View Full Version : Valuing the Jewish Perspective...

I wanted to comment on how helpful I have found having a Jewish presence on CF. I tend not to write much on here due to work contraints but with observing some of the threads, I just wanted to create this one to acknowledge that. I like to have a full picture on things and value seeing differing views on topics.
There are many questions I personally have when having dialogue (or rather heated debates) with my non Christian better half. :)
I therefore really appreciate my Jewish friends on here who have been able to answer my questions over the years and who have contributed to increasing my understanding of what I read. Whilst I have not met you in person I consider you all as dear friends.
So, I just wanted to say that basically - Talmidah, Chavak, what ever happened to SSV? And everyone else - Big 's
I miss SSV's weekly Torah reading and was wondering whether anyone wanted to take up the mantle and start one here.
Much love and Shalom!

Thank you very much, LotusPetal, this means a lot to me.
SSV has been gone for a little over a year and a half. He wanted to devote his time to real life stuff. And yes, I also miss him a lot!
Thanks again for the very kind words and for taking the time to write them out here. What a blessing your post was to me today, a difficult day, while my heart is so heavy due to the terrorist attack in Jerusalem. Things like that really tend to put things in perspective. Thank you for brightening my day!

Hi, good to see you here! And thank you for your kind words.
I also really miss SSV; but he had only so much time in his life
and the forums just did not fit in with his schedule.
We have a new poster here- Kivi- who I would say is on a par
with SSV (that's high praise, Kivi!).

Indeed, sis. After I'd sent the post I saw the events on the evening news - and it made my heart sink. There are too many people out there who harbour a deep routed hatred for both Jews and Christians and this latest attack accentuated that. :(

 So many of you have said such kind words about me, I am truly blessed to have found such a set of good friends and kind people, both Jew and gentile.
If you want to start a weekly parsha study, then lets go for it. Rosh Chodesh Tammuz started tonite. The 3 Weeks start on July 19th. Just thinkin' out loud. It takes me about a week to prepare a Parsha. How about July 11th, Balak? I love Balak, my type of guy.:P I can post on Wednesday of each week giving us 3 days to discuss> Other suggestions, input, guidance, alternatives???? A show of hands?!?:)

I would vote down on this. If you want to provide a parasha discussion (and I'm all for that!!), you know where there's a Jewish community and a Torah discussion section already in place!! Bring it there, man! We thirst for the Torah!!! Give us to drink already!

Actually, it can be discussed here and transferred there...
I think Kivi is more interested in doing it here to include
more gentiles.
At least, that's what I think I understand him to say..
please correct me if I'm wrong, which is usually the case :)

Hi guys. TO be honest, I'm already part of 2 all-Jewish study groups. I am here at CF for very different reasons. So, if I do a Parsh study, it would take into account the potential users here, both oservant and non-observant Jews and gentiles of whatever flavor of Christianity. That would be the challenge, creating something that could cover such a wide range of potential users. One of the things about which I am the most sad and angry is the false information that the Christian texts and leaders teach their followers about Judaism and the Jews. For the everyday Christians, this a huge dis-service on the part of Christianity to its members. Judaism and Jews are constantly used as 'comparison and contrast' points of reference, yet when Christianity does that, they lie about us. They use a false description of who we are, what we do and what Judaism is. They create a 'staw man' to knock down, over and over. If we can change that, by supplying the truth, we will, no matter how small, make a difference. That is what I am always about.

I'd personally prefer it if you teach it how it is and don't diversify/change it to match your potential audience. I think SSV use to just post it as though he was in a synagogue, but what I gained from it - as a gentile - was a deeper insight into the Tanakh (something I would never get in my local church).
The best people to teach about the Tanakh are those who have studied it all their lives and who are familiar with the Biblical Hebrew, imo. :)
