Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

This is a very high point in Jeremiah's prophecies, did you know this passage is the longest sequence of OT verse to be quoted in the NT in it's entirety (Hebrews 8:8-12).

Verse 31 contains the only OT phrase "new covenant" which (together with it's NT echoes) has come down to us (via Latin) as "New Testament," the name that would come to be applied to the distinctivly Christian part of the biblical canon.

"Behold, the days come" which means "The days are coming" (as in vv 27, 38), a phrase often refers to the Messianic era.

As the old covenant was solemnized by the blood of sacrificial animals, so the new would be dolemnized by the blood of Christ.

The house of Israel... the house of Judah . The reunited people of God.

Jeremiah 3:18 9 (niv) - In those days the house of Judah will join the house of Israel, and together they will come from a northern land to the land I gave your forefathers as an inheritance.
