ok, this is going to be odd sounding but I have been debating this for awhile. I am curious to know what others think. What makes a cuss word bad, by God's standards. For example "poop". That is an ok word, and saying aw poop is not going to upset anyone, but sh**, on the other hand is bad. But it means poop, yes? So why would God care if we said poop, or any word meaning poop. I would think (you will have to pardon me, I don't know how to put these words so you will understand their meaning) D**n is something that only God can do and to say "D**n you" you are saying "take all your salvation away and be seperated from God" now to me I would think that would upset God more then "aw sh**" the "F" word on the other hand has to do with a very unseemly type of fornication, so it makes sense to me that you shouldn't say that word. So does God care about the words we say, if their meanings are harmless, just because Society deemed them dirty? "Go to h**l" seems much worse that "I have to P*ss" That just means I have to go to the bathroom. Also many of these words are meant as "aw nuts" or "darn", so does the meaning you imply into the word change the acceptability of the word to God? Does this at all make sense, I am sorry I wasn't quite sure how to ask this.

EPH 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

"four-letter words" were created by man. I doubt many of the words we use today in crass conversations were used during Biblical times; however, the Bible speaks of taming the tongue. These means we are to control our manner of speaking so that our words will not hurt or offend others around us. I don't think it's so much the words in and of themselves, it's the manner in which you use them. Typically when we swear it's out of anger or in the process of making a crude comment or remark. Always bear in mind, would you use these phrases or words during a conversation with Jesus? Would you pray using cuss words?

The biggest reason Christians should censor their language is because the Bible says we are to be set apart from the world. If we have mouths like sailors then lost people will not be able to see our Christian witness.

Language which desparages God is clearly unBiblical and language which harms others without a just reason, doing it to be mean, is also wrong.

Does this at all make sense, I am sorry I wasn't quite sure how to ask this. Before I was saved every other word was a cuss word. Those words usually were an expression of my anger or an expression of my anger toward others or of frustration. Sometimes I would try and keep quiet, but as soon as I opened my mouth when I was angry a cuss word flew out. Immediately it fuled my anger, and became an even more hostile situation. Does everybody have this problem? No..I had to cut them out after I was saved because they did not help me to grow in Christ. Am I offended when others use them? Sometimes, just depends. The Lord's name in vain though alway offends me now that I have been saved.

Very rarely the "s" word will come out. Now it comes out only in frustration, but not at the expense of others. Since I had a particular problem with words like these that caused me to stumble I feel convicted by them. I feel the need to ask forgiveness and repent.

Cuss words should be avoided simply because God calls us to purity. It doesn't matter if society made up the 'cuss' words,or that they weren't around in Biblical times, because they were created to be used in profane, foul ways. That is not the ways of Christian brothers and sisters.

God bless you.

IMHO I think what should really be looked at are the meanings behind the words. That's what should be avoided.

Alot of people have replaced "known" cuss words with softer ones like fudge, darn it, dang, shoot. But does this make it any better?

While it's the actual word itself that world deems " un-acceptable" its the meaning behind the word that is truely the problem.

What would have happened if the meaning for love and the f-bomb were switched?

Of course it is alot easier to say "darn it" then it is to say " Wow I really wish i didn't just run over my foot with a lawnmower" :)

It took me a long time to purge foul language out of my vocabulary. I was proud when I finally had victory over it. So proud that I am afraid that pride was more of a problem than the language.

When I began driving truck over the road, I was appalled at the language other drivers used. It took me about 3 years, but it one day dawned on me that some 4 letter words had snuck back into my vocab unnoticed! You become like your surroundings and when you are surrounded by it 7 days a week, your senses become dulled to it.
I have worked hard to clean it up and I have to be honest, when I am around truckers, it is still a struggle. I am involved with missions, I play in a worship band, I preach and am a published Christian writer, but it is still sometimes a struggle.

Having traveled extensively, I have found that what it a cardinal sin in one region of the world is not even considered a sin somewhere else. It is relative to to local culture.

My feeling is that only God has the right and ability to **** anything. If we know that He damns something, then I suppose it should be ok to declare that he has ****** it. But, to **** anything else is in a sense showing abject disregard for that which He has created and is therefore not glorifying to Him.

Of course, only we in the West get caught up with such seemingly insignificant drivel because when you travel abroad and get a glimpse of some of the horrible sin that is holding entire nations in bondage, things like this just don't any longer hold the seriousness that we place on them.

Nevertheless, although our salvation is not contingent
on our ability to not cuss, it certainly makes a much nicer world when we don't have to listen to it.

You know what troubles me? That it has become perfectly acceptable to use God's name in vain on TV and radio, but it is still wrong to say things like the s or f words, although I hear that that is about to change, as well.

Let no corrupt word proceed from your mouth, but only what is good for edification, that it may give grace to them that hear.

there is a reason to why god tells you to tame your tongue. the words that you say can offend people whether they are cuss words or not. there is power behind that tongue. god hates to see you make things harder for yourself in this life. and not learning to control your tongue can get you into some real pickles. now one thing that he doesn't like is taking his name in vain. he is pretty strict about that ....i mean it's only in the ten commandments. so basically, you can say all the "cuss" words you want.... just be careful what context you put them in.... cause they might come back and bite you in the a**.
