View Full Version : Rule 3 Amendment: No links or email addresses in signatures
Erwin
28th November 2003, 10:19 PM
This is just notice to all members - Forum Rule 3 has been amended to disallow any links or email addresses in sigs. This rule is retrospective.
[nospam]
Staff will be editing signatures of members that contain links or email addresses to remove these. Please amend your signature as soon as you can, or staff will do it for you.
Links and email addresses may be placed in your Profile or CF homepage, just not in your signature.
Thanks.

Erwin does this no links include pictures too? I was trying to put an animated gif from an outside location and it wouldn't let me.

Yes, that should be fine... again, I will need to recode it so that this is allowed...
I'm at work at the moment... when I get home I will do this...

Why ever not? What harm were they doing?

Fixed the bug.
Signature rules are now:
You cannot:
Post external links or email addresses.
You can:
Post links to pages on CF including posts and threads.
Post externally hosted images. :)

It prevents people from joining the site and posting for the shear purpose of promoting their website. People spam like this all the time and it's a pain. The Christian Forums are here for Christians to fellowship and come together, not advertise. Granted, not everyone that posted a link was not doing so for the sole reason of gaining more traffic to their site, but a rule has to be made. If Erwin makes exceptions, he loses control. This is the best solution for everyone. :)

I'd understand that reasoning of not letting links beening posted if the person was indeed spamming the site with "EvErYonEE gOO to My SITE!!!!111one" but I've yet to see that. It's just a link in a profile. *shrugs* Not a big deal. Blahblahblah this board almost has as many pointless rules as school. Hah. *walks off*

I think it's a fair enough rule. It's far too difficult to check all the links in everyone's signature for something inappropiate. But it's something that needs to be regulated. This is the best way.

Notice that you can still put links in your profile or CF homepage. Just not in your sig. :)

Blessings,
I totally agree.
Everybody can have a website link button that shows up with every post, we can put url addresses in the interest and biography section and when one gets 1000 blessings we can have a free CF page and place links if we like with arrows that blink in neon "click HERE" ^_^ . I mean if one really wants to get creative, record an auto file telling everrrrrrrrybody about your cool website :D

why didnt someone just pm me and ask me to remove that portion of my sig instead of the entire thing? or why didnt that mod just remove the link part?
i dont understand why my entire sig had to be deleted?

i dont understand why my entire sig had to be deleted? You're right - that is inappropriate. I will make sure mods don't do this next time. All they need to do is remove the link. My apologies on behalf of whoever did it.
I've blessed you as compensation...

hmm oh well its no worries, i just thought perhaps in the new rule maybe the quotes i had were deemed against the rules or something. so i wanted to know if that were the case before i replace them in my sig.
Erwin you rock. Thanks for making this place happy

apparently trouble-shooting is not completely done :(
although i hadnt had problems with the images on my sig, today i changed my website (where the images were located) so they are now replaced by those handy "x"s down there... I went to go change my sig with the new locations of the images, and it wouldn't let me because i was inserting "links" into my sig.
i thought this was fixed already?

It is fixed. I can put images in my sig without problems. Are you sure you got the [img] tags right? I managed to put your images in my sig with no problems.
Erwin

I can see many other members linking to external images with no problems. So it's not a bug.

Have you tried the insert image icon http://www.christianforums.com/images/editor/insertimage.gifverses using the img tag? That keeps you from inserting an url address into you signature.

i know i got the URL right cuz they displayed in the window, but when i previewed it said "error--no links in sig" or something along those lines... going to go try again and try shekinahs suggestion too.

Also make sure you go through all of your board options and check the boxes for displaying your image in case you forgot that. :)

This doesn't appear to be the problem. It seems like it's thinking that the URL of the image is a link when in fact it's wrapped in image tags. I tried both using the editor's "Insert Image" button and coding the image tags myself. Neither were allowed to be saved and they both popped up the rule about no links or emails in signatures.

Hehe...um, thanks, but I didn't lose any blessings trying your suggestion. The blessings don't get taken unless the sig actually goes through. (I did have less blessings than before, but that's because I blessed someone ;) )

It does this to me every time I try to put a picture.
I've found that if I copy it into the notepad and then copy it back where I want it, it makes the link go away.
I got the picture below by copying the img stuff above onto notepad and then copying it back here!
