I personally believe that you get into heaven through excepting Jesus into your heart and life and believe that he did die on the cross for our sins and he did rise again.(john 3:16)
BUT WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS!

Jump off a cliff, and you'll get to heaven.
The question is, how do you get heaven to you?

Have faith, which involves deeds. Love God, which is by obeying His commandments.

There are 3 things that first come to my mind that are IN the Bible.
1. Believe in Jesus.
2. Do what Jesus says (he says in Mark I think that its not enough to say "Lord Lord" you have to do things he tells you to do)
3. By forgiving those who offended you, your enemies. Its clearly stated in the passages somewhere that if you don't forgive your enemies your heavenly father won't be able to accept you the same way you weren't able to accept youre enemies.

Jumping off a cliff will pull you in the direction of gravity, right into hell, where you will be tormented without God forever.

Lighten up dude. Enlighten yourself. I was being facetious.
The Bible is not a book primarily about getting to heaven. If it was, it would be only one verse long. John 3:16 would be all you need, because everything is there for you to go to heaven.
But the Bible is a book about how to get heaven inside of us...in this life. And yes, there is a heaven, but heaven's for dead people, and we're not dead, yet. It's not a book primarily about how to die well, it's a book about how to live well. Jesus said I've come that you might have life, and more abundantly.
It's not a problem for God to get us into heaven, but for heaven to come to us, there's a load of stuff that we need to get rid of - our judgments, our history, our biases, our criticisms, our unforgiveness, our anger...etc etc., well that takes time.
Our salvation is of no use to us or our world when we are in heaven. Absolutely of no use to us when we're in heaven, because there's no sick people, there's no offended people, there are no problems, no giants. But it can change who we are and what we are here on earth.

Then you missed the point of it all. Our salvation is more than just escaping hell.

Do not die in a state of mortal sin and you should go to heaven.

God IS our salvation!!!
If we have God we have salvation.
Now, how to receive salvation/God is the most debated.
If you have God...you'll be in heaven. If your salvation is of no use to you in heaven...you are saying that God is of no use to you...and I'm sure to stay in heaven, you'll need God.
"He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life."
1 John 5:12
Jesus is God, and God is our salvation. Jesus is also that eternal life (1 John 1:2)...to have Jesus is to have eternal life.

Romans 10:9
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

That's about it in a nutshell.

Just don't forget James 2:14
What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?

I think if you truly believe Jesus is Lord, your 'deeds' will be evident. God really changes your heart when you come to know Him. We're not saved because of our good works. Instead, we want to do good works because we are saved.
(did that makes sense?)

Our "works" prove to man that we are in Christ but Jesus already knows if we are or not, we don't have to prove anything to Him. He is all knowing.

This doesn't mean that we don't have to do anything:
John 14:15 ASV If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.
In other words, if you don't keep the commandments, those of the New Covenant, then you don't love Jesus. It's as simple as that.

Do you know anyone who keep all the commandments of God? NO? well, I guess none of us really love Him them.
The fact is that we all sin, not one of us is perfect and not one of us does everything that God would have us do, all the time. We mess up, we fall short, that is the whole point of Jesus dying for our sins.

We are granted eternal life in Heaven solely by the grace of God. He graciously gives life to His elect on the basis of Christ's vicarious obedience.
God bless

But we must all try. Don't forget the parable of the talents.

That's not the point that was being made, and that's not the point that Christ was making. There is a stark difference between stumbling, and being disobedient.
