I was studying Hebrews 4-7 when I started to look at the statement said in David.

Hebrews 4:7 Again He designates a certain day, saying in David, "Today,'' after such a long time, as it has been said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.''

So I went back to see what was said in David and this is what I found.

Psalms 95:1-11 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of the earth; The heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; And His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: "Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, And as in the day of trial in the wilderness, When your fathers tested Me; They proved Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, And said, `It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways.' So I swore in My wrath, `They shall not enter My rest.' ''

I see creation here, I see the seventh day, I see it as a time we come before the LORD to worship and bow down, to shout joyfuly for He is our Maker. Sounds like the blessed and holy seventh day to me. Sounds like the day that acknowledges the one true God as creator.

What are your thoughts?

Hebrews 4 and Psa 95 are sister chapters.

I have a wonderful cross-reference Bbile (it's not an SDA study Bible in case you're wondering) and it is awesome.

But the "To day" reference definitely comes from Psalms, and absolutely that's about creation and about them disobeying in the Sabbath in the wilderness.

I'm leaving for my four day live in work at the group home so I won't be able to get on line for a while. We don't have internet in the home due to the many problems it was causing.

Many blessing in your studies and talk to you later,
Brother John

I know there are many who would say that Hebrews 4 is not about Sabbath observance. Even the SDA commentary says it's not a good chapter to show appropriate Sabbath observance. However, a closer study shows it is indeed about Sabbath rest as well as the rest of God from works for salvation. Dualistic applications of these concepts and truths abound in this set of texts. Thankyou for bringing this to us for a blessing.

I agree Jim. Hebrews 4 was a very compelling chapter for me personally when I was reading the Bible.

If you break it down, and cross-reference it IS talking about the seventh day Sabbath.

The fact that people try to make it say that "To day" (as in every day) is Sabbath....what a stretch that is!!

I always ask them HOW we "labor to enter into that rest" if it's talking about heaven, and I never get an answer.

Rest AS God rested...obvious.

REMAINS therefore a sabbath rest to the people of God....obvious.

I don't think it could get much clearer than it already is, but people somehow seem to think it's a proof text for NOT observing Sabbath.

It really is incredible.

Hebrews 3:11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

Straight from Psa 95!

Psa 95:11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

Which is straight from Nehemiah!

Nehemiah 13:8 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

What rest did the children of Jacob not enter into?

Ezekiel 20:12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.

13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

Psalms 95 talks about the disobedience in the wilderness.

Hebrews 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

BTW, as the mother and wife in this household, I can tell you exactly what "labor to enter into that rest" means to ME.

TODAY...preparation day. Laundry, vacuuming, preparing meals in advance for tomorrow, etc etc etc etc.

ADD-ON: I decided to look at my cross-reference Bible in Psa 95...and it links to Hebrews 4 AND...Numbers 14.

Numbers 14 is the provocation spoken of in Psa 95.

Connect the dots again:

Hebrews 4:7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

...

Psa 95:7 For he [is] our God; and we [are] the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,

Psa 95:8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (almost verbatim to the verse found in Hebrews 3:8....Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness; )

...

Numbers 14 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?

If you read Numbers 13, you'll see it was THE DAY they were supposed to reach the Promised Land!

You gotta love scripture! :)
