I would like to share with you an example of how the saints intercede for us without us even realizing it or even asking for their help.
A little more than a year ago, (July14th, 2007), I went to confession before attending daily mass. Before mass started, I was seeking the Lord's help in one area of my life, (a particular weakness) where I struggle and despite my best efforts, fall into sin every once in a while. Anyway, mass began and this petition was still heavy on my heart. During the consecration of the mass, (I was up close to the altar), the Lord allowed me to see a vision in the Communion Host of the face of a woman, of whom I didn't recognize. I asked the Lord, "Who is she?", and immediately I received the words, "Kateri Tekakwitha". This name didn't mean anything to me until later during the mass, while looking in the missal I realized that today was her feast day. After mass, I went home and researched her on the internet and even found a litany to her which I printed out and began praying. Later, through prayer, the Lord gave me an understanding that I was to ask for her help whenever I am tempted to sin (in my particular weakness). This I did, and through the help of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha I found myself being strong where I was normally weak.
A year passed and again this past monday, (July 14th, 2008), I was at daily mass on her feast day. I didn't even realize that it was her feast day, untill the priest spoke about her life in a sermon. This past week, I was also on vacation from work, and I began to become a little lazy in my prayer life and spiritual devotions. I had actually started to drift away from the Lord a little bit and I came under strong attack from the devil in the way of temptations. On thursday, I felt a strong desire in my heart to go to the adoration chapel and spend some quiet time with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Soon after I knelt down in the chapel, I saw a vision of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha in the Communion Host. This vision remained for the entire hour that I was in the chapel. Afterwards, I asked the Lord why He gave me a vision of Kateri Tekakwitha at this time, (since it was not her feast day; her feast day was on monday). When I asked this question, Kateri Tekakwitha answered me herself by saying to me, "I came to help".
So, can you see and understand how the saints play an important role in our salvation, and that they are helping us without us even asking for their help.
Of course, we can still ask for their intercession as many of us already do.
