We are less than a week into this, the main tech guy experienced the death of a close family friend and all you can think of is complaining.
If that is what you think the Christian thing to do is, then I feel really sorry for you.
Of course a surefire way to fan the flames to to complain about the complaining! :)
No one here is personally attacking the 'tech guy', especially at this difficult time, however, I think we should have the grace to allow people to express their frustrations over a particular issue. Some people feel very strongly about this, we shouldn't invalidate their frustrations.

Everybody's a little stressed right now. The unknown is a worrisome thing, but we'll get through it--just like we always do. Let's not go for each others' throats just yet. There'll be plenty of time for that later.

I lost my dad to cancer and still worked because I could not afford to take unpaid leave. It is part of life to have people die, I am sorry his friend died but that doesn't mean the dozens of people on CF that are thrown off here when being ministered to should have to suffer too. I have had people PM me upset because they were helping others out and the place kept crashing on them. I cannot say the tech's suffering is negligible but what about the dozens of others here thrown out without any explanation? do they deserve that night after night? should we abandon them and accept it while praising those doing such things? Think about such things
where is the sympathy for others...... unChristlike? I think not.

I haven't read through the hundreds of pages and thousands of responses. But I wanted to say 3 main points -
- The new board style/design looks great! A thousand times more professional. As CF hopes to attract users of all ages this is a very relevant point. This includes the way user names were displayed and the million little icons a user could have above their posts. I loved the individual designs of the previous CF as much as anyone else, but all the buttons at the top, and text links, and mismatched stuff was not working for a site of our size
- As an IT person with an IT husband, thanks for all your hard work!
- I'm sure there will be bumps in the transition. There always are. I hope I can be patient as a user of the site while navigating them
:thumbsup:

I don't think anyone is "praising someone for throwing people off the site".
I do think we are acknowledging that a lot has been accomplished in a short period of time, that we have been told upfront that there is still a lot of work to do and that we have been asked to be patient. Maybe we should just ask to have the site shut down for the rest of the time it takes to complete the upgrade and additions if people can't understand the problems of posting on the site when all the bugs aren't worked out.

OHHHHH! If you have never been introduced to Dr. Who before, let me take this opportunity to introduce you to him/them.
Go to this site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who) and scroll down about half way to "meet" the doctors.
The blue police box (not phone booth) is the TARDIS (the Doctor's space ship). It stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. It is bigger inside than out and travels through time and space.
It is the longest running television show. 27 years in the original series and 4 years since it has been restarted.

they quit showing it on PBS here (public broadcasting system) long ago. I don't have the sci fi channel so I cannot see it. I used to love the eerie theme song and the daleks and etc. Was a fun series to watch even though the effects were kinda cheesy, like star trek (original) the stories made up for it more than enough I think.

Yeah, the old shows were pretty cheesy in places, but the new ones only have a tad of cheesiness in them. But it is required.
They are on the internet (youtube) BTW, for everyone who doesn't get the scifi channel.

MnPhysicist's Anouncement from April 6th this year...
"
First, we had a major database crash, compounded with some issues with the datacenter and server. That was rebuilt, albeit the time stamps are likely still messed up, and likely will be that way until CF is upgraded.
Going forward, CF has been replicated on a second system, including a copy of the database. That is being used as test bed, as well as a dry run for the upgrade. Rather than the original plan of migrate and tweak, Lee made a call to do it carefully, rather than rush and chase bugs for months
In addition, we did discuss bringing the site offline, but the call was made to keep it up, even if its hard to use.
Lee is doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Beyond the 3 server guys we had in the past, Lee has 2 more guys on it. He also has added more tech staff to assist with the upgrade. Oh ok, that answers my question about developing on a separate server, but it still seems strange that such bugs are making it to the live server. I assume they decided to move release forward due to the db crash, but after the db crash and before the upgrade, the board was usable... for what, a week or two?
With like 5 devs, even if one is missing for personal issues, it shouldn't cause that much trouble, what's the excuse for the other 4? And someone mentioned that they don't get paid so that is an excuse(?), but it shouldn't matter if they get paid or not, unless that is meant that they are so unexperienced that they couldn't earn a wage in this field even if they wanted to, but I thought LeeD was a professional website developer so inexperience never crossed my mind.
Last year there were 2-3 times as many online here with everything working That's not much to do with the stability of the forum site, but had to do with the stability of the purpose of the site. Many Christians were scared away when it was decided to drop CF in favor for a regular community site, and many never returned even after being regular members for years. So instead of peaking 2500 regularly, it's like 1200, so about half the traffic now. Some of the regular boards here are still dead, where once they had lots of Christians posting all the time in their community groups, even though the site has inched it's way back to being as it once was in purpose, a little. These changes happened over a long time though, it was just the straw that broke the camels back, and a partial return to how it once was long ago hasn't helped all that much as far as participation goes. So no, not really due to system stability issues, we have endured that for years.

they already have threads where they took the questions most asked and linked to them. the problem that happened with this thread was even at the start people repeatedly asked the same dozen questions and they were answered by many mods/techs in many ways. If someone comes in to ask a question usually someone answers is pretty quick or gives a link to the answer even if you removed the non sequitor posts you would still have to sift through 1500 posts to find things...

yup.. not to mention sometimes folks will hop on and talk more about issues when they see conversation instead of just questions with seemingly nobody there. I hate it when I call for help and get menus of answers I have to spend 5 minutes wading through instead of a real person because a lot of the time my question(s) don't match any answers they have.

Welcome to CF2! :wave:
Members and Staff,
Welcome to CF2.
There are a lot of changes, and it would be unlikely that everything could be covered in a single announcement.
The first thing you'll probably notice is we have a new style. The second being there is a new forum structure. This was done in an attempt at making things a bit easier to navigate. There are a lot of forums on CF, and it can be somewhat intimidating for new members.
Some of the forums are marked as "For Christians." These are forums specifically for Christian fellowship and discussion. Theology (with the exception of Unorthodox Theology), Edification, Ministry, and Teens are currently marked as "For Christians."
The Debate category has also been rearranged. Politics, Ethics/Morality, and Philosophy have been moved to the Society category; Creation vs. Evolution has been moved as a sub-forum of Physical & Life Sciences. General Apologetics and Non-Christian Religion have been moved to the Outreach category.
There will be a new moderation protocol, released shortly. Reports will be closed, but new features installed that allow members to keep track of the status of their reports, as well as mod actions taken against their posts and threads.
There are several new features, some of which are incompatible with old features. The Character items and Pets can be transferred over to the new engine, but everyone is going to have to reacquire their items. For the first month, all pets and characters will be free, so as to allow everyone to rebuild their items.
Chrisbot, unfortunately, was not compatible with the upgrade.
There are a lot of new features, too numerous to go into much depth about them all here. These are a few:
An updated chatbox engine;
"Thank You" notes;
New smilies (in addition to current smileys);
Updated home page profiles;
Extended reputation display;
Photo albums;
Image icons and reorganization of UserCP;
New ranking system (members with the most posts, the most activity, etc);
New pets and character items (in addition to current pets and character items);
Upgraded blogs;
An information portal and site-map (to help with site navigation);
Ability to "tag" a thread, and use thread prefixes;
Drafts (so that you may save a draft post and later return to it).
Some of these are installed already; some will be installed over the next few days. Please report any bugs (in the Report Bugs forum) you come across so the techs have a chance to fix them
If you have questions or need help with something specific, you can contact these staff members and they can help:
Ravenscape and LibertyChic, for questions about the Armory and Character items.
CelticGrace, for questions about the Pets and the new P3TZ engine.
Angeldove97, for questions about the new blogs, photo album, gallery, etc.

There is an Announcement link at the top of everyone's page, at the top of every forum, telling people to be sure to read the Welcome to CF2 thread for important information. It is completely natural for people returning to CF to, I dunno, click that link to find important information. That first thread, which was closed at 2,000 posts, links to this thread.
It seems really inconsiderate to keep on with the off-topic posts as long as that announcement is posted. Either the announcement should link to the Q&A thread, or the moderators should keep this thread on topic.

Snap a shot of your avitar without a background and then paste it over a background of your choosing and correct size and upload it as a custom one. Might take a bit of work with PSP or another good tool but should work.

I'm going to speak up for one more thing regarding the off topic posts, and then just unsubscribe from the thread.
It would probably be a much better idea if the announcement sent people to the Q&A thread, instead.

customizing your fonts in posts, short term, like when we finish testing the database and all our processes are safe.. each addon we connect to the site is now tested to save us from bugs.

Yeah, sometimes a thread turns into somthing else. This one has turned into a discussion about the changes, not so much about getting answers. It will likely become something of an infinite fellowhsip thread. To expect otherwise is unrealistic.

1. I'm not sure about the arrow. But did you know that the "Home" key on your keyboard will return you to the top of the page no matter where on the page you've reached?
2. I think the image bugs have been fixed, so I would try loading the image again.

The bank is partially fixed. We can bless people again, but we can't deposit our on-hand blessings into the bank yet. I'm not sure how close rep is to being fixed. It sounds like a two-part process. Some of the old functionality involves configuration of the base system, and some of the old functionality involves modifying the code. The configuration will probably happen before the code-work does. No estimated time of arrival on this, as far as I know.

As I posted above, the bank functionality is still in progress. I don't know what the final configuration of the system will be. But, I don't see why the system would be configured to stop repetitive transactions as the final solution. I'll try to find an answer on this. You're the first who has mentioned that banking transactions don't permit re-blessing people repetitively.

We don't have an ETA on that yet. However, Nexia has stated rep will be restored to the way it worked before. (http://christianforums.com/showpost.php?p=46910280&postcount=90)
It's just a question of time and priorities. We have some issues that affect some people's ability to use the forum at all normally, and generally those kind of problems will be a higher priority than reconfiguring the features and fun stuff.

Several people have given me piles of blessings over the years with the understanding I'd spread 'em around when they're needed, and use them for special games. 1) How do you report a post? I know earlier there was a button to click to report it, but I can't find it anymore. (Don't want to report anyone, just something that I noticed.) Was there a bug with it or something?
2) Is there any word yet on when the pets will be back? Doesn't really matter to me how long it takes. Just wondering if there's any idea yet. I've looked around in other threads about the update, but wasn't able to find anything.
Thank you! Also, thank you for the new skins! The original wasn't giving me a headache or anything, I just prefer darker colors. THANK YOU!
Appreciate all the hard work that is going into this upgrade. It looks great!

Not a bug, but a huge amount of configuration/coding to make reports work correctly behind the scenes - notify the right mods, wind up in the right forum, etc. Reports are temporarily turned off while all that gets worked out. In the meanwhile if you see a bad post, PM a mod listed at the bottom of the forum where the post was made. The mods are out there in the forums, reading threads instead of spending the huge amounts of time that the report forums take. They're catching a lot, but it's a huge task and if you see something bad, no harm in a heads-up.

that's not how reality works. It's taking time to get every bell and whistle configured, working right, and the whole shebang working reliably.

Is a tad confusing isnt itVery...now folks, how do we know if we've given reps or not? I cannot see the actual rep numbers of the person I've given to, just how many they can give, and sometimes that doesn't budge. Also, there is no more menu that you can pop up on your user cp page that tells you which reps you've given to whom and what you commented either. No, the background doesn't suit you. It's too dark. The castle has dungeons and murder and evil lurking in every corner. It's not a lady's castle. It's for knights, armed and armoured.
Sometimes, we have to fight flying dragons that come to our castle. So please, for your own safety, go somewhere else!!!
