On the 8th. I had been planning to visit the St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood since before Great Lent. Andreas or anybody else, if you want me to pick up some of their books for you, give me a price limit, I'll purchase them and ship them to you for the cost of the book and shipping from the states.

About the Monastery
The Brotherhood was founded in 1963 in San Francisco, moving to Platina in 1969, by Fr. Seraphim Rose (+1982) and Fr. Herman. It received the blessing of St. John Maximovich (+1966). In 2000, the monastery was accepted into the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The Brotherhood is self-supporting through the translation and publication of books on Orthodoxy. A periodical,The Orthodox Word is published bi-monthly. There are 22 monastics in residence.

The St. Herman Press is the publishing arm of the St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood, a monastic-missionary Orthodox Christian brotherhood which is part of the Western American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, under His Grace Longin, Bishop of Western America.

The St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood was founded in 1963 with the blessing of St. John Maximovitch, Archbishop and miracle-worker of Shanghai and San Francisco. The Press was founded in 1965 with the intent of making materials about the Orthodox Christian Faith available, primarily to the English-speaking world. Since then St. Herman Press has printed over a hundred titles in English and Russian and has published a bi-monthly magazine, The Orthodox Word.

"May the Lord bless the preaching of THE ORTHODOX WORD. May this preaching serve for the strengthening of true Orthodox Faith and Christian life in North America, with the help and prayers of Blessed Father Herman of Alaska, whose sanctity was manifested on this continent, and the Aleut Martyr Peter, who suffered martyrdom in San Francisco."

That's awesome, Bruncvik! I hope to visit a monastery someday in the not too distant future. I hope this visit will provide you with spiritual guidance and the opportunity to draw nearer to God. It looks beautiful, too.:)

That's great news, man!

Well, I have some books from them already. But if you could find an Icon of St. John of San Francisco, I would love to have it! If you could find one for under 21 dollars. I would send you cash for it, and the shipping. Thanks for being willing to go the trouble.:)

Nice photo. Why are the Orthodox parishes so pretty and expensive looking? Is it because they ask so much money of each member?

Most Roman Catholic parishes are average at best.

Because we believe that our best and most beautiful is what is required to worship The Holy Trinity.

There are plenty of Orthodox missions (like mine) who worship in makeshift locations - like store fronts, etc, that are not particularly beautiful. It's the best we can do at the moment. But the moment we can afford to build a beautiful Temple, that is what we do. We aren't minimalists, like the Protestants, and even Catholics have become.

I wont be returning to this forum or using a computer for a while God willing. So Good Bye and may Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ guide and protect you all.

S_L_C,

The problems at Platina are in the past, and they are now part of the Serbian Orthodox Church. For a while, they were off on their own, but that was under a different abbott, etc. They're on the up & up.

I've been to Ascension Monastery (in Resaca, Georgia right?) I love that place and h hope to go back soon. Fr. Parthernios, Fr. Justin, Fr. Mark, Fr. Damian, Fr. Maximos, Fr. Nazarios, Fr. George, etc....I love the whole lot of them. Great place to visit.

Once we're settled in Washington state, my husband could go make a pilgrimage/retreat to the beautiful ROCOR monastery on the unbelievably cool Vashon Island. I would like to take a retreat to a women's monastery someday, but where? I know there's one in Colorado - does anyone know of any others, or where I could find a list of them on-line?

There's one not too far from me, Holy Transfiguration in Ellwood City, PA, that's a women's monastery. But that's a bit of a trip for you if you're living in Washington, huh?

Three more days. I can't wait. I am riding down w/ Fr. Athanasius and his daughter, as well as possibly an Orthodox woman who is my age, who might be visiting St. Xenia's Skete which is 12 miles from Platina. Father and his daughter are going on a backpacking trip in Redding. He laments that he can't go to Platina with me: he often says he wishes to be buried there. It is he ho recommended this pilgrimage to me.

I have heard some disturbing news about that particular monastery.

They are legitimate now. I know the stories as well. All in the past. They are a canonical monastery now.

Once we're settled in Washington state, my husband could go make a pilgrimage/retreat to the beautiful ROCOR monastery on the unbelievably cool Vashon Island.

It's pretty tiny. It is gorgeous though. I was on Vashon a few weeks ago. I emailed Fr. Tryphon about a visit and this is what he said:

We would love to have you visit the monastery. We do allow overnight guests on a very limited basis, given the limited guest space. Also, you are very welcome to come to the monastery for a day visit. Our Sunday celebration of the Divine Liturgy starts at about 9:30. We can recommend a ferry time if you call us. We do ask that pilgrims call the monastery before taking a ferry.

Speaking of Vashon and Platina...

The All-Merciful Saviour monastery at Vashon has an Icon of Fr. Seraphim Rose of Platina...
