View Full Version : Seeking Orthodox Emoticon/Smilie Ideas...

Wisdom's Child
29th July 2004, 11:57 AM
I've started playing with a new Gif program, and I have been experimenting with Orthodox concept Smilies and Emoticons...

Any suggestions?

Here is my latest one, Orthodox Prayer...

What do you think?

Awesome! I've often wished we had a smilie that would cross itself! Hmm, I'll do some thinking for other ideas.....

Good job, Wisdom!

Well, it's really, really good, except.............now he's crossing from left to right. The direction of crossing was correct on the other one, it was just the wrong hand being used.

Hey WC,
The correction on the hand looks good, but he is now crossing himself from left to right, which is bass ackwards for us EOs. Great work though!! I like the idea of a female emoticon with headscarf, and a priest w/o a hat and giving the blessing, from left to right would be way cool!

Hmmm....

priest swinging a censor with aromatic smoke billowing forth?
I'll look into it.

I'm redoing the priest blessing tonight, there seems to be a bit of noise in the animation that needs cleaned up. Also shouldn't there be something in the other hand? a septer, rod, scroll, cross... ?

Ladies, what color scarf should I put on the woman crossing?

The priest looks like he is wearing a green surgical mask or is it just my computer? If not, is there any way you could make the beard brown or black or white?

Hey, I have an idea for a smilie. Can you make an inquirer/catechumen smilie? It would have it's head bowed down looking at a book, and then it would look up and it's head would explode. Appropriate, don't you think?;)

As of this afternoon, I'll be able to get back to the project.

I have been quite busy over the weekend. Had to do a double shift Saturday.
Today I slept in till 1:00 pm, and about to take the family out to lunch.
I should have the Priest Blessing complete by dinner time, and then it's the Woman with scarf crossing. The Priest Blessing will be holding a Bishop's Cross in the left hand, and have a lt brown beard...

In the works are;

Inquisitor/Berean reading the Bible and pointing, with a banner reading "Read the Book"...
and
A blend of the "Banned" Smilie reading a post, with the "Mad" Smilie hopping around stating " Is Outrage!!!"

Of course, any corrections or suggestions will be appreciated.

Hehe! How about one where there's two faces, and when one of them scratches his/her nose, the other one nervously and frantically crosses himself/herself :D

(Sadly, I still do this out of reflex. Out of the corner of my eye, I'll see a hand go for the face and I cross myself without hesitation. Only to find out that they were blowing their nose)

Here's where I am on the Priest Blessing, give it a good looking over and tell me if any corrections are needed. I'm going to put a scarf on the Crossing Man in me meanwhile.

Grand_Duchess-Elizaveta, I could make the head explode (maybe with a few fireworks), as part of the whole "Going Off" rant...

MosestheBlack, sounds interesting, but don't be too offended if I put that one at a lower priority on the list. But I do want a Smilie picking nose myself...

Also, after this little fix, how do I send this smilie to my Fr. Joshua, could be be used somewhere off this board, say in an email?

Also, after this little fix, how do I send this smilie to my Fr. Joshua, could be be used somewhere off this board, say in an email?

The priest is blessing the congregation in the correct way. He is not making the Sign of the Cross.

Dear Wisdom's Child:

Fantastic job.

The mitre that the Eastern Orthodox Bishops wear is a cap made with gold, precious stones, and small icons imbedded in it. It is round. Let me see if I can find a picture of one. Maybe Oblio can best describe it. It may have gold thread embroidery - I don't think that it's solid metal. Yes, there is a cross on top.

Be back shortly.

However, the way he has it would work. The bishops wear the jeweled mitres when they are vested for services, but when they are not, they wear the type that he has the bishop wearing. The bishop can bless people wearing the one that he is wearing.

You know, working on this project is teaching me more about Orthodoxy than I though possible. It brings up questions that I had not considered...

The Bishop can be changed, if need be. I had no idea the wide variety of hats and outfits that exist in the EOC, and each with it's own purpose and Tradition.

No don't change the one you have, as that is the way we usually see them.

I wonder if it would be humanly possible to make a smiley that's kissing an icon?

OK, quick question from someone who hasn't witnessed the act personally...
What are the steps/motions done when one venerates (kisses?) an Icon?
What should "Smilie" do?

OK, quick question from someone who hasn't witnessed the act personally...
What are the steps/motions done when one venerates (kisses?) an Icon?
What should "Smilie" do?

There are two ways - found that out really quick.

I went to a Greek Church and crossed myself with a small and quick Sign of the Cross, then bent down and touched the floor and then straightened up to kiss the Icon. Kind of took me a long time before I could do this gracefully. I did this before receiving Holy Communion also. Then low and behold, at the end of the service, as I received the blessed bread (antidoron), the priest asked me, and several ya-yas (old grandmas) asked me, from which Russian Orthodox Church I had come.

The Greeks bend down and touch the floor (little metania). As they begin to straighten up, they immediately make the Sign of The Cross over their entire body (touch the floor then immediately touch the forehead, then the belt around the waist, then right shoulder, and finally the left shoulder). So it's blessing the entire body to Christ's service. What a beautiful thought.

Hope this helps.

Elizabeth

SORRY, MY DYSLEXIA AT WORK

PS All Orthodox Christians (except Old Believers) hold the thumb and index finger together(representing the two natures of Christ: God an Man). Then they fold back into the palm of the hand the rest of the three fingers - this represents the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One God, Amen.

The opposite is true in the above PS.

Thanks for pointing this out. I was reading about the Old Believers (who are found in the ROCOR) and got mixed up.

Actually, we in the OCA do it exactly opposite this, joining the thumb, index and middle fingers and pressing the ring finger and pinky into the palm.

That's what I've heard as well. Which is why I'm always a little confusiated as to why the Old Believers go the opposite and claim the same. If the two fingers joined symbolizes the dual nature of Christ on the earth, why would said fingers be raised instead of pressed to the palm?

How to make the sign of the cross

When we are at prayer we rededicate ourselves to God by making the Sign of the Cross on ourselves. First we join the first three fingers of our right hand together (the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger), and we bend the other two fingers down to the palm. We then trace on ourselves the Cross by touching the three joined fingers of the right hand to the forehead, the breast, the right shoulder and the left shoulder. After forming the Cross on ourselves we slightly bow our heads to express to God our reverence and humility.

When we join our three fingers together it is as if we wanted to say: "I believe in God, One in the Trinity; in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; not in one person, but Three Persons; not in three gods, but One God." When we bend the other two fingers of our right hand down to the palm it is as if we were saying: "I believe that Our Savior Jesus Christ, Who is at the same time Real God and Real Man, the God-man, came down to earth for our salvation." We touch our forehead to ask God to sanctify our thoughts; our breast, to sanctify our senses; our shoulders, to strengthen our wills for the doing and keeping of God's commandments. When we make the Sign of the Cross we bear the inscription: "I belong to Jesus Christ"; and we show thereby that we want to live and act not for ourselves but for the Lord our God. As the Cross is being made we say the following prayer (unless we are saying another prayer at the time): "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." We say these words to make it clear that we want to belong to God and serve Him alone.

From http://www.stlukeorthodox.com/html/parishinfo/signofthecross.cfm

Visitors who wish to make the Sign of the Cross should also follow the lead of others in making the Sign at the appropriate times. Orthodox Christians cross themselves by joining index finger, middle finger, and thumb of the right hand together and touching them to the forehead, chest, right shoulder, and left shoulder.

The thumb, index finger, and middle finger joined symbolize the Holy Trinity while the two remaining fingers symbolize the dual nature of Christ (fully human and fully divine).

Wisdom's Child
12th August 2004, 10:19 PM
I'm working on the venerating Icon smilie, It's taking a little experimentation in getting the Icon reduced enough in size to be usable and yet still recognizable. So far I'm at 90x90 pixels and my emoticons are all at the 45x45 pixel upper range for emoticons. If I can work out the resolution and filter combo that can get the Icon jpegs down to 50x50 pixels I think that it can be done. (the problem in size for those that are curious is not with this forum per se, but making emoticons that conform to a standard wherein they can be used in email and other media without an obvious size difference.) If that can be done successfully, then I can make a Venerating Smilie and then inset your choice of Icon or Saint.

I read that the reason the Old Belivers rejected it is because it came to Russia later. Someone, I forget who, tried to line Russian Orthodoxy up more closely with the Greeks, but that change was initially rejected because the two-fingered way had come to Russia earlier and was 'more ancient.' Bp. KALLISTOS wrote about that in The Orthodox Church

Many priests have told me that they were encouraged to quit smoking when they entered the seminary and it was the most difficult thing to do. Some priests just could not quit because it is such an addictive vice.

It has only been recently that smoking has been linked with heart disease, cancer, etc. So more older priests smoke than younger ones. Sadly, a lot of the older smokers are dying.

WC, you'll have to be careful other Christian forums don't steal your icons and claim them as their own. You might have to play detective for a while, because those icons are just simply amazing.

How about an Orthodox nun? That hasn't been asked yet.

http://sevenofnine.cherrytaco.com/Miscellanea/Emoticons/icon_borg_ani.gif That is quite rude of you! Orthodox Nuns and Monks are very holy men and women and deserve a little more respect than that! There is a very good reason they choose to live life the way they do. Maybe someday when you grow up and become Orthodox you will understand it a little better! Is outrage!

Matthias
23rd August 2004, 04:03 AM
Take a chill pill! Just get off my case, why don't you? It seems every single day you find something to pick on me about in my posts. It's time to move on, okay? As to your reference of me needing to grow up; there's no need for personal attacks. I suggested a dancing nun, not a nun who does anything out of the ordinary, really.

For your information, I am close friends with several Roman Catholic nuns through my time as a Roman Catholic, and several have taught me at school. One whom I am particularly close with partakes in ballroom dancing, watches sports, dresses in trendy clothes, and also says crazy things. She is a very cool nun who is near 70.

Yes, that's right, she dances! Is that a sin? Is it wrong for an Orthodox nun to dance? Last I checked it wasn't! Nuns are normal people. I don't think my request was anything to get all excited about, really, and definitely not a reason for you to get all wound up either. It's not illegal or immoral to dance, so what's your problem?

Michael the Iconographer
23rd August 2004, 05:59 AM
Matthias, I don't care about what Roman Catholics do, I am Orthodox and they are heterodox. There is so much error in your comments that I do not know where to start so I am just going to let you continue in your errors and hope one day God will open your eyes and teach you to think before you say stupid things. I would proclaim anathema on you but I am not a bishop and it would not be worth my time.

Matthias
23rd August 2004, 06:44 AM
You are one of the most arrogant people I have ever met in my life. I am sorry I have not been a high and mighty Orthodox like yourself for as long as you have. But your downright rude comments like this are hardly helping me in my journey.

Also, calling my comments "stupid" is not very kind of you, and I hope God opens YOUR eyes to how rude and arrogant you can be to people at this forum.

Matthias
23rd August 2004, 06:45 AM
I never claimed to be an expert on Orthodoxy. I am here to learn, not be picked on.

Michael the Iconographer

prodromos
23rd August 2004, 07:49 AM
I never claimed to be an expert on Orthodoxy. I am here to learn

Then you ought to be more cautious about what you say. I too find the idea of a dancing nun emoticon to be offensive. Please keep in mind that a lot of things you may think are "normal" in Catholicism, simply do not translate into Orthodoxy.

John.

Matthias
23rd August 2004, 07:52 AM
I don't want to argue with you over something as simple as what I said, as it's not pleasant for the visitors of TAW to see. However, I will ask you this. Are you telling me there is not a single Orthodox nun in this entire would who doesn't dance? Is it somehow forbidden for them to do so?

As I previously said, I know many Roman Catholic nuns who watch sport every weekend, several who go to my local park to relax and feed the ducks, and a few of them also take dancing lessons. Are you telling me Orthodox nuns do not do this? If Orthodox nuns can't have a bit of fun in their life, then it's a sad world we live in...

Matthias
23rd August 2004, 07:56 AM
Everybody dances if the music is right. Nuns, priests, monks, the young, the elderly, the sick, the dying.

It's okay to have an icon of some babushka hitting a child with a huge over-sized cane and exploding heads, but it's not alright to have a nun doing a little dance? To me, something doesn't add up here...

Matthias
23rd August 2004, 07:57 AM
Also, I do think dancing nuns is normal in Roman Catholicism; or at least not out of the ordinary. If this isn't the same in Orthodoxy, then I have to ask myself if Orthodoxy is really for me...

Matthias
23rd August 2004, 08:02 AM
I respect nuns and their work 100%, I've grown up with them since I was 5. That's 15 years of being around them. This is not about me not respecting them, because they have my respect 100%, I have not met any nuns I have not loved. However, I am also realistic and realise whether they be Roman Catholic or Orthodox, they're allowed to have fun, and I consider an icon of a dancing nun to reflect this.

You have really blown this way out of control!

Wisdom's Child
23rd August 2004, 08:10 AM
Matthias...
Take a deep breath, relax.

Everyone, take it easy.

Emoticons and such are intended to express feelings and provide comic relief.
Sattire is a way to reflect upon ourselves.

Boy, the way everyone is getting upset about the notion of dancing you would think that this is a Southern Baptist room.

Michael the Iconographer
23rd August 2004, 08:58 AM
It is not dancing which upsets me. I love to dance, though I do it quite poorly. It is the idea of a holy monastic nun dancing. Orthodox Nuns spend their lives in monastic contemplation and they don't dance. Catholic Sisters who are not monastic may dance, but a Nun can't because she is purely contemplative. To suggest such a thing is outrage (to quote Fr. Vasily). I guess I would just like to see Matthias show a little respect for holy people and that is all I will say about this subject. Now back to the regularly scheduled program about the fun emoticons which WC creates. To quote Dick Vitale "Their awesome, baby!"

Michael the Iconographer

On a side note, WC how do you get your avatar to do the slide show?

Wisdom's Child
23rd August 2004, 09:38 AM
it's an animated GIF file, just like the emoticons.
The Gif is animated like "stop motion/claymation" and Powerpoint presentations are.
You work one frame at a time, and then modify the fps (frames per second) to something like 1-3 sec per frame.
The Emoticons average 4-8 fps.

A GIF (Graphic Image File) works like an AVI or Shockwave animation, but uses the HTML Browser instead of relying on a media player.

But there are limitations as for length of time and file size, because the entire file resides in RAM memory, and delays the time it takes to load the webpage.
Where Streaming Media can be fed after the page loads.
