Will I feel anything? How do I do it? Does it have to be out loud?

No, it does not have to be out loud.
Will you feel anything? That's a little harder. Maybe yes, maybe no. But you can allways be sure He hears you.
As for how, getting on your kness and bowing your head is a good place to start. Just open up your heart and speak your mind. Read the Lord's prayer to show a good way to pray. It's not a prayer to say verbatim, but rather a template to show what elements belong in prayer.
Remember, God is our Father. Do not be afraid to address Him as such. Also, He is incredibly worthy of all praise and prayer should contain priase of His awesome worth. Everything you have is from Him so thanksgiving is good too. Then there is the fact that we all sin daily and must confess and ask forgivness in our prayers. Lastly, He promises to withhold no good thing from us, so do not be afraid to ask. Just remember that God will judge what is good for us.

I sat down on my knees and bowed my head. I asked him to give me strength with some of the emotional problems I have gone through and I asked him to give me faith in him and keep me healthy. I felt light headed.

I feel light headed sometimes after prayer as well. And from what you said, I think your prayer was just fine. Sometimes all we can do is ask for strength and faith. Sometimes all we can do is bow our heads and groan. But we have the Holy Spirit in us to intercede and interpret our groans.

It is wonderful that you are praying and seeking to know God more, sweetie.
There aren't any proper words... just talk to Him as you would a friend. It's great to spend specific times in prayer... morning and/or evening works for most people... but prayer can be at any time.
It doesn't have to be formal... a heartfelt "Thank You, Lord" when you see something beautiful, or a desperate "Help, Lord" when things are tough are just as valid, and just as impotatnt.
"What on earth should I do/say now, Lord?" is probably my most used prayer.... many times a day! And sometimes I even listen to the answer...
If you read the psalms, you will find a lot of prayers from many situations, from groans of despair to songs of praise!
God listens, and answers! :)

Communication with God is as essential to our spiritual well being, as breathing is to our physical life. He wants to hear your prayers coming in your own words and coming straight from your very own heart. You need to talk to God as if he were your very best friend, because he is. Your prayers should come from your heart and should be a conversation between you and God. It should be as if your prayers are getting ready to burst out of you and you can hardly wait to talk to God.
He asks us to take any concerns to him in prayer and he will act upon it according to his will. As we deal with difficulties we are to cast our cares on him and receive from him a peace that defies the circumstances. The basis for our hope and faith is the character of God himself. The better we know him, the more apt we are to trust him.

This is a great answer. I would also add, we need to learn how to listen to Him and hear His voice.
I regret to say that I was a Christian 20 years before I recognized how God speaks with me. Admittedly (sp?) it takes practice and persistence, however, if one can learn it earlier on in their Christian journey, their relationship with God will certainly be much more delightful and fruitful. Most importantly, He will be blessed....

I talk to God all the time. It is better than talking to a friend, as sometimes friends don't really listen, but God always listens :D
I know that at first it does seem as if you are talking to yourself, but persevere as one day you will hear Him answer you when you least expect it.
Pour out your heart to Him, hold nothing back. Nothing that you can say will shock Him, believe me He's heard it all before. As long as you are asking for true forgiveness and not just pay Him lip service, you will be forgiven.
I most often pray at night, just before bed. I can't kneel (as I'm not too sure that I would be able to get up again, hehe). I lay on my bed and say the Lord's Prayer very slowly, thinking about each line, not rushing through it. Then I pray for others needs (from many prayers lists or people that I find here that need it), then for the world in general (any news stories that have caught my attention, world leaders, etc), my family and friends come next and then I pray for myself, always last, as others are more in need of prayer than me.
Prayer is a key tool in helping Christians to get closer to God. It is also a very calming experience and by praying silently, you are able to do it wherever and whenever you need to.
I hope this helps? :)

Never forget that although God does not always speak back in words, he can be with you in thought and in spirit. He is there, always listening.
Sometimes I know it by the light gleaming in from the window, sometimes from the clear consciousness found in speaking to Him.

Hello Sarah,
You can be walking, seating down, or even doing a shore, and have your thoughts and words with God. Like everyone else says, just talk to Him, he does listen. Sometimes, I cannot find the right words, but it comes out better through writing them, and to me is like a prayer because I am thanking Him, and praising His Name. Just be consistent, and He will always be with you.
