United Nations peacekeepers charged with preventing a Hizballah military buildup in southern Lebanon following the 2006 Second Lebanon War have failed miserably, according to the details of a secret report revealed on Monday.
According to the UN report, which leaked to the media by unnamed government sources in Jerusalem, late last month a UN patrol pulled over a truck in southern Lebanon after learning that it was transporting arms for Hizballah.
As they prepared to inspect the truck, however, the UN personnel were confronted by Hizballah men threatening them at gunpoint. The UN troops promptly returned to their vehicle and drove back to their base, abandoning the inspection and, apparently, the remainder of their patrol.
In its resolution ending the Second Lebanon War, the UN guaranteed that it would not allow Hizballah to rebuild its military strength in the south of Lebanon, and inserted an addition 8,000-10,000 troops into ensure the terror group could no longer threaten the Jewish state.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert later held up the increased UN force and its promises as a major achievement of the war, ignoring statements by his critics that the reinforced peacekeepers would not be any more effective at preventing Hizballah aggression than the force that was already on the ground when the war erupted.

If the troops are being controlled as they were in '82-'84 .... I am not so suprised.

When my dad was in the area, they were given guns WITHOUT bullets.. Basically "Go patrol the area, oh and by the way... you haven't any bullets on you -- nor will we be giving you any. Remember: Safety in numbers guys and gals!!!" and they'd be shot at daily with assault rifles and have grenades launched in their directions.

The UN peacekeeping troops like that -- are a big joke really. :(

I like the Israel definition of the UN: Unneeded Nobodies

Wouldn't the word 'peacekeeping' denote that peace was reigning already?
