View Full Version : Using biblical phrases.........

I'm not sure how to phrase this post......but here goes.
When people use key and recognizable biblical phrases (like I'm dusting my feet off and leaving this thread), what's the purpose of that do you think?
Do you think they feel more spiritual or they've made some sort of huge point about how much above you they are in their knowledge of God.........
Pretty much an open topic about using biblical phrases.......and examples of said phrases you've seen used here.
Personally, I find it really annoying.

I hear ya. You'll note that Jesus didn't say to stand up in the middle of town square and announce "I'M DUSTING MY FEET OFF AND LEAVING!" He simply said if they don't receive you, leave the town and shake the dust off your feet.
But I think a lot of people need the assurance from others, and so they make a spectacle of "shaking off their feet" to make themselves appear more spiritual/scriptural/holy than others.

I don't agree with this thread! I'm off! {shake}{shake}!!!
Silly isn't it! I agree that it's probably to make themselves feel superior!!! Sad really!

What gets me is when people write a post like it's the next epistle of Paul. Generally you see these types of posts with newbies to the site.

Is it really any better to be sitting around talking about these others as if they are a bunch of fools...leaving the impression that you are somehow better, or even more righteous, than they by NOT doing these things?

To use the scriptures to prove the point or NOT to use the scriptures to prove the point. Such teaching is in radical contradiction to the letter as well as the spirit of the Holy Scriptures. Every Christians who are spiritually well educated know where they stand on such matters as the inspiration of the Scriptures, the deity of Jesus Christ, salvation through the blood of atonement, death and judgment, heaven and hell. The true battle line is elsewhere outside Jesus Christ, the Church and the Bible which are taught by man's doctrines.

Oh, come on, Siege. Charityagape raises a good point.
And anyhow, aren’t you doing the very thing you are accusing her of?

Personally, I find it really annoying.
Mostly it is just a rationalization they use to justify what they are doing.
People make up games for themselves. They play the part of the rejected prophet because they feel it will condemn those who refuse to obey them. They are using these verses and many like them to manipulate others. They may even think they are hurting others by invoking these phrases.
These boards are sometimes like a case study in PHY 101. It is really amazing to see the roles being played out. It is like a script.
I have an ongoing thread called "games people play" that has dozens of such "cards" that people use in an attempt to manipulate and control others, or even hurt others.
I wish I could find it. There are a couple new cards I need to add.
Maybe it got deleted.

Shaking the dust off is the one I hear most, I'm trying to think of some others I've heard.
The one I hear the most is the "wisdom of men" phrase. They are implying that everything YOU say is human wisdom while everything they say is purely of God. Most of these phrases can be used by anyone. It is the poor mans debating trump card. The first one out of the gate to invoke "dust your feet" or "man's wisdom" can claim to be winner.
The funniiest one is the "do not judge me for judging you" card. They throw stone after stone at you and the instant you respond in kind, it is YOU who are the judge. I got hit by a "two wrongs do not make a right" today. It is ok for them to throw the book at you, but if you dare even suggest that maybe they should not throw those stones then your are in for a screaming fit about you judging THEM(???)
Go figure.
It is all mind games. Most of these games are played out, won, and lost in their own minds. Really funny.

I'd say it depends on the context. I use key Biblical phrases a lot but not because I'm trying to sound holier than thou. It's because I'm alluding to those phrases on purpose to intentionally draw people's attention to them. By using the phrase, I incorporate by reference the entire passage. At least, that's usually my intent.
When I do that, I'm actually assuming that the people reading it will catch the reference. So...it's not holier than thou to assume your audience knows as much as you do. Is it?
Also, I'm a bit classic lit fan... and many good classics are strewn with Biblical allusions. I love that.
I certainly have seen people use it in a way that comes across as holier than thou, though. But then, with some people, everything they say comes across that way, whether it's a Biblical phrase or not.
Of course, for all I know, people are reading this and saying "yep, you come across as holier than thou all the time." All I can say is I don't mean to.

I like literature references.........just the ones that do seem "holier than though" I recognize the reference......but it doesn't really fit in the conversation. It just appears to be used solely for the purpose of explaining why they will no longer be discussing this subject with the likes of you or something equally as lame.
Also, its a good point that its very difficult to ascertain the intent of a post without any of the usual cues (like tone of voice, facial features, and body posture) you have in a face to face conversation. So often I or anybody can get the wrong idea from the words on the screen............BUT SOMETIMES it's just so obvious what the "tone" is even without visual and audio cues.

Actually....after I wrote this earlier I thought I should have noted that this was not directed at the OP. I agree with you about the OP...it was the ensuing conversation that I was asking about.
And no...I'm not...I didn't talk about "those people" as if they were morons...I simply asked a question: "Is it any better to talk about 'those people' with this tone than....?"
