Hello everybody, sorry for the mess, we're trying to clean right now...

In the last hours, there was a major breakdown in the database. Trying to reconstitute the pieces of data that was updating, the hard-drive that is hosting the database decided it had enough and shut down because it was full... this is why the entire site was down this morning...

Since then, it was complicated to navigate thru the site because i had to deactivate the addons system that was giving more features to the forum... this also was fixed and the actual features remain.

Now, the next days:

For the end of this week, we will have to shut-down the site in various moments of the days because we will make tests and clear the database of the useless elements that are haunting the site for years... So we have to appologize right now for the troubles that may come in the next days.

The server status... some people commented the actual situation to not be different from what it was before the CF2 upgrade, but i have to comment myself on saying that what you had in the past was related to the whole system used to run your forum... too much hacks, too much gadgets coded on the fly, and a hard-drive not happy to deal with all that work to do... so the site was always slow, always breaking down. Right now, it is different... the problems we faced since the upgrade are related to the size of the database only... too big, too fat, we have hard time moving it from one room to the other, it stuck in the door not wide enough... (i hope the image is clear here!)... so in the next days that's what we will act on... making this fat database take a diet and slim down... a lot. for that, we need time, your time, sure, but also the time for us to fix everything once and for all... John is our web-techy, he is very efficient, but need a nap from time to time, so that's why we do not work on this 24/7...

Some words on the upgrade itself, and the loss of a lot of things on the site; basically because it was needed for the security of the site and for the complexity of the work done or to be done, we had to deactivate a lot of additions to the site, and they will be replaced or upgraded in the next days and weeks... but there again, it takes time.

As an example, the Living Avatars... a lot of members complained about the move from "one avatar + one dollie" to "one dollie avatar"... the system is also not the best we could find because of the lack of consistancy in the image manager, but we're going to have it working perfect in no long... The dollies are not gone, they are just in a different Doll House. The change was a difficult decision to make, but for server performances and the flexibility we had, it was a no-choice avenue... Living Avatars or no more dollies... I hope you understand, this is not based on some members requests but to the life of this site... when the dollies were implemented first, they were driven by an engine created for a small community of 50 to 250 members... you are 1000 times bigger... this is complicated to run from the server side, and hard to manage from the browser side also... anyway thanks to Ravenscape and her team for all the efforts to make this cool gadget work nickel!

Another difference is the Blessings engine... everybody complaints about it, and i know it is not giving the results you had in the past. Th blessings are not calculated the same way, each time the server is shut down the system is missing some donations or subscriptions, and the bank is far from being what it is supposed to do... BUT we fixed them all in the background. The engine author John Jakubowski was kind enough to help me fixing the missing pieces, and i will put everything back before the end of the week... at least i do not have to clear 5000 entries of wrong bank credits.. :)

btw, about lost blessings and wrong counts, we try to fix everything, so if you REALLY lost some big amount of blessings since the upgrade, just say so...(PM me!) because we actually have all the blessings in hands and in bank inside the database, so i can hit the counts and verify that you were not fooled. Some guys may have lost some transactions like gifts or donations, and the system tracked them all. but remember that the banks flaw even had you come back to what you had in the upgrade and you may have some millions of blessings lost somewhere if a friend gifted you with this... remember that there is nobody above me for the blessings... i have the biggest count, so if someone say that he had like 5 millions, sorry but it is impossible.

Reps... Oh Reps... fixed in most parts, missing some calculations, but i'm checking all this with Rep Daddy who is devoted to make this fun thing work perfect for all...

Permissions, Privileges... a big piece of what we have faced in troubles for the last 10 days... but this is coming to an end, we're putting the next days to fix the missing links and everybody will have their levels back with their identifications and ranks and everything you can imagine as a dedication ... the reason why it was unfinished in the last days is simple; everybody is lost in translation... the guys who coded this forum software forgot to give us a proper documentation with the new tools and features, and actually the entire staff is trying to learn the whole thing... the upgrade was like moving from a 2 rooms appartment to a 8 rooms country-house... the guys need to learn how to clean the house, how to feed the donkey too...

The Special Features you had in the future are to be replaced or upgraded... the Blogs forum is yet to be merged with the new Blogs system, but seems that you already find some fun with the new one, you populate it a lot, i like it. The Public Groups is also a fun thing, maybe not used at its full potential right now, i'm trying to get some addons to it so you could have your own little forum inside CF.com... yeah yeah, no more need to start a forum outside, you will have your own place here! a lot more features will be added from time to time on CF.com, but we need the site to be fixed from the inside before adding anything big, because the server machine is far from liking me right now...

Site Subscribers are not forgotten... you are acting a great addition to the site by helping financing it... We try hard to bring back your privileges, but i need the teams to help me on that, and for now, they try to understand how the new forum works, so they are not focussing on me... sorry for that, i will try to have some coffee and bring them some food so they can help me helping you! and i have some surprises for all supporters in the next weeks... (like these private forums i just talked about!)...

Regular members, non subscribers, you are not left aside... once the site is up and running properly, you will find new additions and a better brwosing on this site as well... we had hard time fixing a real theme for the site, i hope you all like my two Sky variations (i like that new tagline, don't you?), i'll try to listen to all your grievances/suggestions/complaints in this new era...

So this is, a little resumé of the situation. I'll try to keep you update on all the site activities until everything is fixed... and after, for sure, if you want me to stay !

oh, btw, use the Bug Reports (http://christianforums.com/tracker.php?projectid=1) forum if you face a strange situation...

Yeap, Reps were fixed, unfixed.. i looked at the 50 cap, deactivated it... i suppose that will help, if not, Rep Daddy can help me...

for the Blessings Bug, it seems that something was modified today that i was not aware of... points are growing fast since the shutdown... will take a look, this is monstruous again.
Thanks Nex. Just so you know, the rep system is no longer fixed though, even though it says so in your note.

The rep system -was- fixed.. when the blessings and stars were down. We were actually having a great time in the rep forum, we were giving out our rep power again.. but when everything came back to normal? Nope, no more rep power.. back to 50-points-a-rep.

Just incase you didn't know :)

yeah... hopefully for you, i deactivated the "Multiply Reputation Awards by Reputation Amount" setting... it was reactivated by some strange event occuring during the dropdown this morning.. i will check the old blessings you had this morning and reevaluate your real blessings... hopefully you were not 5000 playing with the reps in the last hours.. lol

Actually we're back to reps being "half fixed".. we have rep power back, which is great, but we have unlimited reps to give haha.
I'd rather keep the rep power and the unlimited part than go back to what we had!! lol :D
actually, the way the Reps are calculated will be negotiated with Rep daddy, in your own forums, because this is not the goal of my announcement, i hope you understand.. lol

but main thing is fixed now--- i hope

[2] rep power was calculated as follows:

1 point for every 1000 posts ... PLUS
1 point for every year (365 days) a member of CF ... PLUS
1 point for every 1000 rep points earned

[3] newbies start with 10 rep points.

I have a question about the SS - would Cf consider extending it for one month for all SS to account for about a month working on the site and loss of SS - the reason i ask is because my SS and several others were gifted - i was gifted the month of april and may - so for many of us untill the site is working properly we wont have been able to utilize it.

Thank you so much for all your hard work

I don't know how much trouble this would be, but I'd like to make a request that the top of the page, where our Last Login Timestamp, and Blessings amount is listed, that the Rep Amount be listed there again like it used to be. Checking my rep number was one of the first things I did when I logged in (to see how many reps I got while I was gone, LOL) and now I have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to see instead of just at a glance at the top. Is that possible?

Reps... Oh Reps... fixed in most parts, missing some calculations, but i'm checking all this with Rep Daddy who is devoted to make this fun thing work perfect for all...

:wave: Thank you for all the hard work, and for the update here and throughout this thread.
God bless

Nex, thank you for the update on how things are going. The new site is looking better all the time. The new skins are great! And I can't wait to see what other surprises are in store as more and more bugs get worked out.

Kudos to everyone who is involved with the upgrade. Thank you for all your hard work. Just don't get completely burned out. Take some time to rest and recharge your batteries. Coffee, donuts, energy drinks... Or if you don't like that stuff, just some toast, eggs, and orange juice. Thank you again for all the hard work.:clap::clap:

the problems we faced since the upgrade are related to the size of the database only... too big, too fat, we have hard time moving it from one room to the other, it stuck in the door not wide enough... (i hope the image is clear here!)... I used to have that problem too! Then I discovered diet and exersize! lol.^_^

.. John is our web-techy, he is very efficient, but need a nap from time to time, so that's why we do not work on this 24/7...Awww....bless him. Hope he gets all the rest he needs. Poor guy, he must be shattered. Well I for one am impressed at all the work that has been done....and sooo quickly!

and actually the entire staff is trying to learn the whole thing... the upgrade was like moving from a 2 rooms appartment to a 8 rooms country-house... the guys need to learn how to clean the house, how to feed the donkey too.....And the C.F halls echo with the sound of praise for the staff who worked so hard. Hey, we got a donkey? lol. Can I have a comfey chair in my room? lol

because the server machine is far from liking me right now...Well...you seem like a fine guy to me! Perhaps the server will warm to you once it has adjusted to it's new surroundings. lol.

so they are not focussing on me... sorry for that, i will try to have some coffee and bring them some food so they can help me helping you!I make a nice cuppa and I got donuts AND chocolate eclairs! Will that keep em focussed?

Yeap, Reps were fixed, unfixed.. i looked at the 50 cap, deactivated it... i suppose that will help, if not, Rep Daddy can help me...

for the Blessings Bug, it seems that something was modified today that i was not aware of... points are growing fast since the shutdown... will take a look, this is monstruous again.Hello there! You may already know but reps are limited to giving only 40 at a time now and you cannot rep a person again once you've repped them. I don't know how it was for regular members, but site supporters could rep anyone as many times as they wanted as long it wasn't the same post. We did have a limited amount of 40 per day though. I miss that a lot. I know we have a ways to go, but thought you may want to know that. :)

I just repped you with Firefox. It was a bit slow but the box came up and worked fine.

Now, it also gave me the option to go as high as 3381 points, not 40 like it had been doing. That's the option I selected, so if it worked properly your rep should have gone up by that amount.

Tag 186598 times.
So this is about 40 Bytes for Each Rep number 40 X 186598 = 7,463,920

Rep Update

Geocajun and I worked on the rep system some this evening trying to set the new software to the old settings.

I thought it would be simple but we hit some snags. The current set up creates a drop down box with a variable amount of reps you can give. For folks with MANY reps this makes it very slow to load. Also there are some quirks.

To rep with IExplorer you right click on the rep icon and then select open link in a new tab. Mozilla FoxFire seems to work a bit better but is also slow.

Another snag is setting the reps per day to 40. That doesn't seem to work. So to avoid rep inflation (like the blessings boom) I am suggesting he set a max rep points given at 3,000,000 per day.

Now for MEGAzillas this is less that you should have, but if the cap is higher and folks are not restricted in the number of times they can rep in a day ... we will have repflation.

Also, he and I have not been able to talk again tonight so I am PMing this to him so he knows what I have communicated. He can post any corrections.

Please be patient, at least we are trying some stuff until the settings can get restored fully. This is a partial step (frustrating yet still a bit of progress).

So, let's see what happens.

I can see why blessings inflation could be a problem, since blessings are a) used to purchase things on CF, and b) an incentive to be a Site Supporter.

But I truly fail to see what the big freaking deal is if there is "repflation". So what? Who cares? They're just points, ways that people can say something positive about another person's post. There really needs to be limits on this?

Okay, I'm confused (NSOA) Is there no way to set it at 40 or they are not sure how to do it and this limit of 3,000,000 per day is a temporary fix until they figure things out. Sorry, there has been so much information and I'm having a hard time sorting everything out.

A limit is a temp fix. The 40 reps per day requires some programming (I think). Geo may be better able to answer this.

For those that cannot rep because your reps are too high ive seen some say they can do it if they right click and open the rep in a different window itself so maybe this will help

Doesn't work for me :sigh:

why does there need to be any cap on how many reps and how much someone can give? if thats there rep power they should be able to use it - currently having a list of all the numbers which we could choose from makes one very long long list; and if we can choose the rep power we give to a person; how soon before we have a lot of upset people

Okay, I'm confused (NSOA) Is there no way to set it at 40 or they are not sure how to do it and this limit of 3,000,000 per day is a temporary fix until they figure things out. Sorry, there has been so much information and I'm having a hard time sorting everything out.

Thanks RD

Spudgrandma

Right now we cannot limit how many times you can give reputation, but rather we can only limit how many reputation points you can give. We have set a limit of 3,000,000 temporarily. If you had a full rep power of 500,000 then you could only give your full rep power 6 times, or half your rep power 12 times, etc .. that is what you are choosing in the drop down menu (which I hope we can get rid of).
We are looking into a way to restore the functionality that was in place before the upgrade.

Setting the reputation limit should be a simple setting:

AdminCP> VBulletin Options>User Reputation Options> 'Daily Reputation Clicks Limit'

This is from the Vbulletin forum. Finding the setting should be a snap.

That isn't how it works though for us. Our plugin seems to be in mid development and we need to pick back up on where it was left off..

currently someone with 10 rep points could rep a few thousand times and rep 3 million points i guess; while someone with 500,000 points would only be allowed to rep 6 times unless they restrict what they share out and even then you have to spread reps around to rep the person you want a second time

I had hoped this could be resolved with a few easy settings but it looks like some programming will be needed. I appreciate Geo doing what he could. I am sure Geo will let the tech staff know the status.

My guess is that removing the drop down box (thus removing the option of selecting the number of points to give with each rep) will be needed.

But Lee has assured me it will get fixed.

Probably as in most project undertakings, they are taking the most important and working their way to the least of them. I'm sure we'll see more changes coming!

Yep - all of the above are on the "To-do" list. Will take a goodish while though. Lotsa patience being asked of you all. ;)

Flaglady,
Will we be able to customize our profiles the way we did our homepage on the old CF? I thought maybe it would be one of the perks of the SS *hoping* :).
I don't know if this coding is the same type as let's say, Yuku's or Ezboards, but I know they have profiles there like this. So, just wondering. :)

Yes. It won't work exactly the way it did at CF1, though. This version of vbulletin doesn't support html code in the profile page. But we will be able to add backgrounds, colors, change fonts, etc.

This is a really helpful thread, but I'm wondering if we could take the link off the front sign-in page? It seems to be the first thing newbies might see, and go to, and become very confused! Everytime I go to log on, I see that link first, and so wanted to ask if anyone else thinks that should be taken off now that it has been a while? If no one else thinks so, I'm ok with that, too. :sorry:
