View Full Version : Where did the notion of Holy Spirit come from?

I'm trying to sort this one out in my mind and would love to hear from all perspectives. (Jewish, Christian, trin, non-trin).
From my perspective, there are two beings, God and Yeshua and they are separate, not one in the same. I don't believe Yeshua IS God. I believe the Holy Spirit is simply the spirit of God and shouldn't have been separated out from Him. It's as if somewhere in the translation there needed to be three gods to make a nice neat trinity, so the Holy Spirit was separated out to make it fit. I know that sounds harsh, and I don't mean for it to. I'm not aruging my position at all, but would like to hear other opinions on this sticky matter.
I guess in brief, who/what is the Holy Spirit?

The most Holy Spirit is the All-Powerful Spirit proceeding from God the Father.
One can read the Nicene Creed as the basis of the orthodox Faith.

God is spirit and is mentioned as such from the beginning of the Bible. Here are some verses:
Gen 1:2 (http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=1&CHAP=1&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Gen 6:3 (http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=1&CHAP=6&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=3) And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Gen 41:38 (http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=1&CHAP=41&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=38) And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
Judg 6:34 (http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=7&CHAP=6&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=34) But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.
Judg 14:6 (http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=7&CHAP=14&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=6) And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him,
1 Sam 11:6 (http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=9&CHAP=11&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=6) And the Spirit of God came upon Saul
2 Sam 23:2 (http://bibledatabase.org/cgi-bin/bib_search/bible.cgi?BIBLE=48&BOOK=10&CHAP=23&SEARCH=jesus king lord&Read=Read&FIRST=OK&HV=2) The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.

Yes, G-d is described in the bible as one spirit or even seven spirits. But there isn't any direct reference to two spirits. However HaShem, Abba, Father G-d and Yeshua share that one spirit, they are, as he said.
I and the Father are one.
