Ever since I've been old enough to understand the concept that God is omniscient, I've always felt that prayer was unnessesary, considering that God would naturally have to know everything that we wanted to tell him before we actually said it.
Consequently, I rarely pray directly to God.
Am I wrong about that? It seems pointless to me.

It is giving thanks to Him in whose hands are all of life. When we truly enter into prayer we are never closer to Him than at that time. The purpose of prayer isn't to inform Him of our needs but to speak with Him and commune with Him. Though he has made certain and precious promises He still will be inquired of to perform it. Ezek. 36:36,37

So, is there a point in asking for things through prayer? Seeing as God already knows that we want/need the things that we may ask for?

Certainly there is. By prayer we bring our hearts desires to Him who is able to give us more than we can ask or think. We do not inform Him but we do come to the place that we begin to see what it is we truly desire. God already knows what is in our hearts but we often don't. We never change God's mind by prayer nor do we ever get Him to do anything that He didn't intend to do already. What we do is open ourselves to Him in worship and trust that He will do what is best. That accomplishes many thing in us. It strengthens our faith in Him, it causes us to trust more in Him and it draws us closer to Him. The more you learn to pray the more you are drawn to Him and the less you ask of things for yourself. The more of God's grace you experience through prayer the less you are concerned about yourself. He and others become what you really think of. Study the prayers of the Apostles written in the Scriptures. They never asked that they be delivered from hardship or toil but that others might know Him who is life and grow in Him. Paul did once ask for prayer that an open door be given him for the preaching of the Gospel but it wasn't for his sake.
