Tit-for-Tat arguing …

(I hope this title passes the “profanity” ban.) ;)

Have you noticed how much of our debating (mine included) is, “Oh, yeah, but you said …” followed by, “Well, you said …,” followed by, “Well, that was no worse than what you said …,” followed inevitably by “Well, SO IS YO’ MOMMA! …” until we are way off topic.

I think if we can just stick to the subject of the OPs, we can avoid a lot of closed threads.

Right?

Yep. We are to focus on the topic at hand without getting side-tracked with personal insults or whatever.

Agree. Moriah finds them difficult to overlook, admittedly, BUT finds it absolutely simple to avoid making any if they do not get made at her first. She suspects this bes the same for MOST (though maybe not ALL) others, too.

So what does that tell us? No first strikes and there won't be a problem. Zero tolerance for First Strikes. First strikes should be stricken and warned by mods SO they learn not to make them, and the problem will be weeded out of the forum by such means.

Nope, I've never noticed it. I have noticed someone say things like "I never said that" then we can post where they actually did, but that's not really what you're saying here. If it's a 'peeing' match, the best thing to do is exit it.

It would make this forum actually useful not to have to read through pages of point scoring and bickering, we might even learn from eachother!

Maybe we should have a voluntary code of conduct?

I have noticed someone say things like "I never said that" then we can post where they actually did,
Sometimes people forget what they have stated. Sometimes they just don't realize how what they have stated sounds like to other ppls reading it. Sometimes the person accusing them has honestly misunderstood their meaning. A LOT of things can cause this discrepancy, innocent things all part of being imperfect individuals each living in his own skin, so to speak. Just because someone says they never said X does not mean they bes lying if we can quote something that seems like they did say it. Yes, in some cases maybe they bes just waffling out of it, but in most cases it will be merely a miscommunication and no cause for trying to "nail" them to the wall over their choice of words. If we treat with one another giving benefit of the doubt, we will find others treating with us the same (hopefully) and doing that bes often enough to put a stop to any ruffled feathers that threaten to break out in bicker fests.

And sometimes people don't seem to really read what the other person wrote.

That seems to be a big part of the problem also, imo.

But what is really bad, s4, is bearing false witness and tossing out misleading accusations about someone by saying they said something in an ancient bygone post and then, when challenged, not bothering to prove it and instead saying stuff like, “Well, I don’t have time to find it but everyone knows it’s true.”

Totally agree with this. That's why I think people who say things like that need to back it up and not chalk it up to a misunderstanding if they are wrong. But I find in Christianity we tend to use a lot of fallacies in our debates, and I'd even go so far to say in our preaching the gospel. The Bible says always be ready to give a defense, but we tend to not feel the need to study to show ourselves approved, and can't give an answer for the hope in us. We then start debating and use the same fallacies. But the flip side is I've seen those debating against Christianity use the same fallacies.

The things posters will stoop to, to make a point. It doesn't matter how rude, or trencherous and low they go, they will do it just to be right and that makes me sure more than ever than I want nothing to do with their GOD!

In fact, some people's tactics remind of the verse of God saying He would spew them out. A verse that some like to use so well...I really didn't know exactly what it was for but since it was used by some folks, I can say all the sudden I think I know what the bad taste is and enough to puke it out myself. tit for tat!
