Check out Nexialys' announcement (http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7232968)
on where things stand today and what's coming in the next few days!

Yes, I read that. (I'm leaving for 3-days o/o town for Education-week).

I wonder, upon my return, IF CF :P will continue staying recognizable. What do you think? ;)

No, the background doesn't suit you. It's too dark. The castle has dungeons and murder and evil lurking in every corner. It's not a lady's castle. It's for knights, armed and armoured.

Sometimes, we have to fight flying dragons that come to our castle. So please, for your own safety, go somewhere else!!! The dark background compliments my white outfit... ;) :D

Dungeons... murder... evil... dragons.... Pppssshhhhhh They don't bother me :D :P

Noooooo!

Not more blessings bugs, anything but that!

amen, sister!

They got it nipped.

Now it's only a question of what they'll do next :D

I'm SO glad I wasn't here earlier today, otherwise, I'd be on the floor begging to NOT have blessings/reps added to me... that other night was SO fun...wasn't it?? ;)

sk8Joyful

How weird  Earlier today, after getting repped, it showed: "power 3750"

Now, with the newest-explanation, it says: "Reps: 3737942 (power: 3746)" ^_^
~
on 2nd. thought, WHY have we got that REP-creature at all

is it for continually-encouraging...
(some christians ordinarily not so inclined), to *selflessly* Bless their fellow humanity?
What (other than just *fun*) can you think of? :P

For a while if you got reps you also got blessings = to 2X the Rep power of the repper.
So if I reped ya with a rep power of 150K you would of also received 300K in blessings.
This bug was fixed in short time though.

There's always tomorrow :ebil:

The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow
There'll be sun!

Just thinkin' about
Tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs,
And the sorrow
'Til there's none!

When I'm stuck a day
That's gray,
And lonely,
I just stick out my chin
And Grin,
And Say,
Oh!

The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
So ya gotta hang on
'Til tomorrow
Come what may
Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
I love ya Tomorrow!
You're always
A day

OK, April showers I understand. May flowers and all that.

But what possible good are May thunderstorms? What do they bring?

Hmm... Rep points and Rep power listed now. Cool.

Heh, no, nothing to do with autos. Find out who cut the fence at Woodstock, turning it into a free concert, and you'll find out what UAW/MF means.

The Brakemen attempt to act as a brake on runaway government (and governance) by supporting and encouraging Anarchy (first) and Pure Democracy (second). One point worth noting, though, is that should Anarchy actually become a realistic possibility, the Brakemen would quickly reverse direction, because Anarchy would be a nightmare... as such, I suppose we'd still be acting as a brake.

as for the video...I don't mind that Growltiger's been left out, but seeing it on B'way 5 times, it was funny and very elaborate. I got the chance to dance with Rum Tum Tugger and have a "cat" crawl up to me on stage (I had stage seat) during "Naming of the Cats" and I met Michael Gruber (Munkustrap on video) a few times. What's with the you can only give 40 reps at a time thing? What's the purpose of having rep power if you can't use it? Absolutely no time like the present. Also, why is it turning to a new page instead of opening to a new window when you hit the reps button??

Please please look into this...its kind of important to some of us. Thanks.

I thought Scotland was independent. I was wrong. LOL!

Haha, did you think Wales was independent too? This is the first time I've ever heard that anyone thought Scotland was independent. Scotland has been the same as England since King James ruled Britain. This is the same King James as the KJV (of AV1611VET's fame; hehe). I wonder if AV1611VET is aware that King James was a practising homosexual. I wonder if all proponents of KJV are aware of that. Hehe.

King James funded the research. He did not do the research himself. As for his sexual orientation, I have no idea. I do know that God will use sinful men to accomplish many things. We are all sinners afterall.

Even if that were true,(which I have no such knowledge of), it is apparent that King James
was interested in having a copy of the Bible that he could read and understand and he
did not order that the Scriptures against any particular sins that he was or was not
committing were removed, but received it as was written, so, other than a noteworthy
attempt to cause divisions, your point would be?

Personal relationships
Main article: Personal relationships of James I of England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_relationships_of_James_I_of_England)
Throughout his life James had close relationships with male courtiers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courtier), in particular Esmé Stewart, 6th Lord d'Aubigny (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esm%C3%A9_Stewart%2C_1st_Duke_of_Lennox) (later 1st Duke of Lennox); Robert Carr, 1st Earl of Somerset (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Carr%2C_1st_Earl_of_Somerset); and George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Villiers%2C_1st_Duke_of_Buckingham). There has been debate among historians about the nature of these relationships: "The evidence of his correspondence and contemporary accounts have led some historians to conclude that the king was homosexual or bisexual. In fact, the issue is murky." (Bucholz, 2004)[106] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_I_of_England#cite_note-105) In Basilikon Doron, James lists sodomy among crimes "ye are bound in conscience never to forgive". At age twenty-three, James and three hundred of his men performed a dramatic rescue of Anne of Denmark when she was stranded on the coast of Norway. They married and bore seven children, some sources say nine children, only three of whom survived. James also had a documented two year affair with Anne Murray, later Lady Glamis, to whom he wrote poetry.

I'd have to split half the thread out to make it completely on topic.

We're letting this thread drift a little here and there. There is a more focused thread with lots of links and Q&A here (http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7231670). It may not be a perfect solution, but the two threads meet the needs of a diverse population to some extent.

Anyone else wants to make me grateful? You know what to do with some of your blessings. Hehe. Just kidding.

Actually, there are some people who are disgruntled about many things in CF (you know how discontent people can be?) and they've gone over to another forum. They vow not to return to CF. I asked them to give me their blessings cos they weren't ever returning to CF anyway. But so far, they haven't given me any. Hehe. They keep complaining that the rules don't allow for blasphemy, etc but I keep telling them this is CHRISTIAN forums. I invite people who like to exercise their free speech to go to a mosque preferably in a Muslim country and declare that Muhammad, by having sex with a 9-year-old, was a paedophile.

But these people always seem to target Christians only I suppose because we are taught to turn the other cheek and not cut off the heads of those who blaspheme God.

I have met others that were like that. Kids today, I really think are smarter than ever. I chat with a group of 10-12 year olds who are writing fanatics. They love Shakespeare for goodness sake. I showed one of their poems to my English Professor and he thought I was making fun of him. He did not believe that the poem was from an 11 year old boy.

So, I believe he is really 13. If he is not, then, I guess he has made a great joke on all of us. Whatever...

I honestly think you are 13. I did wonder when I first met you. The reason I decided that you really are 13 is because of how you react to some things. You have an enormous amount of knowledge but at times you are very defensive. I can see you struggle against it as if you intellectually know you are doing it but it still comes across. Well, this thread (and it's original) was started and contributed to
before anybody had any clear idea of what was what. It's largely about reaction and "best guesses".

The Q&A thread was started and monitored by those who were actually making the changes, so
it gives concrete answers.

Oh, that sound like a winner! Thanks for the further explanation. :)

Okay, I will bite. Proof of what?

I need proof for my arguments with atheists in GA. Whenever I trounce them, they will say I am an immature child. You know how they're like when they're defeated in an argument. So this is proof that I'm quite mature. So mature that people think I'm a professor doing a social test on people in the forum. I love that.

^_^ That bad?

No, not bad at all. It is a wonderful group.

See what happened was...During the 7-7-07 change, some mod wanted to move GA to another forum so that they would have jurisdiction over it. It upset alot of people. That mod, or someone else who wanted GA moved, compared it to an inner city ghetto. So, some of us dressed our characters up like gangstas. It was hilarious and the name stuck.

GA is unique. It has a culture, a flavor, hard to explain, but those of us who have been there awhile understand what that means, I guess. Like, in Congregation or even here, people report other people over really stupid things, but in the ghetto, you are expected to be tough and not report every little thing.

I have not wandered around the 'ghetto' much, but I can agree with you. On most of the 'debate' threads I have posted on, atheists were very defensive and rude. I was actually very shocked at some of the topics I encounted a few nights ago. Not only were the comments being said very hostile, but they were pretty much simply making fun of Christians. I was extremely disappointed for the first time in this site.

Oh, I see. That's cool. Like I said, there have been a few others. I can think of two off the top of my head. One was 15 and a militant atheist. He pushed my buttons worse than anyone EVER has on here. The other was 16 and he was a prolific writer. He is banned from CF I think, but I still talk to him via e-mail. He sends me his stories to read.

No...^_^

I definitely need to change it. I appreciate your honesty.

It is SUPPOSED to be Jesus. See?

Revelation 1:14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. 16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

I am a high school teacher;
therefore I am familiar with many different types of 'teens.'
And let me assure you, most do not type or even write in pencil with proper grammar.

Given my previous post on this subject, it's hardly surprising that I am actually Biting, on this one -
but what you said, makes for a VERY-interesting Topic (somewhere else); you agree?

One of my sisters worked as a "High-school English" teacher, plus (substituting in classes she remains fairly clueless about). She has gone round-about (in neverending circles) ^_^ this subject of WHY increasingly many PUBLIC-schooled students, when they manage to get themselves graduated from that System at all - yet FAIL to "read" even their Diploma. Don't you find that just beyond TRAGIC!!!
~~

So, maybe I should Clarify: that the "delightful teens" I referred to earlier,
were, and are, each *Home-(or more aptly said) UN-schooled*. And
for the record, the best universities - snap these right up,
because these students were *empowered* to RETAIN their ability to learn... easily & quickly.

What has been your own professional experience with this , I wonder ;)

In defense of at least Canadian public schools, at least the ones my myriad neices, nephews and cousins attend, not too many graduate without receiving a good basic education. These children/teens excel at many things, writing, languages, maths, arts, music, media - almost all will attend university or other post high school education. And most of them would consider beamishboy to be another kid like themselves, if a little boastful.

Lisa, thanks for defending the outcasts in Discussion and Debate. Note they have divided our territories, dissolved D&D, moved GA, and hidden C&E inside another forum with this upgrade.

You bring up another good :) point:
Yes sadly, it's a well-known fact that many countries' *Public-educations* far surpass the USA :blush:;
which tells you that "INcreasing teacher's salaries" is obviously not the answer.

I wonder ;) how Canada is successfully different , from say any of the European countries, one of which I came from as a teenager. For example, in 7th. grade: we were fluent in a 2nd. language, writing formal essays, doing geometry, cellular experiments under the microscope, building furniture... complete with scroll-work, excelling also in music, as well as sports :)

And the "drug/crime-Rates"?? - what is that  (instead of the USA-m.o.
of dumbing-down, while drugging-UP the kids at the same time, via therapists, teachers, & m.d.'s)

In Educationally-successful  countries, as well as families, students are (like I said previously) *empowered* to learn... and - as is the case with UNschooling families I have had the pleasure of associating with - easily & quickly.

Sk8Joyful, I don't know. I'm pretty sure, though, that we do pay our teachers better than most US schools do. It's considered a very good profession to have here. Teachers are encouraged to continually educate themselves as well. We complain about all the professional days when they are workshopping or conferencing, but perhaps it really works. I know the schools my relatives attend are not in wealthy areas, but the kids are given great opportunities to learn - practicums with local employers, French immersion trips to Quebec, opportunities to take classes in other institutions, media access, etc. My neices are constantly busy with school activities, and they love it. My oldest neice is graduating with a 98.9 average for every year in high school (yes, I'm bragging!), and had stiff competition to retain her place at the top. She's been offered very significant scholarships by eight or nine universities, and so have many of her friends.

OTOH, I have relations in Florida who graduated ten years or so ago, and they seemed to regard school as a depressing and stressful experience. Something seems to be going wrong.

Before someone brings it up - our larger cities have plenty minority immigrants, but the schools seem to be managing that with only minor difficulties.

This is better discussed in the NCR Forum. I'm pretty sure you know where that one is ;).

like here for instance: "http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7198436&page=3 ";
and there it really doesn't matter, it's just a silly Word-game; (I usually prefer participating in Substantial topics).

But anyway on page 3, you can see that words didn't POST "alphabetically";
or in the ORDER that they were sent yesterday.
Is that another BUG?; or was that just some sort of fluke??

Copied this here both for its informational value, and for "entirely too much levity":

1. I'm not sure exactly when jobs are coming back, my best guess would be sometime next week.

2. The blessings system is partially up. We can't bank our blessings yet, but we can donate again. I think you'll see a "Donate" link in the information portion of other members' posts, up where their post count is listed.

3. No news on SS benefits except that they'll come back when the programmers can get it ironed out (along with all the other stuff they need to iron out). Info about Site Supporters was postedin in this announcemen thread (http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7232968) yesterday.

4. I'm not sure of the status of show all threads. A lot of people wanted that to go away permanently, so I'm not sure if it's a glitch or a feature, so to speak. Some of the other profile options will come back; it's just a matter of time to code and configure them.

5. I think the option to look at older reps is permanent, if it's not too much of a load on the server.

This is one of the things that the programmers will have to code; vbulletin doesn't come with that as an option. It's not a difficult thing to code, but there's a lot of code work ahead, and I don't know where on the list this one falls.

Guestbooks are replaced with the new Visitor Messages on our profiles.

The pets are coming back, just a matter of time. I don't think we'll have them back until next week at the earliest. I miss my Lenore, too!

I'm not sure what Olympic rings you are talking about, but I assume it's something either in the chibi folder or the background folder, since the CFCs didn't have one. Wow, you have talented sons. I've been working very hard for my ABRSM clarinet exam that's just round the corner. I can't imagine doing flute or oboe on top of the clarinet.

Do Americans do the ABRSM exam or is that only a British thing? I know it's done worldwide. Everyone I know has heard of or has taken the ABRSM exam. Is it as popular in America or do people actually go "What on earth is ABRSM?"

The ABRSM must be the single most established music examination in the whole world. I'm now in another country and every year, tens of thousands of candidates take the exams. And they're not even anywhere near England. I hear Canadians do it too. But then, from my experience, America seems not to want to do anything that's British. Could it be that the revolution against Britain in the 18th century still rankles?

I've never heard of ABRSM, it's not a California thing at least. Nor was it known in Florida back when I was a high school musician.

Music runs in the family. My FIL is a retired high school band director. All of his children play instruments, and now all of his grandchildren do, as well. My husband played tuba in a university band, and made his way as a professional bass guitar player for a few years. He still plays in bands, but these days it's for grins. My older son's rock band goes on a couple of tours this summer. They'll be playing in small venues mostly in Southern California. The band formed in January, so things are moving along pretty well for them.

Music is hereditary. I think it's in the genes.

Just as I thought - Americans don't do the ABRSM. It stands for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. It's very systematic and it has a very comprehensive syllabus. It's from Grades 1 to 8, after which one takes a Diploma. It's divided into Practical and Theory. For Practical, it goes according to the instrument played. It's got an awesome syllabus for every single instrument. I saw the syllabus for the harpsichord. The syllabus usually requires the candidate to cover a wide array of music from Baroque to modern. But for the harpsichord, it's all Baroque only, for obvious reasons.

Most people in the UK and the Commonwealth take these exams from childhood onwards. But most people drop out at Grade 5. To go above Grade 5, you have to pass at least Grade 5 in the Theory exams first. Anything above Grade 5 becomes increasingly tough. It's very difficult to get the Diploma. In the UK, a Diploma from the ABRSM is accredited as a university degree.

The ABRSM flies examiners from Britain all over the world to examine candidates for the exams. I know people in India, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong who are taking the exams.

I suppose the ABRSM is attractive because it's very structured and standardised. If someone says he's got a Grade 6 clarinet, we can immediately tell that he can play the second movement of most clarinet quintets including Mozart's Clarinet Quintet but not the other movements. At Grade 8, he should be able to play all the movements. The ABRSM syllabus also helps us to gauge the level of difficulty of many pieces of classical music.

Is there something similar in America? You're not the first who's told me that she's not heard of the ABRSM.

I'm afraid it's just not that organized in the US. Serious instrumental music instruction in the schools usually starts in 4th or 5th grade (ages 9-10). Prior to that, sometimes music is taught in school on instruments like xylophones and recorders, which young and short arms can handle easily. The emphasis in school is on ensemble skills. Many, if not most, students take private lessons to learn advanced skills and techniques for their instruments. My sons have taken private piano, guitar, saxophone and trombone lessons. They've both been studying saxophone and trombone respectively with private instructors for about 4 years each.

But, their earliest musical instruction was provided by their grandfather. He starts every grandkid off with their chosen instrument at age 9 or so (earlier for the piano folks!).

Beamish, how interesting!

The closest we have that I know of is the "Suzuki" method for strings. The books are graded, and the kids advance through the books with the help of private instruction. Both of my youngest sons have learned violin this way.

Btw--everytime I see your name those words go through my head, "Twas brillig, and the slithy toves/ Did gyre and gimble in the wabe/ All mimsy were the borogroves, and the momewraths outgrabe..."

It's the same for us. We go for private lessons. I'm very lucky because my teacher is the Principal Clarinettist in the Orchestra. But instructions and lessons are not the same as Grades. What I'm curious about is what exams do your sons take after they've gone for lessons. Is there a goal that the music instructor is targeting for?

The ABRSM exams are very good. They identify your areas of weakness. The practical examination is divided into different components. You play three pieces from different periods, one of which is a technical piece. Students prepare very hard for these three pieces. It's like a performance: you have to perform in front of the examiner. Unless you are graded for the piano, you will need a piano accompanist for the other instruments. Then, there is the aural part to test your hearing and your ability to sing, count beats, rhythm, etc. After that, the examiner will play a piece and you have to answer questions about that piece - genre, identify cadences, etc. The final part is the sight-reading. You are given a music sheet that you've never seen before and you have to play it for the examiner. It's very harrowing and I've seen young children leaving the exam studio in tears. But it's a good practice for the student.

One important lesson I learnt from the ABRSM exams is that if you make a mistake while playing a piece, just go on and continue to keep time. Never stop because you fail when you stop. It's a good training for actual performance on stage.

I've heard of the Suzuki method. But that is just a method for simplifying the teaching of an instrument. You are right - I've only heard of it in relation to the violin and the cello. But what about exams? Is there a standard exam for all Americans? I hear from a Candian that Canadians do the ABRSM exams too. Why not America?

Yes, so many words were coined in that poem and got accepted into the OED.

Tests...another can o' worms. To my knowledge there is little standardization in the test realm.

In high school, tests are usually divided into written (mostly theory) and performance. The students get some feedback on their performances, but it's not stringently graded.

For students in private music schools and at university, we have juried performances. Usually the jury is comprised of 3 music professors, and 2 or 3 pieces of music are performed. Music students do a great deal of preparation for the jury pieces.

In our area, there are a number of summer and after-school schools/camps/regional honor bands for musicians. To get into a top notch school, camp or honor band, the student goes through a rigorious audition process.

Hey raven, do you happen to know when we'll get forum customization back, like name changes? Or -if- we will get it back?

Someone was asking elsewhere how we can change our usernames now. I assume that, right now, we can't?

~ Lynn
I don't know exactly when, but the plan is to have customization back as part of the complete upgrade.

No, I'm not seeing this on any page!

Unless you are talking about the main forum page.

I though D was referring to each individual thread page.
