I awoke this morning with my heart not feeling it's usual glory filled self if you will. I got into my car, turned on my favorite station which is called "The Song" for those who don't live here in Indy. Almost got to work and noticed that I had forgotten my "Purpose Driven Life" book which sunk me down just a tad lower.
I come to this board and almost instantly I am blessed. Everything that I was feeling this morning was gone. Is God not the greatest???
Just wanted to share that. Thank you.
Anyway, I was curious as to how some of you read your Bible? Do you jump from book to book or straight through. I'm trying to find a technique or maybe another form. A gentleman in my Life Group currently is using a technique to where he reads a Chapter or more of the New Testimate then the Old. He says that it's an everyday event that should take a year to complete the Bible. I have forgotten what it's called.
I have 4 kids and am currently trying to find a 30 min slot just so I can spend time with god to just pray. I'm trying to find that meaningful time, and place for just that. Now I'm finding myself wanting to find even more time to read his word to get a better understanding and build a real friendship with God. I have to get into a habit doing this but it's difficult with 2-12 year olds, a 2 year old, and a 3 month old. Any help would be appreciated.
Speaking of the 3 month old, just so you know, my wife had her tubes severed in 3 deifferent places only to STILL get pregnant. We built our home to accomadate the family we had excluding the new miracle. God tells us that he'll never give us anymore than we can handle. We were weary of that considering that our property taxes kicked in which was phenominal BTW, and my wife would have to take so much time off from work. 16 weeks I believe. So we had no idea how we were going to do this.
So like most Christains do in a time of need we prayed. Our Church prayed. In a matter of 3 weeks we were able to refinance our home and started getting various checks in the mail from that refinance that added up to 4 months of house payments.
People God is just incredible and all he wants us to do is love him as much as he loves us. Is that so much to ask? I think not.
Thank you God, thank you for always loving my family and being there for us regardless.
Ok, getting something in my eye.
I sure do talk a lot, sorry.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
While we don't always see this, we often do. This is what you're seeing as I'm sure you know. To God be the glory!

I feel your pain brother. I have two kids and one on the way. I hold down a fulltime job, am training for the ministry, and finishing my degree in theology. So when I read the Bible for devotions (not for school), I jump around alot. Depending on the mood I'm in I'll read something from the Old or something from the New..sometimes both.
You should get that 30 minutes of prayer in with your kids (if you don't pray with them now). It's always a great idea to pray with your wife and kids. In this you demonstrate the will of God to your family, and act as the high priest of the home, so to speak. If you want to get a better understanding and build a real relationship with God I suggest that you get a note book, and as you read the Bible you make notes (sort of your own commentary). If you get to a part that is difficult to understand, make note of it, and study on that passage. Anyway those are some suggestions. All the best to you as you grow in the Lord and lead your family!

What a glorious, encouraging discussion! Wow!
My family and I pray together every day. It is the sweetest time of the day for me. After prayer I lead a short devotion and each of my three children read a passage of scripture that has touched them in some way, followed by my wife. Since we have started doing this sometimes the kids (16, 14 and 10) ask if we can have an extra "devotion time" in the evening! Glory!
I read the Bible for my evening Bible College classes (currently in Genesis), for preparation for sermons and sunday school lessons(currently in the Gospel of John), and for private study (currently in the epistle to the Philippians).
Thanks for the testimony, Glorified. Great post!

I read about a chapter a day. Sometimes two chapters. I started in Acts and read through Revelation...then I started Matthew and am a little more than 1/2 way done with John. When I finish John I will have read the whole NT and will move on to the OT.
I'm planning on starting with the prophets in the OT--I've been interested in learning more about the prophets lately. But I don't know what part of the OT I will move to after that.

He says that it's an everyday event that should take a year to complete the Bible. I have forgotten what it's called. Hey what I am currently doing is taking a chapter of the Bible and disecting it. I started with Romans seven because I enjoy it so much and it leads into my favorite chapter (8). What I do is take it line by line and try to see what Paul was saying, and how does it apply to my theology. More times than not it is helpful in defining what I belive, and it doesn't take long to do.

I got a great site for you that usually takes 15 minutes or so depending on how fast you read. I have the Bible, but it is out of print right now, but you can read it free online. I think you can even download the lessons, everyday to a PDA if you have one of those. It is the Quiet Time Bible Study and can be found here (http://www.gospelcom.net/ivpress/bible/). You can also just go right to todays lesson by clicking here (http://www.gospelcom.net/ivpress/bible/qtb.shtml).

I am reading in chronicalogical order, the dates in which the books were written.
I try to get up early before the kids and drink my tea while I read. If not, the kids are to be quiet while I am reading. Otherwise................CRAZY LUNITIC MOM is what they have to deal with. I started this rountine because I stick with it. I know when I wake up, I want tea, so I just stuck the bible in with it because I know I will always do it!

I read my chapters first thing in the morning too--before my priorities get a chance to be all screwed up. :) I keep my Bible on the table next to my bed and read it before I get out of bed. Of course that's not too difficult for me since I'm single and don't have any kids.
I do have a dog, but she's even learned my routine. She knows she gets a couple of minutes of cuddle/belly scratch time first thing (as I'm waking up), then she gets up by herself and lays down at the end of the bed. When she hears me close my bible and set it on the table, she jumps off the bed and sits at the bedroom door--waiting to be let outside for the day. :D

Glorified,
I'm glad your day is looking up, praise God! I will second (third, fourth?:) ) the recommendation of getting up early to pray. When we read through the Gospels, we see again and again that Jesus got up and went off to pray early in the morning. The fact of the matter is that 11 o'clock at night laying down in bed isn't the greatest prayer posture, you know? Plus, if you do it first thing, everything else doesn't have the chance to get in the way.
