View Full Version : CF2 Upgrade Q&A
ravenscape
9th May 2008, 05:55 PM
The main announcement thread on the upgrade has gotten long, and people are having trouble finding answers to their questions. So, I'm starting this thread to give folks a place for Q&A ONLY, as well as pulling together some of the useful info in other threads.
Non-Q&A posts will be moved out of this thread, so be forewarned.
The next couple of posts contain useful information, and may answer some of your questions on their own.
The original announcement of the CF2 Upgrade are here (http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7231131):
Members and Staff,
Welcome to CF2.
There are a lot of changes, and it would be unlikely that everything could be covered in a single announcement.
The first thing you'll probably notice is we have a new style. The second being there is a new forum structure. This was done in an attempt at making things a bit easier to navigate. There are a lot of forums on CF, and it can be somewhat intimidating for new members.
Some of the forums are marked as "For Christians." These are forums specifically for Christian fellowship and discussion. Theology (with the exception of Unorthodox Theology), Edification, Ministry, and Teens are currently marked as "For Christians."
The Debate category has also been rearranged. Politics, Ethics/Morality, and Philosophy have been moved to the Society category; Creation vs. Evolution has been moved as a sub-forum of Physical & Life Sciences. General Apologetics and Non-Christian Religion have been moved to the Outreach category.
There will be a new moderation protocol, released shortly. Reports will be closed, but new features installed that allow members to keep track of the status of their reports, as well as mod actions taken against their posts and threads.
There are several new features, some of which are incompatible with old features. The Character items and Pets can be transferred over to the new engine, but everyone is going to have to reacquire their items. For the first month, all pets and characters will be free, so as to allow everyone to rebuild their items.
Chrisbot, unfortunately, was not compatible with the upgrade.
There are a lot of new features, too numerous to go into much depth about them all here. These are a few:
An updated chatbox engine;
"Thank You" notes;
New smilies (in addition to current smileys);
Updated home page profiles;
Extended reputation display;
Photo albums;
Image icons and reorganization of UserCP;
New ranking system (members with the most posts, the most activity, etc);
New pets and character items (in addition to current pets and character items);
Upgraded blogs;
An information portal and site-map (to help with site navigation);
Ability to "tag" a thread, and use thread prefixes;
Drafts (so that you may save a draft post and later return to it).
Some of these are installed already; some will be installed over the next few days. Please report any bugs (in the Report Bugs forum) you come across so the techs have a chance to fix them
If you have questions or need help with something specific, you can contact these staff members and they can help:
Ravenscape and LibertyChic, for questions about the Armory and Character items.
CelticGrace, for questions about the Pets and the new P3TZ engine.
Angeldove97, for questions about the new blogs, photo album, gallery, etc.

This is probably a repetition, but if the characters are up, how do you find them/get yours back? Too many posts to read them all.

I don't think I've seen this discussed before.
What are social groups for? (Other than to have a name of a group that basically lists your interests on your profile page.)
Is there a way to get new messages posted to social group to show up in your UserCP, or be notified of them in some other way?
It seems difficult to keep up with group activity the way it is set up now, especially if you belong to a lot of groups and need to visit each one individually to see if anything new is going on.
Thanks for starting this thread, Raven.

The short answer is that they're for fun, and for people with special interests to find each other on this huge site. I don't think they've been completely configured yet, and I'm not sure if it will be possible to get notification of new posts in a social group thread. I'll try to find out for sure. It would be nice to get a notification. I started a group on one site and forgot all about it. Noticed it 3 weeks later and a bunch of people had joined.

Right now it is. I'd like to see that change, but it's a technical issue with the Living Avatar application. Some people are choosing to put their avatar images in their signature.

Notification about WHAT are the Groups...
basically, the system is actually not complete. remember http://groups.yahoo.com ... when the system will be up, it will be exactly that. Site Subscribers will be able to have their own forum based on their group, they will be identified as is, and the members of these groups will be able to chat privately if needed--- because yes, you may even be able to have your own little forum on CF.com
did i trashed a scoop ?!

If it's going to be like Yahoo Groups, there will be a lot of capabilities. That should be good.

I haven't seen an ETA yet. The blessings bugs were front burner there for a while, though. Hopefully reps are near the top of the "to do" list. I know the ability to neg rep was completely removed last night.

I think each rep increases a person's points by 50 points right now. The best part of rep (IMO) is working, though. I can say thanks for a good post, say hi, offer some support, etc., and tie it to a specific post, without the hassle of going to PM.
The techs will get the point part working soon, but there is a lot on their plates. CF is a work in progress right now, not a finished product.

Given the amount I don't think it would be as bad, or even as easy to abuse.
Given maximum Rep for 1 person is 20 in 24 hours @ 100 per rep, that's only 2,000 Blessings created per account.
But yea I'm wondering if it's a bug or real.

Can the forums be reorganized into a more logical order? It would make sense to have Announcements near the top, ministries grouped together, etc.
Right now on my UserCP (just the forums I am subscribed to, obviously) I have For New Christians at the top, then Announcements, a bunch of Ethics forums, life stages, then Ethics and Morality at the very bottom between Computers and Internet and Pet and Animal Friends. It's not making a lot of sense to me, and would be much easier if there were a logical flow to it.

This is annoying. One of the things I really liked about CF was the ability to see that sort of stuff at a glance. It gave me much more of a sense of talking with a "real" person. Since the much-ballyhooed raison d'etre of CF2 is communicating and socializing, it seems strange to push those features out of easy sight.

Some of them (not all) led to frequent hasty judgements, and often misjudgements of people. This is a small part of the reason for moving them to the profile. The main reason, though, is that the amount of info displayed in our posts had become a huge resource drain. Not having all that info in the profile will improve the speed and performance of the site considerably.

Not always, obviously. My avatar could describe me as a black boy, a white woman, or a white man.
Gender and faith are necessary to be seen at a glance on a forum like this one. It aids tremendously with having the information you need about who you are speaking to, in order to discuss politics, religion, marriage, support, etc.

No news of which I'm aware. I doubt most of the developers are working this weekend, though I could be wrong. I think we have some new styles coming later tonight, though.

I'm probably in the minority here, but if it's an either/or thing, my own preference would be for the gender, faith, and maybe political stuff to be in the posts, and the reps (or whatever they are now), blessings, health to be on the Profile page.

Thank you for starting a question and answer thread, ravenscape.
I just want to say how impressed I am with the way you are communicating, Raven, Nexia, and other staff members as well. I've been vocal about how poor communication has been on these forums, but y'all are really doing a very good job at keeping us updated and trying to get us answers. Thanks for that.That is limited to technical questions. I suspect they won't be enthusiastically answering embarrassing questions, e.g. about policy. In addition, if the discussions where these decisions were made weren't secret, more people could assist answering questions. It is also clear that many people who should have answers to certain questions are absent. Moreover, if I were in charge (for which I don't think I have time) I would have made a Q&A with the answers in the OP, like I did for appeals during the semi-democratic period. There should be enough people with the knowledge to make and update a comprehensive original post for such a thread. The communication looks improvisatory. It seems to depend on individual initiatives. They are putting more effort in it than before, but they failed to develop a communication plan.

Is clicking someone's profile to receive basic information not draining resources ?
Why have faith icons be removed from the post headers ? When debating religion it is useful to know the stance of other participants and if you don't know them you can also misjudge them.
Why do some people have more than one character in an oversized avatar ?
Why are threads not displayed full screen (that is full width) ?
Why have staff titles been removed ?

Who would be enthusiastically answering embarrassing questions? I know of no human being that enthusiastically answers questions that are embarrassing. Do you? :D
In addition, if the discussions where these decisions were made weren't secret, more people could assist answering questions.
How could you possibly know whether or not these decisions were made in secret? How could you possibly know that they weren't discussed with staff prior to the change? As the past generally serves as a good example of what is to come, (it often repeats itself dontchaknow), I think you and I could both attest to the fact that upper level staff will almost always discuss changes, with lower level staff prior to the changes being made. In fact there is plenty of evidence that this has happened. The CF Angels, currently headed by Gwenyfur (who is doing a great job) are helping people understand the changes. Staff are helping people who don't understand something. Everyone is doing their job. So, this seems like a lot of protestation about nothing, imho. Change is always difficult, but let's give things a try before we start griping about how awful it is. So far, I don't see anything too terrible taking place. There are a few mistakes but, they'll be correcting them as we go along.
It is also clear that many people who should have answers to certain questions are absent.
They're not absent. They're fixing things that everyone is complaining about. As for the Super A's, those who have answers are giving them, and to be honest, there's no reason other staff can't respond here too. Relax... give it time. It's just a forum. It'll still be here tomorrow, and if things aren't to your liking, they'll probably change again later. Such is the way of the web. Change is inevitable for growth to continue. Kind of like life eh?
Moreover, if I were in charge (for which I don't think I have time)
Well you're not, so time isn't really a factor is it? Those who are best for the job are at it, and the rest of us can just enjoy the fruits of their labor. :)

All the rest of this is just...... on a need to know basis isn't it? If we need to know, we'll know when it's important for us to know.
Have a nice week now, and try to smile ocassionally. It'll make you feel better, and that's not such a bad thing. :)

I have been told that they are, but there may alternative to having each icon individually in the postbit, yet still display them. We'll see, I guess.
Why do some people have more than one character in an oversized avatar ?
If you equip more than one body, you can have more than one character with Living Avatars. The final product is a single image, so the layering concerns with the old armoury system don't apply
Why are threads not displayed full screen (that is full width) ?The default skin is not a fluid one. There are two fluid skins to choose from. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see a drop-down menu that says "CF2 Renew". Try one of the alternatives. I like "CF2 in the Moody Sky". It's a darker version, and is a lot easier on my eyes.
Why have staff titles been removed ?They havne't been added back, yet. There's is a lot of configuration to complete, and the configuration that affects criticial functionality has highest priority.

There isn't a way at this time. The Living Avatar application will have to be modified by a programmer to make returns available. I'm not sure when we'll get that functionality.

What's going on with Chrisbot? Is he dead, is he working part-time, is he time-warping?
I'm getting email notifications today about PMs and friend requests I received last week, and daily summary notices for forums I'm subscribed to from several days ago. Will he still be with us and functioning properly at some point, or is this a fluke?

Good call on this. Let me second the request. The heirarchy at the bottom of the page was very, very useful.
Here, for example, there should be links at the bottom of the page for:
Announcements > Member Assistance > Member Assistance and Forum Features > Christian Forums
So you don't have to scroll all the way to the top of the page to click up into a forum.

Each user can edit / add 2 tags to a thread.
So example this thread has the tags
blessings, blogs, characters, icons, mo love fo raven!, profiles, q&a, reps, upgrade
If you click on them, you will then find other threads that have the same tag.
So lets say there's a tag Earthquake in a thread in the Dream Section.
Clicking on that tag would then pull up all the other threads where someone added "Earthquake" to the thread tags.

Tags are used to help search for threads that discuss certain topics. Thread participants can add tags to the thread, and then anyone can search for threads with particular tags. It will take time for us all to get used to using the tags.

I ask because I hang out in the heavy duty debate forums and lately we've been getting members who've signed up simply to bait members and act obnoxious. I also don't have a list of online mods so I can't simply PM. Do we have this system up yet?

1. I'm not sure exactly when jobs are coming back, my best guess would be sometime next week.
2. The blessings system is partially up. We can't bank our blessings yet, but we can donate again. I think you'll see a "Donate" link in the information portion of other members' posts, up where their post count is listed.
3. No news on SS benefits except that they'll come back when the programmers can get it ironed out (along with all the other stuff they need to iron out). Info about Site Supporters was postedin in this announcemen thread (http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7232968) yesterday.
4. I'm not sure of the status of show all threads. A lot of people wanted that to go away permanently, so I'm not sure if it's a glitch or a feature, so to speak. Some of the other profile options will come back; it's just a matter of time to code and configure them.
5. I think the option to look at older reps is permanent, if it's not too much of a load on the server.

This is one of the things that the programmers will have to code; vbulletin doesn't come with that as an option. It's not a difficult thing to code, but there's a lot of code work ahead, and I don't know where on the list this one falls.

Well I've really tried to find the answer to this without asking the question but I just can't.
I know that reps were gone for a while but it seems other people have them back up but I don't and I can't figure out how to get them back.
Since others have theirs, is there something I have to do to get mine?
When did you give your last rep? They were reset for the 24-hour cycle. I could not rep again till about 6 ish this evening, which was 24 hours from the time I gave out my last rep yesterday.
Also, they are back but not our rep power, everyone you rep gets 40 points no matter what your rep power is. From what I understand they are working on this so we will have to be patient again. Hope this made sense.

The calculation is not correct. My reps are only worth 40 points now, they should be worth over 151000 points.

HI, not sure where and how to report this. My edit, quote, multiquote buttons are all missing. As is the avatar graphics when I am on Cf. Other graphics work fine. They were all there and working up until a couple of days ago. Others say their's are present and working fine. What should I do. Thanks! Pm me if possible as I will be out of town for a week starting Saturday, so obviously not a huge priority compared to all everyone is doing during this process. Thanks to all for everything!!! Thanks for fixing the reputation system.
Related to that -- can our current rep numbers please be added to the top of the page where our last login, private message count, and blessings are listed? That has always been the first thing I check when I log in, and it's not only hard to keep track of, but kind of annoying to have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see if I've gotten any new reps.

I am really excited about the real search function being brought back, the smoother running dolly system (with upgrades no less, and one small kb image instead of parts that loaded separately), the cleaner look etc.
I realize it won't make everyone happy, but this is really an improvement in my book! Good job Lee and the rest of the team.
My only question at the moment is whether we can get the avatar max size upped to 250x250, equal to the larger dolly backgrounds, so that those who are on the creative side of things can make their own images of that size?

I think that would be a good change. Some people have talked about wanting to do creative things *with* their dollies, as well, and this would allow them to use the parts of the Living Avatars collection they want to use, and then add whatever they like on their own, and then upload their image from their computers.
It's something the tech folks will have to change, though, with the buy-in from our top management. But, this idea definitely has my support.

Yes, that was part of what I was thinking....integrating dollies in ways that the software would normally not allow. You could do animation scenes with Gif's if the software allowed it. It could be really fun.

Just out of curiosity, on the old profiles, the information we had inputted were links that could find us others who had the same information on their profiles. For instance, when I clicked on name of the church I attend in my profile, it listed all the other members who had that same information in their profiles. That was fantastic information to have.
Would it be possible to have that same feature with the new site?
Thanks.

That link is not available yet, and I'm not sure when it will be reprogrammed. The systems are so different that creating those pages will be a "from scratch" effort, I think.
Once "View Forum Leaders" works, it will provide some, but not all of the information we had before.

I'm not too sure about that. I noticed it by just checking the time in the footer, it would randomly jump ahead so I then looked into it and there was a huge difference between the servers.
If we notice it again, it's a quick fix for the server technician.

I wanted to report an odd problem in the Word of Faith forum. There are two threads in there that are quite long and they say they have two extra pages that you can't access. Here are the links to them.
http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7212283&page=33
http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7161763&page=36
The second thread only has one extra page right now, but it had been two before. It doesn't matter if you click on the last page link or the number, it will always go back to the previous number page you were on.
I also have a question about how long it will be before the "GO" button is returned to the bottom of each thread page, so you don't have to go back up top to go back to the forum? :D Just wondering!
Thank you for your help.

Hi! Just wondering if your still around or not? Are you working on stuff? Do you read the report bugs forum? Could you give us a better idea of a list of priorities and how long things will take? Do you know when the bank will be up and running again? Are we going to get a button on the posts to bless people like we used to? how bout faith icons? Are the CF quizzes around somewhere or will they be? What about the full restoration of the SS priveledges? There is so much that still needs to be fixed. Are you the only one working on all this? We seemed to have lost alot of people on this site over the past 2 mos. I was only 498 users online this morning and was shocked. I have never seen under 1,000 users online before all this updating. Why isn't LeeD hiring more people to get this stuff done? he is losing so many people from the forum. Just some thoughts.

Are missdancerama and I the only ones who had problems getting on yesterday?

I haven't been around much due to the DNS problems. Let me catch up on things and I'll try to answer questions. I think the thread that RedStiletto has going may somewhat take the place of this one, since she knows the schedule of planned changes/additions.

I think this " due to the DNS problems. " explains a lot as to why we couldn't get on sometimes this weekend :)

Yes, it does. Some people still can't get in, from what I understand.

Know you are all working so hard but anything with the pets yet? cfpetrescuer9
The pets are high on the priority list. I don't have an estimate, though. Now that the DNS problems are getting better, hopefully some of the folks who are more in the know about the coding and timing will be able to check in and let us know.

I haven't heard anything specific about PDA view timing, but it's important to a lot of people. I hope it's high on the list.

No, a lot of people were affected, and some are still affected.

Many of the leadership were affected by the DNS problem. Also, I think RedStiletto's thread to some extent takes the place of this one. However, I still read it when I'm online and try to answer questions.

Chatbox will be coming back, but I haven't heard anything specific about when, besides "soon". Jobs will also be coming back (not sure how soon).

Well..... finally after 3 days of not being able to get on I am here. I think being a site supporter something should be given back when everything is up and running. We have not had our site supporter status since May 4th. So maybe a few added months to our paid subscriptions would help.:)
