I like this little drash by Rabbi Plishkin....simple, to the point, and
very important to remember.

Parsha Mattos

based on Growth Through Torah by Rabbi Zelig Pliskin

The Torah states,

"And Novach went and captured Kenas and its surrounding villages and he called it Novach after his name" (Numbers 32:42).

Why did the Almighty include this verse in the Torah?

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch elucidates: Throughout the world powerful leaders have wanted to leave monuments to themselves through statues and buildings named after them. Kings and conquerors have even named large cities after themselves. However, names can very easily be changed and then nothing is left, as happened to Novach. (Neither Novach or the city he named after himself are remembered to history.) The good deeds of a person and his spiritual attainments are the only true everlasting monuments.

When you view the good that you do as your eternal monument, you will feel greater motivation to accomplish as much as you can. A life of spiritual attainments is everlasting. Feel joy in every positive act you do, for it gives greater splendor to your monument!

This is the very reason why I wonder people are so concerned with the physical aspects of success and achievement... ???

there was this G-d-fearing business man who had lived a good and righteous life while masterfully handling a dynamic global and very successful business all his adult life.....

His time came to leave this mortal coil and an angel came to escort him to Heaven.... but the businessman had one request.... he wanted to bring a briefcase filled with bricks of gold bullion with him. The angel tried to convince him that there was no need and that they would be of no worth to him there.... yet he continued to prevail upon the angel, and after all he was a very skilled and shrewd negotiator, explaining how vital these were and how much of his life had been spent making them, and he wanted to present them to G-d.... so eventually the angel relented....

As this business man approached the Portal to Heaven clutching his briefcase one of the angels attending the Gate stopped the escorting angel and asked what was with the briefcase and why the man had brought it....

The escorting angel replied "So nu? the fellow was just so determined to bring up a load of paving bricks.... I figured 'Why not? It couldn't hurt...'"
