By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept when we remembered Zion. There, upon the willows we hung our harps. For there our captors demanded of us songs, and those who scorned us, saying, “Sing to us of the songs of Zion.” How can we sing the song of the L-rd on in a strange land? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its dexterity. Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I will not remember you, if I do not prefer Jerusalem to my greatest joy!

I remember being so drawn to this psalm when I was a 18, I had to memorize it. There will always be something about Jerusalem that will call to me.

Now I find it is the Birkat Hamazon, the Grace after Meals, said during the week.

So Lulav, what was it about this that inspired you to open a thread on this?

Just a few comments on what Lulav wrote.
First off it is very hard to "sing the L~rd's song" in a foreign land. I love it in Israel during Shabbat. Everything closes down and I can rest. In Jerusalem - no city noises, very few cars. It is such a blessing. Here when my DH and I leave the shalom of our shul and head home, it's almost a culture shock for a moment to remember that most of our city is in breakneck speed.
Second - I love the song "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav". The last line is - "Jerusalem if I forget thee may my right hand it's cunning lose."

Psalm 13

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 How long, O LORD ? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and every day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
4 my enemy will say, "I have overcome him,"
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the LORD,
for he has been good to me.
