Surely you're not spending all your time on the 'net.
I just got Velvet Elvis by some dude named Rob Bell, recommended by Uncle Bud (where ya hidin'?), started that one today.
My recreational reading is volume 4 of the Belgariad series by David Eddings (I started reading Lord of the Rings but quit halfway through the first book 'cause I like Eddings better; started with volume 1 and I'll end with the Mallorean series) & The Hess Cross by JS Thayer (fictional reading before bed and when I can't concentrate on nonfiction ;) )
OK, definitely not weighty theological tomes here :D
So what ya got goin'?

Are you enjoying it?
I read my daughter's copy a couple of years ago - wasn't impressed.
IMO - light on theology, another case of someone (in this instance Rob Bell) trying to "market" our Lord, Jesus the Christ
aside from that - I didn't find it particularly well written

I so agree Edb. Look up that contemplative prayer stuff too, all compliments of the emerging church.
New Age repackaged for Christians basically. :sigh:
I'm all for change and Livening up our worship and contemporary teaching, but the stuff Rob Bell & even Rick Warren are peddling are alarming with this new "unity" push with other world religions.
Sign of the times imho.

I've just barely started it so we'll see what we have. It is interesting to read what others think even if there is disagreement. Consider we all have the same Bible and can't come to a complete understanding on everything there. So I'll withhold judgement until done~shouldn't take long...I just finished the fourth volume of the fictional series while I was in the bathtub (yeah don't laugh :P ) so I'll be working with Mr Bell...

Well I'd definitely encourage withholding judgment about something or someone until after you've read it or done some study.

Contemplative prayer has been around a lot longer than the current religion fad compliments of the ancient church...there are even elements of it in purtian writings~however I think the term has been hijacked by some new ageish sorta folks. Contemplative prayer~that is, simply (though maybe it isn't that simple) practicing the presence of God in a prayerful sense as one goes about their day, taking advantage of any moment to pray and stay in a communion with God~is what I strive for; if its just some method of trying to achieve a "higher mystical plane" or try to twist God's arm or to think I'm really spiritual then it's of demons...and anything of it that can't be measured by God's word is again of demons. I view it as acting on :
1Th 5:17 KJV
Pray without ceasing.
And not in some repetitive useless manner but being cognizant of surroundings and a lost world and of God in His Holiness and Grace and of me and my sinfulness and mustard seed..
Contemplative; at least as I read it defined:
contemplative |kənˈtemplətiv|
adjective
expressing or involving prolonged thought : she regarded me with a contemplative eye.
• involving or given to deep silent prayer or religious meditation : contemplative knowledge of God.
noun
a person whose life is devoted primarily to prayer, esp. in a monastery or convent.
Don't let other hijack good words;)

I'm being pleasantly surprised by Velvet Elvis; it makes me think and wonder, and that can be a good thing~he is bringing up some good points; some that I have asked on occasion myself....the historical contexts are interesting if accurate..
I'm about 1/3 of the way through it.
