Week of May 19th, 2008

Here is the current task list.

These are what the tech team and programmer are working to get done first before moving onto any other tasks:

Privacy settings for profiles
Correcting the moderated post glitch
When things are completed or new things are added, I will continue to update this list.

Thank you for your time and patience with the new upgrade! The staff here at Christian forums really does appreciated your continued dedication to this site.

~Redstiletto

For discussion and to give positive feedback to our tech team and our new programmer, please join me HERE (http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?p=47054741#post47054741)

ALSO THE ASK A CHAPLAIN FORUMS (http://christianforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=792) ARE NOW OPEN!!!

The Report post Feature is now up!!
The http://img.christianforums.com/style/buttons/report.gif (http://christianforums.com/report.php?p=47054741) at the top of every post is the new report button, replacing the big button at the bottom of the posts that we used to have!

Feel free to leave positive feedback for the tech team and the programmer in this thread.

Thanks!

You guys are doing a great job.
Will any new stuff be added to the armoury?
The one thing I would like to happen is know when my reps are getting over and give something more to my friends other than the regular hugs!!!!
On one of the days there was a thank you button with a pink heart.....I thought that was cool....

theres something that needs to be fixed that should be as simple as resetting some setting...

i went to donate blessings to someone and got a message saying i have donated to this person too often and try again at another time!

The Blessings Exchange will suffer greatly and lose the rest of our members if this doesnt get changed ASAP!

We give blessings to the same people OFTEN because of all the GAMES...a setting only letting us give blessings to people so many times per so many days or whatever the set-up is...IS NOT GOOD! It can't work...we may as well shut down the whole Blessings Exchange if this doesnt get fixed like ASAP...(we've already lost tons of people...sigh) PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

Make someone aware of this setting and have it changed if you can..they probably dont even realize its set-up that way..its probably a standard setting..that really needs to get changed ASAP....

thanks so much

Red m = mod
purple m = mod with at least 6 months experience
yellow s = supervisor

Since I do not know the technical names for all the different changes, could you, would you please give me an idea when my computerscreen will be big enough to hold the entire messages? in width, as well as lenght. I spend much time in scrolling to the left, then to the right. I am not complaining, dear Redstiletto, I would just like to know, will it be soon, or at the very end of the Upgrade? Thank you and sincere greetings. Emmy, ( sister in Christ.)

I don't have this problem on any of my 6 computers (2 work desktops, 1 home desktop, 3 home laptops). This includes 4 different operating systems (windows vista 63 bit, vista 32 bit, xp sp 2, and windows 2000) and several different displays (15", 17"x2, 19", 24", 42") and many many different resolutions (minimum 800x600, max 1080p output to the 42"). Some of the computers are brand new, some are several years old.

On none of these systems do I experience a scrolling problem with the CF interface

A lot of people are, though. It's been an ongoing issue since the CF2 upgrade.

I've asked before but didn't get a response. Could you please post the changes as a new post in the thread in addition to updating the OP? It's a pain when you're on post #50 and have to go back to the OP on page one to see what the changes are.

Plus, when just the OP is updated instead of a new post being added, there is no notification to those subscribed to the thread that there is something new to see here.

Looking at a post in another thread, sounds like there were some DNS issues.

I haven't been around much due to the DNS problems. Let me catch up on things and I'll try to answer questions. I think the thread that RedStiletto has going may somewhat take the place of this one, since she knows the schedule of planned changes/additions.

Which as of today is MORE than a week and there are only TWO items on the list being worked on :confused::confused:

Can we get an explanation by someone who *KNOWS* WHY it's taking this long??? At this rate it will be literally years before we are back to where we were before the *change* ??? I think the powers that be are asking too much of our patience :sigh:

At the very least we ought to get an explanation (see above) and a promise for all Site Supporters that benefits will be extended for at least the same length of time that the *features* offered as incentives are not functional.

Please tell us what is going on and what is being done to get things moving faster than it appears they currently are?

I can only update you as I know what is being updated.

I do know that they are working on some staff features that need to get up and running, such as ebans, reports and stuff in that nature.

Once I talk to the tech today I will update you again.

i am sorry that you feel I am failing in communication, but right now the tech team is working on lots of little fixes that is would be ridiculious to sit and name them all when they are all background fixes that no one notices.

There are roughly 3-5 items rolling off the list every day, not 2 a week. However, for the most part they are transparent to our members, at least initially. Issues such as trashed thread pruning, xml downloads, and eban softdelete and indexing are for the most part transparent to our members... but are critical on the back end. We know this has to be balanced with visible progress to the membership, thus we are trying to hit a couple visible items a week. The back end work by far is the most time consuming, and as it gets completed, the front end work will scroll off at a much faster rate.

Actually, were putting more priority on the backend, as a few issues cropped up which needed to be addressed. Thus these is not so much to communicate, but if anything we're beyond the initial learning curve, and things are really flying.

I don't know his age (I doubt he is a teenager), but tech wise, in comparison to many of the coders on vb.org, I'd say he is in the top 5%. There are many hacker types, and others who talk up a good game, and then create unmaintainable and/or very inefficient code, and/or can't hit a target date worth a hoot. What I've seen so far, I've been very impressed with. We're in good hands.

This is precisely the kind of communication that is helpful. Even some of the back end progress is worth communicating. It shows something is happening.

Having been on and off staff I realize how silent it can get on this side when behind the curtain you can see progress.

Communicate with the non staffer in view. And then err on the side of more communication, not less.

my 2 cents

Thanks for the reply, Ron.

The major items being worked on are very complex and have taken some logging to get all the required information in order to work on them further. While we plan, or collect info for these large items, several small items are fixed throughout the day. I am in constant communication with the staff here - either asking for more details on how something should work, or asking for help testing.

Is it true that Sir Adrian is a teenager? Just curious, if that's true, how much lack of experience is figuring in to the delays.I am 20, and easily one of the most experienced vB. specialists around (if not the most). The "delay", as you call it, is just due to the enourmous volume of tasks on the list. If you are only watching 2 tasks, and I have 300 to do, you won't see that I complete 30 unless they are part of that 2 you are watching.

Trust me - things are progressing quickly, and unfortunately, we have been doing a lot of backtracking fixing things that should have been done properly the first time around.

Thanks mnp.

I think it would be valuable and appreciated for the members to know that back-end issues are being worked on. Anything is preferable to complete and utter silence.

We're not mobs of angry users marching through the forums with our metaphorical torches, you know? We're reasonable people. We can accept that critical, back-end, transparent issues need to be handled first -- if we know about it. If we don't, then it just looks like a bunch of SSDD to us.

Site Supporter Perks

delay between posts
delay between PMs
no bank
no pets
no identity on reps over last 20
reminders that we are second priority behind other fixes
enough tech support to try to fix one or two of our things per week or so
Advisors have to ask site members what the perks are because the list was lost (this is asked long after the list was lost)

However, PAY PAL works great to take our money to renew as Site Supporters.

this (http://christianforums.com/showpost.php?p=47285877&postcount=40) is in a closed thread

In the transition between techs, the documentation on SS features was lost, thus it needs to be reverse engineered. Please post any of the perks you can remember (http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7245321) as well as any details. The priority is the backend, not members features, not SS features, but the internals to keep the site stable. It is the foundation, and it needs to be solid. Once that is done, we will be rolling out the other features, albeit we do try to fit in a couple visible features every week or so.

I asked this elsewhere, but maybe it belongs here, if this has been asked, please excuse me, but I need to know something if you will. Is there anything else besides the CF dollies for us to spend our blessings on? I miss my pet rock, Rocco. I used to spend it on him, and now in order to spend it on a dolly, you have to give up your avatar, and I'm not willing to do that, so I forgo my character that I used to have (I have no more character! hehehe...a little funny, but not really :( ) Anywho...what can we spend our blessings on now? If nothing comes to mind...will we be able to spend our blessings on something in the future?

Just wondering what's going on lately. Sure miss the way it used to be. Thanks.

So as much as I would love to say everything in the garden is rosie it really isn't by a lot of us. So my questions still stands, when is it coming back if at all......... so can you please answer me over this, I have posted this question it the site supporters forum but never get an answer, love and god bless you all that work on here but please please can we have this back asap..............

That chatbox will be back, but it is not one of the main priorities right now.

Sr staff wants the chat box back in a huge way, as it allows us to auto archive behind the scenes and is a huge time saver. On the other hand, we have jobs, the bank, and pets scheduled ahead of it.

Jobs are about ready to roll, just need the graphics redone, and the bank is not far off. Pets are next, and then the chatbox. Thus in the interim, we're rolling out an interim CB to get things rolling again.

Thanks mnphysicist, at last an answer just one more thing any idea how long the other things are going to take, as I to have a pet and would love to have her back, so when will the chat box be here as there are loads of people leaving or just not coming here because its not here anymore and so when they ask me I can give them so info and hope to thanks again.

The interim chat box will be up soon.... hopefully tomorrow, could even be this evening. (we are currently debugging it in staff only mode)

The jobs are just waiting for the graphics, and descriptions for the 3 newest positions. You can sort of see whats going on at http://christianforums.com/jobs.php

The bank is still buggey... once we get that resolved, Pets is next.

We will revist the chatbox once we have the above tasks squared up.

I'm curious about the time it has been taking to fix bugs and implement standard vbb features.

I thought the whole point of this upgrade was how much easier it was going to be to maintain code, and that so many of the previously jury-rigged features were standard and required nothing more complicated than turning on a switch.

Since that very obviously appears not to be the case, considering the time, effort, and man-power it is taking to do these things, I am really wondering what the point of this upgrade was. And I'm not being snotty, I really do think this is a legitimate question.

Well, we switched developers mid stream, and a ton of info did not make it from the old to the new developer.... thus, it was like starting over, without the ability to reference the prior version. Something as simple as looking up the old graphics for jobs, had we left the old system up on a separate server would have made this simple.... instead we have to reverse engineer most functions. Thus it is slow going.

Also, many functions were partly installed, but not completed, and there were bugs that came about as a result. Those had to be fixed as well.

There really were 3 reasons for the upgrade.
1. The old version is reached end of life status, and thus was no longer supported. Ie, if had security risks and patches were not available to fix them (initially, the patches just didn't work probably due to conflicts with hacks)
2. Many of the hacks and mods did not scale so well as the site grew, thus we kept running into database crashes. For the most part, much of that, but not all has been repaired.
3. Having a coder get up to speed on all of Erwin's customizations and make direct plug in updates could likely take a year, and yet for security, something needed to be done to address current vulnerabilities.

Thus the upgrade had to occur, but alas, in hindsight, it could have been handled in a much different fashion, but these were the cards we had to work with.

Is there anyplace that we can go to get just the facts about what is going on and not have to sift throught hundreds of "you're doing a great job" and "thanks for the updates"? I know this might sound harsh but I haven't been on for a couple of months and when I came on tonight I felt lost. I'm trying to find out some FAQs but it really is a pain to have to sift through all these comments to get to the facts. If there is not already, perhaps we could have a thread that ONLY infomation could be added to. I don't mean to be rude but my character is gone and I miss her.

Does anybody know if there is any plan to reactivate the "Find all posts by this poster" function?

I miss it so badly - it was a major tool for checking where my buddies are posting and thus getting to know people better by reading things they said other than just the handful of posts I might find by being in the right thread at the right time.

I am struggling to keep in touch with people here, and I can't be the only one that used to depend on this feature.
In fact, I wonder if it's contributed substantially to the threads we've had lately saying this place seems different and people seem to be leaving etc.
Relationships were enhanced by the use of it I'm sure, and it has to be healthy for the board as a whole if we feel we know each other better.

Will we ever get it back? It's been months since the "Upgrade" (I thought upgrade usually meant improvement, not loss!) and I'd have thought this was a relatively simple thing to fix. :o

Ummm... Ty hasn't been rude, he's been truthful. If you have a job in the real world, and your "life" comes up and interferes to the point where you have no time to do your job anymore, you either leave temporarily and get a temp replacement, you leave permanently and someone else takes over, or you get fired, those are really the only three options, no company is going to keep you around "just to be nice".

I view CF like a business considering we're purchasing it as site supporters, or at least I am, so money is going in and for that money I expect a service.

The service however is ridiculously and fundamentally flawed on numerous levels for the last... half a year or more in the more severe sense, and frankly has never been the same since Erwin left (sorry LeeD, it's not a pot-shot, it's just the truth... the site may not have been perfect code-wise with Erwin, but we darn well had all the updates in the world as to what was happening)

Anyway, if the "employees" of this business (on a volunteer basis or not really makes no difference, if you volunteer at the animal hospital and leave the animals to starve I'm pretty sure you're gonna get let go) don't have time (or whatever other reason) to do the job... it's time for replacements.

I'm very sorry things in your life have come to pass with your job here on CF, but simply turn the job over to someone who DOES have the time at the very least, that is the responsible choice.

I for one fully support Ty's statement.

AGREED. Thank you finally for someone saying this.

Thanks for the support...

God Bless,

Ty

I have not been given any updates, the people I get the updates from are not online, so once i get updates I will post them.

Okay...

So you don't get updates on a regular schedule?

Can I suggest that you have the people responsible for giving you updates automatically do so once a week...;)

What I don't get is this task if done wisely should not take more than 10 minutes a week... a half hour if you're not good with computers...

I think it reasonable to expect at least that... again don't you?

Someone needs to be given the task of reviewing this thread or a similar one set up for the purpose of answering questions about features, especially as new ones come online... don't you think?

ROFL
I know! I mean why should be complain when we've been given toys and distractions to play with?! Forget all the problems! Its like a kid being told to sit down and shut up.

I mean god, we're not that dumb to be fooled by this mod people. Seriously. Its kinda insulting that moods, pets and a stupid t-shirt contest is going to quiet us down. I guess Lee has a mighty low opinion of us members.

Well really it isn't a matter of complaining. This thread is here to post updates and since that is the case it needs to be followed through with.

An organization takes its cues from the leadership and to be perfectly frank the leadership of CF, specifically LeeD, does not communicate downward, at least not to the point where anyone below a blue A (99.9% of the membership) sees it. I have no idea how much communication is going on between LeeD and the advisers but it is apparent, at least to me, that there is a lack of communication with the general membership.

As for the poster who stated this is harsh and there are other things besides the internet, yes there are but that has nothing to do with anything. The purpose of this thread is for updates, it is not unreasonable to expect them on a regular basis.

Ty,

I think your comments here to Redstilletto are unkind, hurtful and disrespectful. There is no excuse for not accepting another person's apology. There is no excuse for not trying to understand that some times real life happens...even to those of us who volunteer.

And fyi... there hasn't been any updates to announce. You and I are members here. We do not own the place, we do not have the right to tell others how many times they should post updates or make announcements. This is something that is done because CF does care about us members. But there hasn't been any announcements and if there has been, someone else on staff have announced them. What I don't understand is why you are being unkind and hurtful to a person that you don't even know.

I have a hard time reading these comments that you have made here. I can't believe that you would be this unkind.

This position was created for the sole purpose of informing the members, right? It's not "harsh" or "rude" to then expect that duty to be fulfilled. If real life situations are keeping you offline too much to handle this position, then the next logical step would be for someone else to take on the duty, right?

What's rude about pointing that out? Do we live in a world where, "Hell of a job, Brownie" is our gold standard for performance reviews?

You betcha there's more to life than this forum. That's why the stats are dropping like flies and people are flocking from the place. But when we ARE here, it would be just wonderful to feel like the people running the forums give enough of a hoot to do what they say they are going to do, which is fix the site MONTHS after the upgrade, and keep people INFORMED.

It's no statement on the quality of my real life that I just spent 90 seconds typing out this response. Do the job given you, or pass it on to someone who can.

You know what? I've seriously had enough of a few of you and your behaviors. The whole time you scream about CF management or CF in general being unkind and unChristian you act like this towards people. Take the plank out of your eyes.

We've had upper staff moving, dealing with family with health issues, dealing with their own health issues, and working continually anyway on getting petz and everything else. Could you possibly for one second think about people besides yourselves and wonder if there are things, bad things, going on in their lives and that possibly could contribute to slowness or whatever? What is the matter with you people? You should be ashamed of yourselves. Seriously.

I'm closing this. It's nauseating. Your behavior, and you know who you are, is disgusting. I'll PM some of you with some answers if I have them and we'll re-open this approximately whenever I feel like it. I look forward to the complaints and reports you'll make about this post.
