What's the significance of Jesus being the "Son of David"? This is probably a total newbie question... but hey... that's what I am! I'm guessing there was a prophecy in the old testament about the Messiah being in the lineage of David??? But... I'm also kind of confused... I mean.... Jesus wasn't ACTUALLY Joseph's son. Mary was a virgin and therefore Jesus had no earthly father, and (what appears to be) no claim to lineage except for Mary's. Just some explanations would be great. Thanks! :D

Wow your right on the ball ! Jesus the Son of David is to do with the royal blood line of David being passed down through the generations -Satan tried to currupt the blood line which would then stop the prophesy of Jesus coming ( Making God a liar ) . The virgin birth overcame the issue of inpure blood linage as Mary was pure in her genes. Part of the prophecy that isnt fulfilled is that Jesus will sit on Davids throne as King of Kings.

Id have to find the verses but yeah In case i didnt explain it Mary's linage extends from Davids and was pure which meant she could be used by God & fulfill prophesy

Both Mary and Joseph were of the line of David, so Jesus was "the Son of David" physically, through Mary, and also legally, through Joseph, who the Jews considered His father.

The details of ancient Judaic marriage practices and geneology are such that Jesus was legally the son of Joseph, and Joseph was a descendant of David through both Solomon and Nathan (as discussed in the geneaologies of Matthew and Luke).

If you're interested in the details, it was discussed very well by Eusebius in his History of the Church (written in the 4th Century). Here's a link to a copy of the text, I haven't read the target closely but it seems to agree with the hard copy I have: http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf201.iii.vi.vii.html

This is an an excellent question but the answer is quite lengthy actually - but in summation the answer would be this:

The lineage listed in Matthew is the legal lineage and the lineage listed in Luke is the physical lineage.

However if you wish to explore this much deeper you will find a very good and indepth study on this here called " Deuling Genealogies" : http://www.direct.ca/trinity/duel.html

Its well worth reading and will adress any new questions you have on this issue. God bless !

A good comparison would be an adopted child. He'd have the lineage of his "natural birth parents" as well as his adoptive parents.
