View Full Version : Is it a sin to eat at "Hooters"?

Hello. This is my first post here and I'm sorry if the topic has been discussed before. I am a recently born-again Christian and as such I'm not privy to the nuances of Scripture, but I want to make sure it is alright for me to be eating there.
Aside from the primary question of is it alright to even be eating there, should I be going without discussing it first with my girlfriend?
I thank anyone who can help me with my predicament!

I personally don't think it is wrong if you go there for the right reasons, which is to eat. If you are going there just to check out the girls or whatever, it can be sin because your primary objective to going to Hooters is for lust. Jesus did hang out with the worst of sinners, and we as followers of Him should not abstain from everything that MAY make us sin. We can sin everywhere. It's not the place that makes you the sinner, it's the sin that makes you a sinner, even in church we can sin. Going to Hooters does not make you a sinner, but lusting at the servers makes you a sinner... Just make sure you keep your mind on guard.

Lol well I think it's called hooters for a reason but a sin.. no. Why would you go there anyway? It would be wise to chat with your girlfriend 1st.

:) It depends on the intent. Are you going to look at the women?
Mat 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
If you are going for the food and the sports, that is one thing.
Going to such a place could have definite implications in most relationships. It depends on your intent (again) on going and what your relationship is with your girlfriend. If she was going to a place where scantily clad men were prevelant, would you want her to tell you or would you want her to go? As for asking, it is a matter of respect. We are to love our spouse as ourselves, and if she is a potential spouse then how would she feel about you going... With you asking the question, it seems that she would not be happy with you going. So, is a better question: should I respect my girlfriend's wishes or my own when they conflict?
Personally, I have been to Hooters (a few times in college). I would feel very uneasy going there now, both because the Holy Spirit knows me and my previous mindset; and because I am married and I would not want to make my wife feel bad for me feeling the need to go where women are dressed as Hooter's girls are.

Sin? Not if you can avoid lusting for the women there. Advisable? Why pull the pin on the grenade, and hope you can throw it in time?

servant4ever
One explanation is the fact that we are supposed to stay away from the appearance of sin. If a man went into a strip club to enjoy the music and food, but diverted his eyes from the naked women, then he would not be committing the sin of lust, but would give the appearance of sin. This would lead others to think he had sinned and would lessen his ability to witness. Hooters is a similar situation. The only difference is that the women have a slight bit more clothes on than at a strip club, but these girls have the same intent of creating lustful thoughts and feelings in men.

Then did Jesus encourage people to get drunk at the wedding in Cana when He changed water into wine? It sure looks like it... Then Jesus must have sinned... It looks like Jesus encouraged the sins of people at the parties they went to, since He went to those parties... Man, Jesus was a horrible sinner, since he went to the places "chrstians should not go to." That is legalism and legalism IS A SIN in itself.

Jesus didn't encourage people to get drunk - he honored the host by his "gift", if you will. Jesus NEVER encouraged sin. When he went to the sinners, it was to love them into turning from their sin.
I've been to Hooters (not since becoming born-again, though) and I think it's a sin to spend that kind of money and get only an OK cheesburger. My advice is to find a place with better food. Then the subject of sin is moot! :D

I don't really care for Hooters but I was with my husband a couple of times and ate there because he wanted to. I think he's been there without me also. I don't feel Iwas sinning in eating there. I didn't want a big argument with my husband. I can't speak for him as to his reasons for wanting to eat there and don't think he's been there all that often as the closest one is about 40 miles away.
I agree with some of the others. It depends on your reason for wanting to go there. If deep down, you know it's to get a thrill from ogling the girls, then it's not a good idea.

What I was trying to say is that we should not try to be "perfect" and not appear to be sinless because that is where hypocrisy comes in. If we go to Hooters because we want to eat there, and not to stare at the servers, then it is not sin. I'm sure Jesus was placed in situations where there were girls showing off their bodies to Him. People called Him a drunkard (can't think of specific reference) but He wasn't. Don't care what other people think, just care what Jesus thinks about us.

Welcome to the faith! :pink:
I have to admit, when I first saw the subject of this thread, I thought someone was trying to be funny.
The first thing I would ask is, how do YOU feel about eating at Hooters? I don't think it is a sin to eat there, but if YOU feel uncomfortable with that now that you are a Christian, then maybe you shouldn't go.
I also recall the Lord's comments about Lot when He was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. God said that Lot's soul was vexed by the things he saw and heard in that city. Sometimes, our souls can be pained by being around things that are not Godly. If such is the case, again, I would rethink going.
While there are certain things that are sins across the board, sometimes sin is not something that is black and white. For example, it is not a sin to drink alcohol, but if God has delivered you from being an alcoholic, He may tell you to never touch the stuff again. So, if you are battling with a problem of lust or fornication, then don't willingly place yourself in the midst of temptation. ;) Otherwise, people at Hooters need the Lord too, so...
And I guess I should mention that I have never been, so maybe I am not the best person to advise you here.
Again, Welcome!

I don't think it is a sin. But then again, I wouldn't intentionally put myself in a situation where I know there is the potential for sin either. I'd advise against it.

If you have a good reason for going there, then of course it is not a sin. It can certainly lead to sinful thinking, it's designed to encourage that (he who lusts after a woman in his heart has already committed adultery).
If for business purposes or whatever you have a real need to go to that particular restaurant, then by all means go. OTOH, if you're going just because you like it and there are plenty of other good choices, picking Hooter's is not the best idea.

I do not know if going there is a sin, but I do know that it does cause lustfull thoughts to enter into a mans mind. Also the Bible tells us that we are not to do something that may cause our brother to sin(stumble). Just because you can go there and it not have any affect on you, your Brother may not be so lucky. We are to encorage one another and help eachother out. If we see our Brother/Sister stumble then we are to approach them and let then know (in a loving, caring way).
Also it just tears my heart to see these types of places be able to survive. It just tells me more and more each day how bad our society have gotten. If a buisness can get away with having a requirement to work there that you can not be able to touch your elbows together in front of your chest then you could work there. What does that tell you about our society in a whole?? When the cities that used to house all the top buisnesses in the area now have moved out and the city is now considered the slums, and there are strip/nudie places all over the place. There are "adult" themed book stores on just about every corner. It just breaks my heart to go downtown anymore.
We need a HUGE Spirituall awakening in ths country and without us Christians getting on our knees and praying as hard as we can then I do not forsee us as a Nation lasting much longer. The ONLY way that there is going to be change in this country GOD is going to have to do it!!!

Drinking alcohol is not a sin, getting drunk is!!
JESUS NEVER SINNED. HE LIVED A PERFECT LIFE THAT NONE OF US COULD!!!
He took your sins, my sins, the whole worlds sins and carried the weight of them on His shoulders when He died on the Rugged old CROSS of Calvary!!
Jesus hung out with sinners every were He went. That was His life. He came here to preach the Good Word from His Father to ALL the sinners of the world that we may have eternal life.

tenor, look at my next post, I explained what I meant. I was being sarcastic. The building does not make us a sinner, the SIN makes us a sinner. There is a difference. Just like being in a garage does not make us a car, going to church does not make us a Christian, being inside Hooters does not make us a sinner, being lustful makes us a sinner. We can sin everywhere, so should we avoid everywhere? I mean, we can sin in church. YES, CHURCH! Should we not go to church? We can sin while we are in our office. Should we quit our job? Of course not! Hooters is a restaurant and if you go there for the purpose just to eat food, it is not a sin. Let me ask you, do you go to a restaurant like Applebee's? You shouldn't because they serve beer and that is a temptation for people to get drunk. Same with many other restaurants around, they all serve beer. Also, you shouldn't go to a grocery store because they serve beer and cigarettes. You see what I'm saying. Going inside the restaurant does not make you the sinner, it's the sin that makes you the sinner.

What would Jesus have done?
He would have gone to Hooters to tell all the sinners there to repent.
We don't have a hooters in Australia (that I've heard of) but I know its where the waitresses have big.......well.....hooters, right?
Well, I think it is a sin first for the women to flaunt themselves specifically to make money, secondly for the owners to use these women for the purpose of enticing patrons through their lusts and for monetary gain and thirdly for the people who attend specifically to perve and lust at these women.
It promotes lust and adultery etc. as was mentioned earlier, just looking at a woman lustfully is considered adultery.
Now if you want to go to Hooters and preach repentance to the people there, then that would be OK to go.....
That's my opinion.

But Jesus only preached repetance to the Jews, the people He was a member of. If there are Christians there for lusting after the girls, we should preach repentance to the Christians, but to the nonChristians we should treat them with love. I am not going to go off on my "love talk" because I do that about every other post, but it's all about love.

Jesus was perfect,,,we may strive to be more like Him everyday but we will ALWAYS fall short. The whole dying and resurrection thing, yeah that was the point, God KNEW we could never be perfect.
Servant4Ever I commend you for staying strong in what you believe, I think that it is important that more people do that now, in times such as these. I agree with you 100% that going to a place does not make you a sinner, the intent makes you a sinner. I have attended completely secular concerts and things with my youth group to preach and such, a little so that my youth group could better understand how to help people. Now HOOTERS has some darn good food so I have heard and thus why condemn a place because there are people who go there for ulterior purposes? Some people go into a store to steal, should we avoid going there too? There are alternative places to buy groceries but we choose the Fred Meyer or Safeway because we like it, regardless of other peoples' intentions.
People need to lighten up a bit and not take things so seriously.

Yes, we do need a Spiritual awakening for both the lost and US Christians. Yes, us Christians. We need to realize that we have been a part of the reason Christianity looks so bad in this culture. We need to stop being so judgmental and hypocritical and start loving! It is by our love that the world will know we are His disciples. We shoulnd't care about the "do" and "do not" lists. Christianity is not about rules, it is about love and grace. We are sinners and we should not act like we are perfect. If we act like we are perfect, that is hypocrisy. We need to realize that we are sinners (GASP). How about we start working on our own sin rather than the sins of others, and I think we can start making a difference in the world. Remember, Jesus, YES, JESUS, told us to take the logs out of our eyes before we mention the speck in another's eyes. I seriously think the largest enemy against the Christian Church are the Christians. If all we care about is rules and regulations, that does NOT set a person free. Jesus is the Truth and the Truth will set you free. Only Jesus will set us free. How about we all get down on our own knees and repent of our own sins and start working against OUR sins before we work on the sins of others? How many are willing to follow Jesus and not the rules?

What would Jesus have done?I do not like it when someone uses this. We know what Jesus would have done and what He did.
The question that we need to ask is "What would Jesus want US to do?"
Give that a thought before you do anything because if you are truly walking that the Christian walk you have all kinds of people watching you all over the place to see if you stumble or mess up.
To quote a song by Gold City~"Walk the Talk"
"You got to walk the walk
The walk your talking
Someone's watching the walk your walkng
someones listening to the talk your talking
Freind we better walk the line
we're a mirror of Gods Holy Son
Getting the great commision done
So instead of just talking all that talk
Freind you better walk the talk."
Also I keep hearing that we are nothing but "sinners", this is wrong if you are saved. If you are saved by the Grace of God THe Father then you are no longer a sinner. You sill sin but you are no longer a sinner (this is a huge difference). For the only sinners in the wolrd are the lost, not the saved.

tenor, we are sinners saved by grace. Since we are Jesus followers, we should do what Jesus did, so we DO need to ask the WWJD. Since Jesus tells us to love our neighbor as ourself, do you think maybe it could be a witnessing tool to show how different a Christian can be by not lusting after the women? Have you ever been to hooter's Servant? You don't go there to witness or show love! I do get going there for food, but I have SERIOUS doubts about whether YOU would witness if you were there! I'm sure they get their fair share of Christians in there throwing the Bible at them, and love to an overworked waitress is bigger tips, not spouting off about Jesus (speaking as a former waiter).
Throwing out hypothetical situations is fun, but you really need to stick to reality. The truth is that people do NOT go to Hooters to witness or to show love. They go there for food and/or girls. Yes, I think it's entirely possible to go without sinning. No, I don't think many people make it.

We've been overlooking this question. IMHO, if you're even wondering about whether you should discuss it with her, you're probably thinking it's wrong to go there. I mean, would you wonder if you should it discuss with her first if you were thinking of eating lunch at Applebee's or McDonald's? Hooter's, OTOH, could turn into a serious conversation.
I honestly don't know too many men that could eat in a place like Hooter's without their brains going south. I'm not saying there aren't any, just that it isn't the norm.

Jesus didn't frequent places of sin to enjoy the trappings of the places. He went there to preach. If you are going to Hooters to preach, then fine.
Jesus went to parties and weddings, but these were not gatherings of people sinning. There was no drunkenness in the Hebrew culture of the time. There were no flamboyant dances or strippers that frequented these religious festivals.
Jesus converted the worst of sinners. Hanging out with sinners and teaching is much different than hanging out with sinners to sin. We are to keep up appearances of abstinence of sin to keep our witness intact. If we go somewhere that is sinful, if it is not to minister, then we are not keeping true to the example that Jesus set.

Also if you read the account of Levi's (Matthew's) when he first met Jesus in Luke 5:27-32 it says~~
Call of Levi (Matthew)
LK 5:27 After that He went out and noticed a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me."
LK 5:28 And he left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him.
LK 5:29 And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them.
LK 5:30 The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"
LK 5:31 And Jesus answered and said to them, "It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick.
LK 5:32 "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."
He was in those types of places to Preach thw Word Of God and to call them to repentance (turn from there sinnful ways and follow Him).
and as for when you said that we are still sinners check out what the Word of GOd says about it~~
Romans 6:6-18
RO 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
RO 6:7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
RO 6:8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
RO 6:9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.
RO 6:10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
RO 6:11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
RO 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,
RO 6:13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
RO 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
RO 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
RO 6:16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
RO 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,
RO 6:18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
You were freed from your sinnful nature when you accepted Christ as your Lord, Yes we are saved by Grace, BUT you are nolonger a sinner, you still sin. (HUNGE DIFFERENCE LIKE I SAID BEFORE).
And just like this passage states you are only slaves to one thing, either sin or to God. You can only serve one master at a time. And like Joshua said ~"As for me and My house we will serve the Lord..."

If you're worried about lusting after the waitresses when and if you go to Hooters....I reccommend sitting out on the front patio (like I did when I went.) There are hardly any waitresses out there (they're all inside) and you can sit back and enjoy your food. (Which, is the reason I went. My sister and my mom wanted to go there for crying out loud- I didn't care one way or another...I was just hungry!) And yes, they have awesome food there. I reccommend the buffalo wings.

No, this is not a sin. However, that does not make it a right thing to do. There are many things that are not sin, but are very unwise and should be avoided.
If the question is, "Should I eat at Hooters?", I would suggest not, especially as a young christian. But, my reasoning for not eating there has more to do with culture than the issue of sin.

It is better to avoid such places. If I liked the food, I would either take it "to-go" or sacrifice my apetite for God's will. Even though I am a female, that place worries me and reminds of sin. If I do not lust for the "boobs", but I certainly would be tempted to judge the women that work there and men that stare at the servers.
And for those who say that we can sin in other places, in restaurants where there is beer served, and in the church where whatever sins may come, those places do not promote sin, like Hooters does. Hooters have gone too far, and it's purpose is to rise lust in men. Beer is not sin, and you hardly can drink so much beer to become very drunk. But vulgar women attract the eye and one can sin only by one glance. What I want to say is that drinking beer is not a sin, but looking at women is. Looking at beer in the menu is not sin, as well as dringking a glass of it. It is even good for health. But when such wemen surround you, the message is very intence, and it is very hard to avoid one lustful thought. Especially for men, whose instincts are to mate (women's instinct is to create a steady and financed environment for their children). That is why for men there is Hooters and strip bars, and for women rich parties and beauty shops. So, better to avoid.
And for those who say that we must do what Jesus did, that is not right. We cannot do what he did exactly, because we are not perfect. He did not have lust, He is God the Perfect, so He could harmlessly be around sinful people and prostitutes, pharisees. Remember, He warned the Apostles to be careful with the teaching of the pharisees? We should avoid things that promote sin.
And one more thing. Sin always happens gradually, as everything in spiritual life. We gradually change our ways to ackwire Christ in our lifes, and we also may gradually fall into sin. If we do one small thing that we think is not sin, but that promotes it, the next step is to make the actual sin. If one goes to Hooters and is being around the servers, it is a step towards sin. The next step is to lust, and the next is to commit adultery. Now, one may keep the thoughts of lust and suppress them, but they would start bugging him and would not go away. That is proven in my life by experience. Let not even one thought enter the heart, let not give any possibility of sin to get you, and then you will avoid big things like adultery. Because devil is cunning and he tells us: "what is wrong with me going to Hooters if I go there to eat?" And the next thing you know is you are staring at the boobs. And then you relax and forget Christ and then when you come out, you realize what a poison that place had implanted in you. I'm not that pure to be able to avoid sinful thoughts (for example, of judgement), so I avoid things that may in any way remind me of sin.

Hi
I do not see a problem with it for me. But if it is causing YOU to lust you will need to decide what is best for you.
God Bless

I have been there and it all depends on how you behave. What you say, how you act etc. trust me they know the difference and the girls aren't used to being treated like human beings.
The food is a bit expensive but then who goes there just for the food?

Yes, it is a sin, but not for the reason you think.
I ended up having to go there once at lunch against my ability to decline, and when I told my wife, she was a bit upset, but I explained to her how it came about - and also the fact that girls on the street and at the mall wear more revealing clothes than the girls at Hooters. Which is the truth. I wouldn't be ashamed to take my family to Hooters.
But ... the reason it's a sin to eat at Hooters is because their hot wings sauce has hydrogenated oil in it - so you can't safely eat it or use it to dip your hot wings - and the wings themselves are the greasiest hot wings I've ever had. The frozen hot wings you buy at Sam's taste much, much better.

Sin isn't a big list of Do and Do Not's. Sin is also doing something that betrays your own heart.
If you fall into lustful thoughts or your eyes tend to wander lustfully...then yes. Going to Hooters is a SIN.
If for some reason you are able to not be swayed at all by women with extremely tight shirts (which I find pretty unlikely for any guy who's NOT gay) then it's not a sin. Remember, Jesus hung out with some pretty low-class, scum of the earth types of people. But HE didn't allow himself to be effected or tempted by them.
Personally...I find Hooters and any place like it to be insulting because it's nothing but encouraging the degredation of women in our society and the materalistic view of people.

I've never been there.
I suppose I agree with previous posts which express the opinion that dining at Hooters is only a sin if you cannot go there without giving into lustful thoughts. I also agree with the earlier statement that most of the women one encounters in shopping malls, or even at some schools wear more revealing clothing that Hooters girls.
Personally, I doubt I would patronize Hooters. I have multiple reasons, not the least of which is my agreement that Hooters perpetuates the idea that women are little more than objects of sexual desire. I have far more respect for my sisters in Christ than that.

Good point. Even if the reality of Hooters is not all that bad, its premise is.
