Martial arts can teach you some very good things. It also gives you the confidence that if someone decides to start something with you (which I can pretty much guarantee that someone will at some point for no reason) that you can take care of yourself. I can't really see how there could be a moral objection to it but I know that some people would. Why I don't know.

You just gotta check out what your particular gym teaches. Some get into a lot of the eastern religious thought/practice while others don’t. I’ve studied for years, but I asked those questions before I joined. Also, you have more of a choice than just the eastern martial arts, I’m rather particularly found of Krav Maga which is the Israeli martial art. It’s not a flashy show/entertainment combat style but a rather effective combat form. Research it.

I see nothing wrong with Christians learning martial arts as long as it's nothing that teaches belief in pagan gods or rituals. Does this mean I'm an advocate of violence? No! In learning some karate and taekwondo, I found, even as a teenager, I rarely desired to fight people simply because I was scared of seriously injuring or killing someone. When I was taking karate, it was a non-profit organization ran out of a church called Karate For Christ and one of the main rules of was bringing our Bibles to class to study scripture before studying techniques.

nothing wrong with the physical aspect of martial arts as long as you dont get into the spiritually influential side of it.

Don't forget Boxing and Sambo, heck some eastern martial arts such as Karate was developed for practical self defense without the use of weapons though it did evolve from chinese martial arts it is not a form of religious practice.

I see big difference in WWF and Martial Arts like karate, one is absoulutely off the wall while Karate teaches self control.

There is a spiritual aspect of martial arts, but as long as you can take the good stuff without taking the spiritual stuff. We had to bow to our ring, the dolls at the front and our instructor when we entered the gym. I would bow to my instructor but not the ring or the little dolls. Also in Muaithai there is a dance they do at the beginning to give honour to the gods and forefathers. I chose not to do that and I had to tell my instructor that my God doesn't need me to.

I think its much less dangerous than yoga, who's true reason is to prepare the mind and body for 'g'ods to inhabit (read demon possession). Just watch out for the ki, chi and other new age / eastern concepts.

that wwe stuff is borderline pornagraphy at times I dont watch it becouse its acting and the only thing in it is either really sexy women tearing off each others clothes wich is perfect if your not a christian or if you like sweaty men in tights thats cool but its not 4 me

now MMA thats a different story thats an awsome sport especially if you have any experience in the forms that are being used

I second this! I have 27 yrs experience in the martial arts, and Krav Maga, Haganah, Kapap, are some of the most realistic out there. While living in NC I have had the opportunity to train our spec ops community at Ft Bragg and have seen some amazing things.

Another I suggest is the Filipino arts (Pekiti Tersia, Sayok, Bakbakan, etc.), and Silat (Harub, Maphilindo, Serek) and then there is Kuntao. There are many versions of both so dont get mixed up in the Islamic versions like Gayong. You can find Many with no religious ties at all.

I agree with what a lot of others have said here. Martial arts can be a great discipline, and a great way to relieve stress. A lot of people have been kept off drugs and out of gangs because of martial arts. Also, if someone was to use the argument that other gods are involved by other people with martial arts, then you have to argue the same with anything else. The devil twists everything he can that should be pure, sex is twisted by pornography and it is what creates incredible miracles! Musical instruments are used by all kinds of witchdoctors, and yet we can use them to worship Jesus. Anything is redeemable.

Well Ryan It sure is great exercise, discipline and it is hard work Nothing worng with that

On a lighter note, I did Pro Wrestling I broke my foot and got whiplash both from doing "Staged" moves in a wrestling ring. yes it is "Staged" (fake) but the injuries were real.
Just make sure the Gym/Dojo Instructor you use is safe and responsible.

I personaly believe martial arts are ok...Im currently thinking about studying martial arts for the sport(not to actually beat somebody up) theres nothing wrong with it as long as u dont put it before God because then it becomes a sin(idol worship) martial arts is a good way to express your self physicaly and keep your self in tick tock shape :)

I would hope that your girlfriend's mom was opposed to those kinds of shows because of the immoral implications of the programs. The excessive violence and the degredation of women far outshines any martial arts inclusion.

That being said...

There is a spiritual aspect of martial arts, but as long as you can take the good stuff without taking the spiritual stuff.

This can be done with yoga, as well - taking the physical concepts, but excluding the spiritual ritual.

If highly recommend martial arts to anyone who's thinking about getting into it. There's no age that's "too old" either. Martial Arts like karate will get you into good shape, give you good flexibility, good mental awareness and dicipline, and the confidence that if something should ever happen where you have to use it you know that you can take care of yourself. At first you might think that there's no way you are going to be able to get this but you will be surprised how quickly you learn and catch on and how quickly your abilities increase. The kicks in karate will be hard at first but you will get them in time.
