I was more wondering as to what Palm program so I could investigate how to replicate a file that would be readable by it :)
As for CSVs I'll look into them :)
Sounds awesome!

Well, for the new website design I'm already adding in a Message Board Code feature. With the click of a mouse, it'll translate the page you're viewing into vB code and put it into a <textarea> for cut and pasting :)
I also have a footnotes system that I'll be making a new version of for referencing things on the site itself.
As for what you're asking though, I think I'll be able to do something like that. You mean like a couple lines of HTML code one can include on -their- webpage that act sorta like how the [ bible ] tags work here?
How about candlelighting times?
We Karaites don't really do Shabbath candles, so I never really planned on having that feature in the initial release. If there are many requests for it I might add it in the future. :)
Peace!

Actually, all Palm program files have either a .prc or .pdb extension. I was speaking of the Palm Desktop, which imports a .dba file. Any datebook program can then sync with the Palm Desktop. Unfortunately, Palm Desktop cannot import other types of files (like a csv).
The Hebcal calendar has the ability to export to a .dba (http://www.hebcal.com/hebcal/). I'm not sure how they do it, but maybe you can glean some info from their source code.
Thanks for your consideration of this, Steve!

Well, this just goes to show you how long it has been since I've last updated my Trêo. :)
I'll see what I can ferret out of what they have to offer :)

Well, here's a screenshot of how it looks so far, with basic moo and sunset tracking both locally and from Jerusalem.
As you can see, there's a goof I need to fix with the day of the week tracking, but that's easy enough to do :)
